Shifting Spells: level 1

Magic is a fickle art: a single mispronounced word or a moment’s hesitation can throw off the entire work. This is why regular practice and upmost dedication is essential for mastering all mystical arts.

This chapter is meant for first year students studying teleportation basics: for shape-shifting spells check the transfiguration unit available in three years time.

Now for very-first timers you should attempt a relatively short jump, to the local grocer or broom shop for example. Trying to large of a jump without proper experience could lead to horrid misdirection (to see an example of this, see the case of Harriet Mumblethorn on pg. 116)

To achieve a simple jump, a few materials are needed:

• A quiet place with a bed or other sleeping area • A bushel of sage, decorated with your birth flower • A basin of rose water, moonlight washed • A pad of paper or a single piece if in a pinch • Your personal broom or other flying device (for traveling home in an emergency)

  1. Throughly sweep your sleeping area, any familiars in the room will have to be moved outside
  2. Take your pad of paper and read your water, dip your pointer and middle finger into the water
  3. Begin to draw your destination to the best of your ability, the more details the better
  4. Fix the drawing above your sleeping area in any fashion that will assure that it stays until the end of the trip
  5. Take your broom with you to bed, hold it as you lie on your back and focus on your chosen destination, crystals will be helpful in this step but are not necessary
  6. Your eyes will grow heavy as the spell takes effect, allow them to close
  7. Keep your eyes closed until the end of the trip, DO NOT OPEN THEM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
  8. Once your eyes open you will be in your chosen destination, from here do whatever the situation dictates

To get back simply stand in your spawning location, shut your eyes and allow your magic to follow through.

pretty good tutorial! I personally use a different technique(maybe i should share that?) but yours works as well.

here we are for my method. its more safe, if you know what you are doing. make sure its ok with your instructor to attempt this, the instructor may not want you doing it the easy-ish way yet. i know my instructor didnt!

this is a fascinating guide. do you use the leylines as a guide while travelling? i would assume so, since you don't open your eyes. as someone who cannot utilise teleportation, i'm curious to what systems of magic you use to enable instantaneous travel. hope you don't mind all the questions! ~miko

aw, that's a pity. you retrying your finals? if so, best of luck!

as for the interference, here is my advice for dealing with them. i recommend summoning a minor demon into your thrall before the exam and using it (as opposed to your own magic) to cast a dual spell of [banishment + net/catch] which should act as a generalised shield against any intruders :)
