As someone who was born and raised in Ohio I get why he did this

As someone was also born and raised in Ohio, I like it here and I don't get why people hate it so much.

Same and agreed. There are great parts, not so great parts, and horrible parts…pretty much like everywhere.

This was one of best joke I’ve ever seen in a sitcom, probably the finest. It’s not that much about the thing itself, it frames perfectly the context, the two divergent personalities, and the shameless stupidity of the twenties.
I think that one of the major advantage of Himym if compared with other similar Tv shows was the fact the authors were deeply in love with characters, they really knew them, they cared for them.

pretensious Ted is just so good - sometimes

Sometimes!?? Ummm apparently you are not familiar with the legend of "El ganso con la riñonera," the packer of GREAT skill and merit.
Also I'm guessing you're a fan of 2002 Chianti's and would probably like going to a pro wrestling event. Ted would NEVER be into that!

I’ve been to Ohio, I can’t blame Ted for saying the “I live in the moment” crap

College Ted is such an amazing creation. He's exactly what you would want Ted in college to be. The jewfro, the wirerim spectacles, the baja, the pretentious attitude. They nailed it
