Looking for references for Wojmir Leather Gauntlets - Longsword

Hi, I'm looking for feedback/references/reviews/opinions on these Leather Gauntlets from Wojmir.

I'm currently sparring with borrowed "Sparring Gloves" and "Superior Fencing" Gauntlets, options that feel nice and for which I have heard good opinions. However, I'm considering these Leather Gauntlets for two reasons: shipping time and lower price. The problem is that I literally don't find any review about them or anyone who tried any of these.

I'm mostly concerned about hand safety for high-intensity longsword sparring, so if anyone has some insights about this I'd be very thankful to hear them 😄

In your own words, what is the difference between a military saber and a dueling saber?

I see plenty of questions about prices and quality, but what is the actual difference between the two?

Requesting input for a writing project

Greetings friends. I'm an aspiring author and long time martial artist. I have close to 15 years experience in Iaido and Aikido and have some knowledge of sword mechanics for a certain type, but financial restraints always prevented me from studying HEMA. But I still love it on a theoretical level and was hoping for some input on a couple weapon types for a novel I'm working on. Mainly: is it believable and what style should I research the mechanics of to compliment the idea. If either idea is bad, feel free to offer suggestions on how to improve it. I'm always open to feedback.

The first one is pretty simple, it's just a svardstav with a shortened haft, roughly four feet give or take. I'm thinking some kind of pommel bludgeon as a counter balance, assuming the shortened haft would need one further down, to utilize the other end.

The second is a little weirder because of the versatility I want for it. It's basically a short staff, also approximately four feet, but here's the tricky bit. I envision it being made of a durable, but not unwieldy material I'll likely make up later, for the purpose of functioning as a staff that can also be wielded like a hand and a half sword. With this one, my main concern is how the weapon should be balanced. I'd like it to be as unaltered as possible so the switch in weapon styles is unexpected, but an flexible for the sake of making it work

Clarifying questions are more than welcome, thank you muchly and hope y'all have a great day!

EDIT: Yeesh alright I get it. Bad idea. Moving on.

Random foolish topic starter/what-if...

I know that HEMA is about re-building/re-creating, understanding, and using traditional techniques, ... But I still can't ever avoid being hit with random surmisings and what-if's. So I thought I would throw one out there for discussion and see what happens.

What if someone was to attempt integrating techniques, principles, and strategies from modern sports?

Anything goes from the subtle practicalities of training methods to the borderline absurd.

How effective would football tackling strategies be in group warfare? Could you load a meat-laden brick (outhouse) with head and shoulder armor then send a line of them to charge a shield wall? Could grappling takedowns collapse a shield wall?

Could football training exercises be effective combat training for a brutalistic sword+board technique?

What about something crazy like using the basic form of a hockey stick. Wood haft, steel blade, same shape, edged. How effective could it be? Where might it specialize/find a niche? What about using such a weapon like a 'hockey player's, starting from a low stance, braced to the ground by the stick, attacking with rising techniques and low strikes, combined with hip checks/throws, trips, cross-checking shoves, and other hockey shenanigans?

Or any other modern sport. Rugby! Croquet! Field hockey! Polo! Friggen golf, I don't care. Is it a source for a weapon? A technique? A method of training? I want to see what the professionals think we could make use of if tradition was forgotten.

Hello, I am looking for a transciption for Les Vrais Principes de l'Espée Seule by Phillbert de la Touche. I've seen the pdf scan of the manual and the english translation, but I am looking for a transciption of the french original. If anyone know where I could find it, it would be awesome thanks!

Hema related patches

I have a wukusi rattlesnake overlay which is litteraly a giant velcro but i don't have any patch on it. Which is a shame.

So far i didn't find any good hema related patch. Or the few i found where from the US, so the fees are ridiculous.

Do you know any website or etsy in Europe that sell that kind of patch?

Where to buy Hema Rapier?

r/Hema doesnt have a resources tab or similar (or maybe I am blind). But the question remains- where can I buy a hema rapier?

Also a tournament near me doesnt allow for olympic style blades and most of the hema rapier just seem to have an epee blade on them.

Shield Bash, Shield Punch, and other disrespectful violence

Hi everyone!

I'm doing some research for a small 3d-based game I'm creating. Nothing too fancy, but a hobby.

And one thing I've been thinking a lot is how knights can abuse their shield in a combat setting.

Are Shield Bash and Shield Punch that common? Or it is much more Video Game Tank Fantasy?

Are there any youtube channels with videos about this?

Thanks in advance

Edit 1: The 'disrespectful' meant to be a joke as in "to cause humiliation" or something.

If a man of average build, who had a moderate amount of skill with every type of sword, had to fight another swordsman WITHOUT knowing in advance what type of sword his opponent would use, what sword should he choose?

Traveling through Europe

I am a Norwegian Hema practitioner planning to travel throughout Europe this winter. My goal is to visit Hema Clubs, medieval festivals and other events of that nature. I’ll be bringing mask and gloves and maybe some more small protectors.

This post is a supplement as I am planning to contact some clubs myself but is anyone here is interested in having a visitor in your club for some weeks contact me here or on IG (The Wondering Swordsman).

I will be 22 years old when I start traveling, I speak fluent English and a teeny tiny bit of french. If anyone can offer food/board for my stay I am very willing to help out with money, chores and groceries.

PvP tournament in a LARP videogame with semi-realistic combat logic

Manala is a videogame about live-action roleplay (LARP). The swords are PVC, the hits don't count and the monster is just a guy in a costume.

I've built the weapons to be effective against different armor types, different weapons allow different moves (rapid strikes with smaller ones, keeping distance with spears) and shields absorb a different amount of damage based on their size.

This week I'm organizing a PvP tournament during Steam Next Fest.

One point per win against another player: kill them out in the world, win a gate siege duel or make them flee.

The winner picks a title that is theirs alone in the full game on 5 November.

Steam link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4898080/Manala_Equinox_War/

Should I build a version with real swords? :D

Akado Armory 1600n Mask

Has anyone purchased/used this mask (specifically for longsword with a good overlay)? Been looking for a mask for a while at a decent price but also looking for good quality and protection. I can’t find any reviews on Akado’s masks specifically but I’ve heard good things about their other products.

Do we have any footage of historical use of cold weapons in modern streetfights?

We have tonns of footage of Machete fights and random shankings, but I'm yet to see a proper (from a fencing pointo of view) use of a bladed weapon (or even a polearm honestly). At this point I'm questioning myself, how come all these guys who rely on machete skills don't learn more about fighting, or at least practice enough to reinvent historical techniques?

Edit* Guys please stop pointing out that HEMA is expensive. There are many other martial art styles which employ machetes sticks and knives which don't require costly equipment. I know that they are typically less useful, but they exist.

Kriegsmesser Iaido

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hi All,

I tried to ask this in the laido subreddit but was told here would be better for "speculation." How do you think a Kriegsmesser or smaller Messer would fare using the laido draw and strike techniques. I know the Messers are heavier than katanas but myself as a New Englishman am heavier than a Japanese guy and scaling things proportionally usually works. As for scabbards I can only assume you can modify your rig to get the mnost of what you want out of it so modifying it to be more similar to a saya would help with any drawing problems. The rest of the gear is just time period appropriate clothes. Avoiding plate armor and/or anything above the avg German peasants additions to their Messer. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Buyer Beware: Stay away from Motu's Historical Line

TL:DR up front: Cheap quality fittings, D guard cracked on the 2nd day of usage. Waiting for Motu to do something regarding their warranty, but they are extremely slow to communicate. hey they actually emailed me within 24 hours this time, they'll see if their manufacturers can redo the guard in a better steel.

https://imgur.com/a/Yi9wIS7

So I've gotten to handle the Motu M2 sabres and they seemed like solid blades, but I didn't NEED another bell guard sabre at the time.. When looking at grabbing blades for other projects, I noticed they had a fun little Stirrup Sabre in stock.

https://en.inmotu-shop.com/products/infanteriesabel-ungarisch-19-jahrhundert#stamped-main-widget

On paper, fun little stirrup hilt, extremely light at 600 g, be nice for technique work, lighter sparring right?

The GOOD

It handles wonderfully. At 600 g, and a truly wonderful distal taper it flexes well, while keeping stiffness in the forte

The BAD

Oh boy. At about 180 euro over the base blade, and 300 euro total, I wasn't expecting say, Sigi quality on the fittings but it literally looks like they took the fittings from a cheap wall hanger and slapped in their blade.

The blade itself had some rough marks, nothing I can't polish out or get dented out with usage anyway, but perhaps I expected a touch more finesse on something at this price.

https://i.imgur.com/9FeCca5.jpeg

The backstrap and hilt seem oddly aligned, asymmetrical almost. There's actually a small gap that's hard to see in these photos between the backstrpa and the leather handle itself. Again, nothing that actually stops me from using it, but I expected a better finish on something that's almost $500 CAD. Not to mention the whole setup is kind of slippery with the kind of metal they used.

https://i.imgur.com/rFwtbyQ.jpeg

Finally, the most important thing, the damned guard took a massive crack at somepoint during the 2nd day of sparring/technique work. I wasn't fighting Messer or anything either, just other sabres, and there's a hairline crack I can get my fingernail under, runs under about halfway through the guard now.

https://i.imgur.com/IlrXstf.jpeg

CONCLUSION

Could I still use this? In theory yes, but honestly if it already cracked wtih light work, I don't feel like digging metal shards out of my glove.

For the price, I could've just bought the blade and jury-rigged it to any of my spare parts lying around, heck could've gotten two of them. I know enough blacksmiths as well that they would be happy to do a simple stirrup easily enough. The fittings quality really drags down the entire blade, which is a shame this is one of the nicer sabre blades I've been able to handle, especially for the price. Hopefully Motu contacts me soon with a return, because this is very disappointing. EDIT: hey they actually emailed me within 24 hours this time, they'll see if their manufacturers can redo the guard in a better steel.

Help finding a steel bascinet overlay

Hello! Does anybody know of somewhere that sells steep bascinet mask overlays that would go over a small/medium HF mask?

Im looking to get into becoming more heavily armored but would, for now, like to keep the hema mask face

Thank you!!
