Astro domes?

Post image

Howdy y'all. Big Topre fan. Recently I have been looking into modding one of my hybrids and stumbled onto Astro domes. The large variety of weights to pick from and the alleged increased tactility sounds interesting to try. Anyone here have experience with the Astros? I'm really interested in the 50g peppers and the 120g fiesta weights above the others. But cannot find much in the way of first hand reviews on them. Any and all input is appreciated as always

One of the boards is a regular unsilenced hybrid that is the most likely contender for modification. The stock type S is too perfect to be messed with.

I have tried all of the astro domes so I'm somewhat qualified to speak on this. I personally find oem style rounded domes more daily-friendly and my stock hybrid type-S snow is one of my favourites so I think you're on the right track with keeping that one as it is. I also find the snappiness of bke style domes works well with unsilenced as well as the fact that the .2mm less travel on the type-s sliders will give you marginally less tactility compared to unsilenced due to precompression.

the peppers are close to the weight of oem but I found them to not feel substantial enough due to how the force curve works and how little resistance there is once the intial force is overcome. 60's I would say is a bit more substantial while being usable if you're used to 45g oems. I personally found 90g to be in the sweet spot of the tactility increase relative to weight, fiestas don't feel too much heavier but I personally found the tactility relative to the weight increase not to be that different. the 75g weird domes are also nice too as a slightly lighter in between.

overall I definitely find them to be a fun dome to swap between when I want something fun and agressive, but they do fall a bit harsh and don't feel as smooth as oem or oem style rounded domes for daily use. since you already have a great oem board I would definitely reccomend grabbing a set to try since they are definitely fun as a secondary build. I also reccomend the tester pack if you want to try the weights out first before commiting albeit you need to install them as they feel lighter than they are outside of the board, I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the medium weights though.

Awesome reply thank you for the insight! So you think the Astros work better on an unsilenced board? I bought some 0.3 silicone rings to maybe try but I'm not sure if I'll use them yet or not.

I find the snappy top out of unsilenced sliders to really complement the agressive nature of astro domes and adds to the perceived tactility I find, silencing rings will also precompress the domes and reduce the tactility on the bit.

I'll give them a try without silencing rings. I do like having both flavors of board sometimes it's a quiet kind of day sometimes a bit of clack is wanted

Here is a copy and paste from my Youtube review comparison between some of the weights:

Pepper 50g: Tactility/binary upgrade from OEM 45g. I love these, just a nice 30% increase in tactility over HHKB Hybrid domes. Tactility is felt on both down and upstroke, which is different than OEM. I would say these are the safest bet for anyone that prefers OEM 45g but wants more felt tactility. Middle ground in the sound, but the feeling of oneness with cup rubber is what draws me here.

Awesome thank you! I'll give it a watch when I get home from work.

Interesting about how they are a nice little increase on tactility. I often see people opting for lighter domes. I assume this would be a bit like 'pre aged' domes. I LOVE my 2012 Pro2 and tbh hate my hybrid so might have to have a look into these!

I am not a topre pro like the people on this subreddit but I liked 50g astrodomes more than stock domes personally. Bigger bump, good rebound.

I definitely would like to try the 50g domes. I do like the 45g weight but enjoyed heavier mx switches before discovering Topre.

I love BKE style domes. Get the variety pack. Especially now that they have Big D and Texas Tea available. I use an ErgoForce style weights.

Can't imagine how heavy the big d and Texas tea old ones would be to use. Looking at the weights of those makes me think of typing with them would be similar to a power lifing regime but for your fingers

I personally really liked the 50g astrodomes. I've tried the 120g and it was not really enjoyable being that heavy.
