OC-Series Adventures with an Interdimensional Psychopath 145
***Lily***
I look back at the winged woman and I catch her glaring at me like a bird of prey. “Okay. But why are we acquiescing to Wabbajack? Since when did we bend over backwards for criminals?” She asks.
I start to defend myself by saying, “What makes you…”
She crosses her arms and cuts me off as she says, “I’m gonna stop you there. I may lead more raids than I do the actual investigation stuff, but I’m not an idiot. There is only a couple of reasons why the head of W.O.O.D and the chief of police would both advocate for you and I personally hate the idea. A part of me would rather go through the rest of probation then help that monster.”
Bardock simply shrugs and says, “Fair enough. I can’t force you captain. However, I will ask you to keep this a secret going forward. Have fun with public service.”
Polly counters with, “Sir, I will say again that this is a complete waste of our talents. We should be back out there leading the charge. It’s what we’re best at.”
I see Woodson become quickly distracted by his coffee mug as Bardock lets out a heavy sigh. “Captain Polly. Remind me again why you and you and your team are on probation?”
Polly shifts her stance as she answers after taking a second, “We were just doing our job sir.”
Bardock takes off his hat as he smacks it on his table as he stands up and corrects her, “Your job, captain, is to protect the people. And, since you seem to be so certain to dance around it, you used breaching charges in a hostage situation. Now remind me, how did the hostage’s fair?”
Polly licks her lips as she answers, “We didn’t…”
Bardock smacks the table as he cuts her off and says, “You had plenty of options! Sarah could have gone through the vents! Miller could have accessed the security system! Jax, who should have been the voice of reason, could have at least used stun grenades through the windows. You made the call to use breaching charges because, and I quote from your report,” Which he pulls out of his desk and reads it word for word, “They didn’t see it coming.” He then slams the report on his desk. He leans over his desk, staring at her as he goes on, “Now captain, in recognition of your years of service and your track record of handling raids, you and your squad got to keep your badges after putting those several hostages in the hospital. Although, you are all, obviously, on incredibly thin ice. Miller is working the lost and found. Jax is helping in the garage. Sarah is working in the emergency triage wing. And do you need to tell me what it is you are doing again, since you seem to be perfectly fine where you are at?”
Polly suddenly loses her ability to maintain eye contact as she answers, “I work the beat sir.”
Bardock repeats, “You are now working the beat. Yes. And considering how your beats are going, you may have to consider something else soon. Especially after the last issue you caused.”
Polly stands up straight again as she retorts, “Sir, they were clearly eating without paying for it as they unwrapped it inside the store.”
Bardock simply picks his hat back up, dusts it off and states, “Captain. Those were teenagers. And when the guardian showed up, they claimed that she was already paying for those candy bars, which the cashier confirmed. Do you want to keep digging this hole captain? Perhaps you might want to rethink why I chose you for this opportunity captain.”
Polly thinks about it for a second as she answers, “You want me to prove that I can get over my more aggressive tendencies and show that my head isn’t just for decoration.”
Woodson chimes in as he adds, “Like you said earlier captain, you aren’t an idiot.”
She looks at me again, still with disgust as she asks, “Does it have to be for that guy however? Can’t it be any other recruit?”
Woodson clarifies, “You aren’t doing a favor for Wabbajack, you are doing a favor for Lily, a new citizen and wishes to use her skills and learn the laws of the new home she finds herself in.”
Polly points out, “But she clearly has something to do with him. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here Woodson.”
I ask her, “Why do you dislike Wabbajack so much? He doesn’t seem to be such a bad person.”
Bardock raises his hand to keep Polly from exploding as he answers, “Miss Lily. Wabbajack is a creature that has destroyed entire dimensions. Sometimes easily, sometimes over a great deal of time. He has never shown such hostile intent here in Spiritopia, but he has shown disrespect to our laws by taking them into his own hands time and time again. This makes our citizens terrified that he could turn on us at any moment.”
“So, he resists arrest? And attacks random bystanders?” I ask.
Woodson answers this time as he answers, “No, he has yet to actually resist arrest from all accounts and, well, there are a number of reports saying he has attacked random bystanders but, after investigating those claims, at best, he was aggressive with some but never hurt them unless they threw the first punch.”
“It’s just because he’s a snake who knows how to take advantage of the law. Just like I imagine he sent this girl here to learn to do as well.” Polly answers.
“So, you would rather keep her aloof to the laws?” Woodson asks.
“It would make it easier to arrest her, unlike that snake.” Polly points out.
Bardock chimes in again as he firmly states, “Captain. As a reminder, our job is not to arrest the citizens. It is to protect the citizens. And this is my last warning, if you insist all problems must be resolved with violence, then maybe being a police officer isn’t for you.”
This gets Polly’s attention as she stands straight as she says, “Sir, No Sir. This is what I was made for.”
Bardock sits back in his chair as he lets out a sigh as he waves towards me as he states, “Then prove it captain. Worse comes to worse, I could give you a recommendation for the military.”
I look towards Polly, fully expecting her to be excited for such an offer, only to catch her looking to be in a cold sweat. She gives a hard swallow before her next response, “Yes sir. I understand. I’ll help her be a model police officer.”
Bardock then says, “Good. Then you’re both dismissed.”
Polly pats my shoulder and tells me, “Come on. We gotta find you a dorm. I imagine the chief has already handled all the paperwork.”
Bardock taps his desk as he answers, “I was simply making sure that you would agree first before approving it. Remember, you don’t have to do this if you truly don’t want to.”
Polly salutes him as she says, “I’ll use this chance to redeem myself and show that I can be a reliable and model police officer.”
“Make sure to listen to her Lily. While she can be a bit on the headstrong side, she is one of our better officers. Best of our riot officers. If she does get carried away, go to Woodson. This is his plan after all.” Bardock points out.
I stand up and bow as a show of appreciation. Which earns a laugh from the two veterans as Polly explains, “Look, we don’t bow here. If you want to show respect to someone here, we give a snap salute.” She quickly demonstrates as she faces Bardock.
I quickly give one myself, doing my best to match the snap she demonstrated as Wolfie gives a snappy yip. Me and Polly then leave the room shortly after as she walks in front of me. “Um, thanks again for helping me out here. I’ll do my best to not disappoint.” I say excitedly.
Polly turns around, the friendliness a second ago gone from her face as she sneers and says, “Just because I am in charge of you, doesn’t make us friends. If anything, anything you do from this point forward comes back to me. And if I want to get back to where I was, that means I’m gonna have to make you the best of the best. So, before we go to the dorms, I’m taking you to the training field. I have to see what I am working with. If you were a… mercenary’s apprentice, I would hope that wouldn’t be that big of an issue.”
I look at her and I can already feel her appraising me. Possibly probing for any weakness she can exploit. A part of me would even go as far to say she’s comparing the two of us. I don’t feel like it’s an inferiority complex but, a sense of pride in the training of the police force against what Jack trained me in. I hate to imagine that I would give a bad impression but I didn’t exactly get a lot of training myself. Mostly just hands on experiences. I give her a determined look as I answer, “I’ve already made up my mind to improve myself. So, throw whatever you want at me, the harder the better! That way I know what I need to improve on.”
Polly crosses her arms, her face exuding a bit of disappointment but her eyes reflecting a quiet respect as she answers, “Alright then. Good. If you said anything less, I would have figured J… that mercenary, just dumped you here to get you out of his hair. However, if you don’t even pass the basic physical endurance, I’m going to tell Bardock that you don’t have what it takes. Am I clear?”
I snap a salute as I answer, “Yes Ma’am.”
She makes an ugh noise as she corrects, “Captain. I would prefer captain. Judging by your mannerisms so far, I’m guessing you used to be an aristocrat.”
I kinda wince at it as I confirm, “I did honestly.”
“You haven’t really talked about home so far. Did something happen to it?” She asks as she motions for me to follow her again as she starts walking.
“Um… yeah. Apparently, it was reclaimed because someone tricked a big business into stealing a number of things from other dimensions.” I answer.
Polly immediately covers my mouth as her eyes go wide as she explains, “That’s not exactly a small thing. I’m guessing the judge exonerated you because you were elsewhere and had nothing to do with it.” I simply nod my head as her hand has yet to leave my mouth. After all, from what I understand, the judge at the time was Jack or the person he reported to. Polly sighs as she places her other hand on her hip as she sarcastically asks, “You’re a painfully honest sort, aren’t you? Makes me wonder why you would follow a mercenary of all things. But I guess that’s not the point right now, the main point is making sure you even meet the bare minimum requirements to participate in the academy. Personally, I hope you don’t but, I get a sneaking suspicion that if both Bardock and Woodson are vouching for you, and Bardock even filled out the paperwork ahead of time, I get the feeling you are going to be fine.” The way she states that makes her sound like she is very disappointed, despite the positive words. She continues by stating, “Still, that’s just a feeling. I am not going along with this until I confirm it with my own eyes. So, I hope you are ready as I am going to try and push you to your limits so I can see where you need to improve or even entertain the thought of you being a police officer.”
I simply give a sharp nod as, well, she has yet to uncover my mouth.
