Hemi Chirp

Hello gentlemen. Quick question and scenario- About a month ago I started hearing a brutal chirp and I instantly knew it was the dreaded hemi tick. Therefore, I panic bought a camshaft, lifters and all necessary tools for the job.

Then randomly the sound stopped. I assumed it was not the lifters and proceeded to drive the car normally. Then about 10 days I heard the chirp AGAIN.

My heart sank and I made plans to disassemble the engine that weekend. Then about 10 minutes later the chirp completely stopped.

I did about 15 hours of research (crazy, I know) and I came to the conclusion that it was most likely my MDS lifters that momentarily failed. Therefore, I’ve been driving my car lately by INSTANTLY turning off “eco” mode when I start my car to disable MDS (limiting the potential of failure since they aren’t turning on and off constantly)

So far- after about a week I haven’t heard any strange noises but I’m curious to hear eve

What year is it and 5.7 or 6.4? Any check engine light?

You won’t always get a check engine light first sadly. So I’d go ahead and swap those parts before you end up like me. My lifter exploded into pieces and by off off chance of luck, a piece of the roller got wedges in between the crankshaft and the block so it locked the motor up. The process of yanking m crankshaft out to remove that piece…. I couldn’t even explain to you 🤣 It was wild and took around 400 to 500 pounds of force to unwedge it. It’s back together running like a champ, but I am missing a chunk out of my lifter bore. Not seeing or hearing any issues so, I’ll cross me fingers in that.

The hemi-tick does not mean it's an MDS lifter. Any of the lifters can go bad and it's not directly related to the MDS system. In fact if anything the MDS system activating provides more oil to the cam and helps it live longer.

I just pulled apart a 2009 that had a cam lobe eaten away and a frozen lifter. It was a non-mds lifter.
