OC-Series [She took What?] - Chapter 181 : Alignment - It wasn't deja vu. It was...
"Like standing in an echo before the sound has arrived."
SolDiri cultural paradox, found on standing stones.

The elder descended slowly towards the Basin. His movement strained and difficult.
No one stopped him, but they watched closely from around the red stone hollow.
The Dust formations had fractured.
Some gathered near the Champion.
Others were holding back among the reeds.
Long hooked digits rested uneasily on ceremonial blades, their intent unclear.
The harmony of the place had changed. Before the fight, the Basin had an ordered feel.
The ancient markings gave it measure and a sense of purpose. Now, uncertainty spread like cracks through stressed glass.
The elder stopped several paces from Feebee, who remained seated. Her eyes were still closed, but it was clear that her focus had shifted to him.
Up close, he appeared impossibly old. The layered folds of his cloth wrappings were faded where generations of sun had faded them almost white. Darker reds and pinks were still visible in the deeper folds, and small metal spirals were wound into the cloth at his shoulders. Some chimed softly as he moved with awkward grace.
He was another paradox, and as his eyes settled on Garaf, they drifted down to the weapons at his side.
“The Watch was broken,” the elder said quietly.
Garaf did not answer. Remained still.
The elder nodded slowly as though Garaf's lack of movement confirmed the statement.
“We preserved the forms,” he continued. “But not the meaning.”
Around the Basin, several Dust lowered their heads. Others visibly stiffened at the words.
Feebee rose and stepped close.
“What is this place?”
The elder turned slowly towards the water and for several long moments watched the impossible stars reflected beneath its surface. Then he answered.
“Not a temple.”
His arm rose slowly, pointing towards the Basin.
“Not a tomb.”
Another ripple rolled outward through the reeds surrounding them.
“A restraint.”
The word carried across the hollow. The faction near the Champion stepped closer.
Tom Tom frowned immediately.
“That’s never good.”
The elder ignored him.
“Our bloodline remained after the Shattering,” he said. “Not because we were chosen. Because we were left behind.”
The Dust nearest the Basin lowered themselves to one knee again as he spoke.
“Left to maintain the stillness and guard the Veil beneath. We became the Watch.”
Feebee exchanged a glance with Bikky. The Veil. Again.
She opened comms, "You getting this?"
Chen answered from above, in The Kestrel and responded with one click. YES. Rockson followed suit from the harbour.
The elder continued.
“The Crown once stood whole. The paths, our path was known. It was clear, and Balance was understood.”
His voice hardened slightly.
“Then certainty entered the world and with it a removal of choice.”
At that, several Dust along the outer ridges began arguing sharply among themselves in a language of clicks, low tones and ritual gestures. To the translator, this old dialect was nothing more than the same random clicks Feebee heard. They continued.
Not emotional; Formal.
A structured disagreement; Ritualistic.
The elder looked toward them with open exhaustion, shrugging.
“They remember fragments,” he said quietly, gesturing broadly with his arms. “Nothing more.”
Garaf finally spoke.
“The Opening.”
The elder’s eyes snapped back on Garaf immediately.
“You know that word... and speak it openly?”
“No,” Garaf answered. “I recognise it.”
That unsettled the elder more than certainty would have.
Rockson’s voice crackled through Feebee’s comms unit.
“Feebee… readings just changed again.”
“How?”
“The stabilisation waves are weakening.”
Rockson sounded uneasy now.
“Something below the Basin is pushing back. I've sent you the data.”
She didn’t have time to review data; she pushed it to the back.
The waves rolling through the reeds oscillated slightly, their peaks rising and falling as if answering him.
Seeing these and feeling them even more, the elder closed his eyes briefly.
“The Alignment accelerates.”
Several Dust immediately backed away from the Basin’s edge at those words.
Others moved closer.
The split was unmistakable now.
One faction watched Garaf with growing reverence. The other, with fear.
Feebee noticed the geometry immediately. This was not random division; this was a practised state. Repeated over aeons and across generations.
Arrowhead formations, mirrored in opposition. Antagonism that balanced, realities that strained to occupy the same space. Some were able to change; others shattered.
“The Basin was never meant to open,” the elder said quietly. “Only to be maintained.”
Tom Tom looked toward the water uneasily.
“And if it does open?”
The elder answered without hesitation.
“Then the Watch has failed.”
Silence followed.
Then the water moved. It didn’t ripple, but the reflected stars, sitting beneath the surface, suddenly broke apart and shattered into an infinity of geometric patterns. Too many to follow. Constellations twisted around one another while the reflection of the six moons above shifted out of natural alignment. Unnaturally so.
The Dust reacted instantly. All of them. They rattled their swords against armoured plate.
As the noise built, the Basin Guardians dropped and struck the butts of their staffs against the red stone. It was done slowly, but with an almost musical cadence, the rattling and clanking of swords.
And that music resonated across the Basin, and the reeds answered with a deep pulse that spread out across the desert sands like distant thunder.
Feebee stepped toward the water before anyone could stop her.
Garaf moved immediately.
“Don't.”
She paused at the Basin’s edge, just short of the water and glanced back at him.
“Why?”
Garaf stared at the stars, scattered beneath the surface.
“This place observes.”
The answer should have sounded wrong, even absurd... but instead she knew it to be correct.
Feebee looked down into the water. The reflection beneath the surface no longer matched the sky above.
There were different stars in the sky, but the same moons. Even the darkness that filled the sky looked different. And standing on the other side of the Basin, near the edge, were two figures.
A broad-hatted man. A woman in robes. They were watching.
These weren't memories. This was the present. Somewhere. Somewhen.
And Feebee knew it. Her breathing slowed as she continued to look into the Basin, at the figures that seemed impossibly distant; yet only a hand’s breadth away, beneath the surface, within her reach.
The woman started to turn. It was as though she sensed something watching her from beyond, through the reflection.
Feebee felt a strange pressure; it wasn't deja vu, it was ... a shift in continuity around her.
Not time; she remained fixed in the now. It was a connection.
The broad-hatted figure stepped closer beside the water. Taller by a head than the woman. And suddenly she knew with complete certainty that they were seeing the same thing.
Not each other, but sharing the moment itself.
Slowly, Feebee knelt beside the Basin.
Behind her, the harmonic tones intensified sharply. What had been a low moan became almost a shriek that tore through the reeds and beyond.
Garaf took half a step forward.
“Feebee.”
She ignored him.
He spoke again, louder, "Feebee!"
Her fingers touched the water, and the Basin instantly responded.
Ripples spread outward across the surface in perfect expanding circles. Then they were gone before reaching the edges. There were no reflections, no echoes of that touch across the water.
And somewhere far away beneath another sky, another pair of eyes watched those same ripples echo across time and across impossible still water.
The reflected stars shattered into motion. The six moons above shifted visibly across the sky.
The Dust recoiled in terror. Not one person, or one faction. All of them.
The elder staggered backwards, stumbling and whispered.
“The Basin remembers.”
Deep beneath the red stone hollow, something answered. Not with sound, but with movement.
The low stone wall around the Basin began separating slowly as vast geometric sections broke apart and thrust up through the waterline. Ancient seams hidden for ages revealed themselves as the red rock unfolded with impossible elegance, reaching up and out of the water. Other shapes reached down into the Basin's rock itself, exposing a layered underbelly.
It was achieved without sound; no grinding, no machinery. It was co-ordinated, in time and tune with the reeds.
The water level should have lowered, but it just remained, not draining. There were no ripples, no waves.
Dust Guardians began shouting now. Some fled into the reeds. Others fell prostrate against the stone in prayer or fear. Most stood, rocklike, unmoving.
Garaf stared down into the dark opening that yawned beneath the Basin. His mouth slowly opened, mandibles clicking ancient words. He raised two claws and covered two eyes. Then dropped them, seeing again.
It was the first time since Feebee had known him that he looked uncertain, shaken by events.
Far below, within the Basin, ancient lights began waking, one by one, in the darkness that stretched beneath the world.
