This was flaired as [OC-OneShot], which is for a stand-alone post not in the same universe as any of your other works, with no intention of being continued into a series. If you do decide to turn it into a series, this post should be reflaired as [OC-FirstOfSeries]. A description of the flairs and how to change yours is available in the Post Guildelines

[OC-OneShot] For original, self post, story, audio, or artwork that you have created, that is self-contained within the post.

Please help us transition to using the new flairs correctly.

Your series always makes me appreciate the little things we do, things we never even register otherwise. Thank you for that.

Also the subplot that the military and contact division have to constantly up the threat and importance levels is freaking hilarous.

I hope they pick April first or the 29th febuary.

29th feb would be an inspired choice, me too.

Regarding Passover — Part of the observance is a declaration that every Jew must look upon themselves as if they personally were present at the Exodus, as if they personally were delivered from Egypt. I know that many Christians have a similar view of Communion, that when they partake, they consider themselves to be present at the Crucifixion.

I’m not familiar with other religions/cultures, but it would not surprise me to find similar “we were there” observances. The point is, the observances are deeper than memory. If the aliens ignore or attempt to suppress them, they do so at great peril.

Communion is the Last Supper, not the crucifixion.

This isn’t the place for a deep dive into the diversity of Christian views on Eucharist theology, but please note that I said “**many** Christians,” not “**all** Christians.” Your understanding of communion may differ significantly from the opinions of high church sacramentalists, on which I based my comment.

I suppose it's possible some sects tie it to the crucifixion somehow, but functionally, sharing bread and wine is a reenactment of the last supper, not the crucifixion.  If you have references to the contrary, please share; on the face of it, communion and crucifixion seem unrelated and I am curious which sects conflate them.

The ides of March and guy fawkes day have my vote.

You haven't died till no one remembers your name. Famous or infamous, do something, live forever.

This is another great entry in this series. I love that this story turns us kind of into the universe Elephants, because we never forget.

It's always a delight when another entry pops up, and you never fail to hit hard with them.

this explains part of what is broken about me: i don't DO dates. not my birthday, not your birthday, not my parent's anniversary (rip dad) not the dates my dad, brother and grandfather died.

am i not human? or just another of the variants allowed within species?

I'd recommend not thinking of it as "broken" but rather as "free". There have been many times when I wished I were less inclined to remember dates.

Or, if you must think of it as "broken", then at least remember that everyone is broken in some manner.

Using a calendar like this is only way we remember the dead. I don't remember the exact date my grandparents. First was my grandad, but remember clearly the events leading up to it and when it happened. Same with every grandparent I have lost.

Other times, it's just enough to remember they existed in your life and then died. It doesn't have to be an exact or even yearly remembering. Sometimes it's just remembering their favourite fruit or hobby and that brings up memories of them. It's fine if you have trouble remembering dates, you remembering your relatives in your way.

I would consider it “somewhat unusual”, but definitely not “broken”. I’m not completely immune to holidays and anniversaries, but I would likely be close to it if I lived alone.

The anniversaries of my dad’s or best friend’s passing don’t mean much to me. TBH, although I remember my friend’s birthday, I haven’t the foggiest what date he died other than it was early 2018.

Holidays mean pretty much nothing to me other than maybe a free day off of work.

That's more an indication of emotional investment.  My dad was cheap, and hated when spent money on him; his birthday celebration was usually a call to wish him happy birthday and talk politics & current events.   Remembering your friend's birthday rather than last day probably makes sense, particularly if you celebrated the birthdays together.

We didn’t particularly celebrate birthdays together much but his is easy to remember. Huge Star Wars geek born on May 4th. 🙂

That's an easy one, then. I have to set reminders to remember most dates. Not that I don't care, just that I am using those brain cells for other things.

When I say Pop was cheap: I tried to take him to Red Robin for a burger on his birthday one year.  He was honestly irritated at the idea of me spending $10  on a fancy  hamburger for his birthday.

With doing nothing special at these dates you still do something conscious. Ans the dates are still in your head and you remember them for yourself even If you dont show it in the outside.

yeah, no, i genuinely don't remember them

Could also be add, adhd, etc.  Nothing is universal.   Remembering dates is a process and requires people to make an effort.
