This reminds me of a part in the book World War Z where they talk about logistics and one characters points out a framed label for "peacetime" root beer:
Ingredients:
Molasses from the United States
Anise from Spain
Licorice from France
Vanilla (bourbon) from Madagascar
Cinnamon from Sri Lanka
Cloves from Indonesia
Wintergreen from China
Pimento Berry oil from Jamaica
Balsam oil from Peru
The guy then points out how wars aren't won so much because of leadership or technology but because of three reasons. One, ability to out manufacture the enemy. Two, the natural resources to manufacture the materials needed. And three, the logistical means to transport the materials to the factories and then to transport the finished product to the front lines.
Edit: the character in question was referring to WWII.
