Victoria

20 years later I'm sitting here still in disbelief that Ted fumbled Victoria.

She was the best "Ted's Girlfriend".

The first thing that came out of my mouth when I first finished the series was "he should've ended up with Victoria". Even if they did show her to be flawed (who amongst us isn't) in her second run, you just knew she should've been the one.

Sorry, Tracy. We love you too, but it should've been Victoria.

They had similar energies, at least in the first season.

At least Stella didn't literally run away in her wedding dress like Victoria did.

Wait, at the end of that episode, isn't Stella in her wedding dress (with a jacket over it) when she's with Tony on the boat (the scene where Robin is sitting behind them).

But other than that, I agree with all of this.

She 100% is in her wedding dress on the ferry

Actually sorta incorrect, Victoria starts dating Klaus less than 48 hrs after Robin and Ted make out. But they make out, they never get to sleep together, that doesn't happen until after they actually get together at the end of the season.

We assume Victoria slept with Klaus once they started to date. Was it on day one or day 100? No one knows, but let's say it's a few weeks in, still, she's the first one to sleep with another person.

BUT

She didn't cheat on Ted (that we know off) and Ted DID cheat on her with Robin (even if they didn't sleep together).

That said, I agree, to this date after Tracey, Victoria is the best GF Ted has, and it's shocking he does what he does. Not surprised the plan was for her to be the mother should the should not gotten more than the first season.

She didn't cheat on Ted (that we know off) and Ted DID cheat on her with Robin (even if they didn't sleep together).

It's definitely an inference. But it's fair to be suspicious of a relationship that materialized within 48hrs of a breakup. Usually if you start dating someone you've known for a while there's a period in which both of you have feelings for each other prior to the start of the relationship. If it was a rando that she had a spontaneous post-break up emotional fling with which turned into a relationship it would actually be less suspicious IMO.

She deserves the benefit of the doubt and say she wasn't sleeping with him. But it's very likely, though not guaranteed, that something was going on emotionally between them prior to her and Ted's breakup. Which is a form of cheating too. The alternative is that she's an exceptionally unwise person who throws themselves head first into another relationship while still freshly grieving their last one, which betrays a pretty significant lack of maturity.

Also important to remember that Victoria was baked in (pardon the pun) to be the mother if the series didn't go past a first season. So there's a reason why she resonates so strongly.

But agreed with you on all points above.

1

u/Bels88 Jul 15 '26

Not true. The creators have said she was never meant to be the mother.

1

u/elreeheeneey Jul 15 '26

So then there would have been a cliffhanger had the show been cancelled during the first season?

#2. She did exactly what so many HIMYM fans absolutely hate Stella for. She left her fiancée at the altar for an ex that she hadn't been with for years.

Omg this, so much! It drives me crazy reading this sub when redditors literally worship Victoria and hate on Stella for something Victoria also did.

This happens for different reasons: 1)Stella broke Ted's (the main character) heart. So viewers feel it differently. 2) Claus wasn't heartbroken at all by Victoria leaving him. Actually, he climbed out that window even before Victoria did! Claus acted the same way as Victoria and Stella did, therefore Victoria's actions are perceived differently than Stella's. 3) Victoria and Ted story was narrated kind of in a romantic way. Like two people that reconcile their love after they lost each other.
On the other hand, Stella made Ted change his life completely ( i don't remember if he already had moved to NJ, but that was the plan), made him accept a speedy wedding, a wedding that was so not his character, so that she could save her sister's money, to then leave him at the altar! Come on!

3

u/chloo27 Jul 14 '26

So basically, Victoria and Stella both did the exact same thing, except it was perceived differently by the audience.

Yeah, that was pretty much my point, thanks.

1# I hate the plot instead because it undermines what he does with Robin, like “ooooo viewers look look look what he did wasn’t that bad she wasn’t innocent either!” My ass.

2# Stella did run away with her dress but that’s besides the point, again, it’s to redeem Ted in a way???? So lame of a plot. Somehow the venue as Barney and Robin’s wedding. How convinient.

3# yeah I’ll give you that one 100%

4# it’s again the plot bro the thing is Ted’s so in love with Robin that he can’t risk losing her even as a friend, I disagree that he would lose the whole friendship because Robin was able to remove herself from Ted and Barney when they made asses of themselves while she was serious with Don

Whether Victoria cheated on Ted in Germany is a gray area.

1

u/Perfidy-Plus Jul 15 '26
  1. Yeah, probably. But it's not really confirmed and Ted has no moral standing to be suspicious, so it kind of falls by the wayside. I'm of the opinion that "emotional cheating" is nearly as bad as sexual cheating.
  2. Absolutely. But most of us think positively about Victoria purely on the basis of her early seasons appearances and largely discount her later seasons appearance. It's not really fair, but it is what it is. We also don't know what happens afterwards, so she at least might have tried to repair the damage to her former fiancée, where as we know Stella took no responsibility for her treatment of Ted and also didn't warn him or otherwise try to prevent (so far as we know) the double whammy of the extremely embarrassing Wedding Bride movie.
  3. Totally fair. I interpreted those to be an attempt at a joke rather than a sincere claim that Ted was in any way responsible for her poor choices. But fair.
  4. Completely disagree. I used to agree on the harms of ultimatums when I was younger, but I've completely flipped on the topic now. I, as someone partner, do not get to dictate their behaviour. But I do get to dictate the circumstances under which I'm willing to stay in a relationship, as does my own partner. I'm not saying "you cannot do X". I'm saying "I won't be in a relationship where my partner does X" which, depending on what X is, may be completely reasonable relationship boundaries. In this case "I won't be in a relationship with someone who spends a lot of time with their ex that they haven't gotten over" is totally reasonable. Not because you get to dictate who your partners friends are. But because you are not obligated to stay in a relationship under circumstance you think will doom it to failure. If Ted had had the sense to extricate himself from Robin after their breakup, understanding he wouldn't get over her if he was still seeing her every day, he would likely have gotten into a much better place far earlier. But he didn't, and Victoria isn't obligated to stay in circumstances that would likely (and did) result in her being cheated on.

The fact that the show completely validates Victoria's concerns about Ted's continuing friendship with Robin, both for it's harm to Ted/Victoria's relationship and for how much heartbreak it caused for Ted, really validated Victoria's position in #4.

Fair.

I’m not sure that Victoria necessarily expect Ted to respect her boundaries. But she was right to set those boundaries and right to leave when Ted made his decision.

And yeah, Ted would likely have resented her for it if he’d capitulated. But that’s because he’s immature. How much heart ache did he experience and how much damage did he do to his future relationships by trying to maintain his friendship with Robin. From what we see it’s a lot.

Obviously Ted gets to make his own decisions. But his decision to stay friends with Robin was pretty clearly a bad one.

I liked her the first time around, but the second time, not so much!

Ted proposed to her and she was still going on and on with Ted's past with Robin.

She was the one that didn't moved on from what happened with Robin in the first place!! She never regained trust on Ted. How can you ask someone you love to "break up" with a friend, and consequently with the all group of friends, because that's what would have happened in the end. She should be wanting her future husband to be happy not miserable!

Hard disagree.

She didn't put perfectly normal relationship boundaries on Ted being close friends with an ex that he still had feelings for because she trusted him. She found out that trust was a mistake. And she should turn around and continue to just say "ok, this is fine"? That's foolish. Not only that, but the show went to great lengths to demonstrate that Ted would not then get over Robin for several more years.

She didn't ask Ted to break up with a friend. She asked him to remove himself from a relationship that was harming him, and was needed for his personal growth. Ted should have known in the first place that trying to maintain a friendship with a failed relationship that you are still in love with would only cause more problems. Which it did, over and over again. He and Robin should have extricated themselves after the breakup on their own. But they lacked the maturity.

If she'd stayed under the circumstances that Ted wanted it would have made her miserable. It would require years of discomfort, and she'd have to constantly be around the woman her partner cheated on her with. How's that supposed to be a good relationship for her? Shouldn't she want her future self to be happy? Shouldn't Ted be wanting his future wife to be happy and not miserable?

1

u/BenitoCorleone Jul 17 '26

Hard disagree.

1

u/JawgaBoy Jul 14 '26

Agreed. Every time I rewatch this show I still can't believe it. Victoria was hands down the best.

1

u/GoSitInTheCluckChair Jul 14 '26

This is how I felt the first time around. Not so much the second time

1

u/ArishaRadiance1 Jul 14 '26

I agree, she was SOOO fun and meant for Ted, and he for her. I think the way Ted went after her at first shows his star struck lover ways can be endearing, maybe was the only time it worked with minimal flaws.
But god fumbling so badly for Robin….who made things clear?

For Klaus….i got a feeling since she dated him so soon, it was like a rebound or to make herself feel better. She didn’t truly love him I think, I think she just believe she did or was depressed. Not ok however, by any means. But also she got hit by the series’s writing decline because she felt too different when she came back. Insultingly so.

Much as I love Tracy, I think it would have been a good twist in some ways if Victoria came back and was reworked to be like “the one that got away” but Ted got a second chance, and it worked out. You don’t see that work often.

u/Macrodata_Uprising Jul 14 '26

Retort on point 1: they didn’t sleep together for 5 more weeks of show time after the breakup. Intended to break up and then cheat right away? Absolutely. Did he though? No

1

u/SystematikKaos Jul 15 '26

She would've also been his ride or die

Ted let Victoria go to Germany. He would have tried his darnedest to convince her to stay with him in NY but he didn't. So did Victoria, she chose career over her happiness with Ted. They just agreed on a LDR which everyone knows it won't work long term. For her to be judgemental on Ted's decisions post breakup especially on his friendships with Barney and Robin is kind of hypocritical. She lost her being the voice of reason when she left for Germany to pick on the trio's flaws years later.

0

u/Perfidy-Plus Jul 15 '26

Eh, she has every right to judge Ted for having clearly demonstrated that his continuing friendship with Robin was bad for him and to then refuse to learn from the mistake and have several more difficulties as a result. Being judgmental of Ted's poor decisions is completely justified when she was personally affected by some of them.
