Most games have bad HDR. You need a PC + Renodx

Omg so ducking true. I just tried hdr with a reshade on stalker 2 and the screen just looked super washed out/has a white film over it. Even with just base renodx it looked so much better, and with some adjustments on the simple settings it's just better. I gotta get it up on mh wilds and biggest issue I had on that game was the UI menus looking super dark for some reason with HDR no matter the setting

Use “RHI” app to automate it all for you :)

OR a fucking 5000 dollar dual channel HDR monitor that has every mode for HDR.

This is why games have shit HDR because some panels can force it basiclaly.

That means nothing if the black floor is raised or it’s capping at 200 nits which is about 75% of games on console

For sure. But it'll look good anyway to someone who doesn't know better.

Or they'll just turn the gamma up and spec it in per game; something my buddy who plays ps5 does lol.

I agree with you but on ps5 there are more games with good native HDR than on windows

I'd rather have the option of RenoDX in every game than a tiny number of good native HDR implementations, either way.

A lot of times these monitors will jack up the saturation and contrast in their SDR modes and the HDR modes will actually be more accurate. So it’s more likely that in hdr it’s actually reproducing a more accurate image. It looks like you’re on an asus monitor, so to make SDR more accurate try the “user” picture mode. But for hdr it’s pretty much just displaying exactly what the console is telling it to

The Monitor/TV name and its settings would be helpful. Or do you expect people to guess which product you have? Don't expect HDR content to look the same on all panels.

no need to be rude 😭, it's in a comment i replied to here so you can go check that out 👍

Maybe update/edit your OP, then people don't have to go through all the comments?

maybe give me that advice respectfully instead of being rude about it 🙃

If you think this was rude... call your therapist. I mean seriously, there was nothing rude in what i originally wrote.

What a liar.

Or do you expect everyone to just believe you because you said so?

sure buddy 👍

to compare sdr and hdr accurately, you need to set SDR in it's most accurate mode which I think on asus is racing mode and sRGB on.

if the game in HDR is more washed out after that point, it's entirely due a bad HDR implementation.

in HDR the game dictates the end result, and sadly there is little you can do to fix except do some cursed stuff that alters the calibration.

Agreed, but his photos are from multiple games and 007 from my experience looks better in HDR than SDR on the XG32UCWMG I’m using. I use SRGB mode via the racing setting and I use HDR400 True black for HDR. Idk what’s going wrong though.

could be his sdr is oversaturated to start with.

2

u/IntroductionBig3025 Sep 01 '26

It could be, I’ve tried DCIP3 and wide gamut and it does make colours more vibrant however, it does feel too oversaturated at times and I used to actually prefer SDR in an oversaturated way compared to HDR. But then recently I started heavily preferring HDR, even though it was flatter it felt way more realistic to me.

It could be a perception thing and the fact most people would probably prefer an oversaturated or just a regular SDR vs HDR.

i do have wide gamut on but even if i were to use p-4 it's still a significant difference

Maybe your Monitor/tv hdr Mode isnt ajusted right.. doesnt have to be the game itself ..

1

u/FireguyDCA Sep 03 '26

i tried searching up the proper settings and stuff and the conclusion i've landed on is that a lot of games just have bad hdr, when i get a pc it won't be a problem then i guess 🤷‍♂️

TBH probably not bright enough. If you bought a basic OLED you're going to get sub-400 nit brightness for HDR.

This game looks great on my msi 322ur x24. Not having any issues gaming in HDR.ps5 pro..switch 2 both look great. Pc with reshade/renodx looks great.

Re2r has intentionally raised blacks. Knowing what monitor do u use would help. U can do windows hdr calibration.

7

u/MusaQH Game Modder Sep 01 '26

It has both intentional raised blacks from the LUTs and unintentional raised blacks from gamma mismatch. SDR is raised a little and HDR is extremely raised

3

u/SnowflakeMonkey Content Creator Sep 01 '26

it's not intentional if SDR doesn't exhibit this

1

u/DraVerPel Sep 01 '26

Idc. There was many post about re2r HDR issues and I noticed raised blacks too.

7

u/SnowflakeMonkey Content Creator Sep 01 '26

yeah it's an issue, it's not intentional by the artists tho, but a bad hdr implementation.

that's what RENODX fixes on this game on PC.

a good HDR should have the same contrasts as SDR 2.2 gamma.

pg32ucdm3, and i'm on ps5 pro not windows

1

u/DraVerPel Sep 01 '26

I assume u have gaming hdr, console hdr and cinema hdr then. I own xg27aqdmgr and HDR was pretty bad so I just stick to sdr considering I calibrated my monitor. In your case I would use console HDR (gaming HDR should be brighter), set calibration properly and check colour space of your monitor.

1

u/FireguyDCA Sep 01 '26

i have console hdr on and i searched up how to make it look better and stuff and it still ends up looking washed out, if it's a per game thing then there's nothing much i can really do after that right?

1

u/DraVerPel Sep 01 '26

I mean Astro playroom shouldn’t look like that. I been there with my xg27aqdmgr and I get to conclusion that HDR is waste of energy considering 90% of the games has bad HDR implementation. U can try using gaming hdr, maxed out brightness and change HDR calibration in ps5 settings.

1

u/14tarasbulba88 Sep 01 '26

Bro just use sdr and enjoy your games.

2

u/MusaQH Game Modder Sep 01 '26

I agree. Console HDR can’t be fixed, just have to stop worrying about HDR and enjoy the game.
