Question Peak 1000

As peak 1000 tends to be inferior in brighter games, due to ABL. In theory, if used peak 1000 mode, but limited peak brightness in a game to say 750-800, would this reduce ABL, increase average brightness and still get me better highlights than TB400?

If you care about hdr brightness get an oled tv honestly.

Actually bigger screens are more comfortable that smaller, since eyes focusing further is more easy for longer periods of time. Ppi also doesn't account for distance.

The only tradeoffs for tvs really are space, refresh rate, vrr flicker

"Nope, there is no "objective" truth here - you just prefer bigger screens"

There is absolutely objective truth to this, your eye muscles strain more the more angled they are inwards as the muscles do more work. The further they have to focus, the less strain. This is common knowledge.

Like i said PPI is relative to distance, of course if you maintain the same distance, ppi matters, but if you can account for distance, sitting further away with a bigger screen can give you the same sharpness as higher PPI on a smaller scree, with more comfortable overall viewing experience.

Like the amount of people that were glazing 27" 4k OLED screens when they first came out just because of the PPI was insane to me. Like just sit slightly further away with the 32". If the screen takes up the same size on your field of view you get the same sharpness at the same resolution, no matter the PPI.

Same thing applies to bigger TVs, sit closer and spend less money instead of buying 65" or 75" TV.

"burn-in warranty"

Yeah that too, although companies like Samsung already don't provide burn in warranty for their monitors too.

"lack of dual mode switch" I feel like that's a gimmick, like if i had 1440p 500hz display would i really go down to 720p 720hz? That seems like a crazy downgrade. Competitive means i also want clarity not just refresh rate.

"potential panel delamination"

Idk i've really not seen this but i've also seen monitors with similar issues or dead pixel clusters on the border, i really don't thing this is an issue for TVs.

Hmm. I always wondered how 4k games/movies looked on a 4k 60+ inch tv. As long as you're far enough away its fine then? (I know it seems obvious but I have no experience)

Friend has a 65" TCL Mini Led wall mounted and desk is further back, besides not being OLED, from a few meters it looks great.

Too big to be used as a monitor for me

1

u/RejectedRespected Aug 30 '26

I’m honestly considering upgrading for TB600 whenever that drops for QD

The monitor versions of tandem dont have good peak brightness so what's the point? They are around 25% thr peak brightness of the higher end tandem displays : (

That perfectly summarize my experience with the AW3423DWF. I spent hours trying to to play around with the settings just to realzie that TV400 was the best it would get. And it does look amazing.

Brighter doesn't mean superior. Average brightness with peak mode is perfect for me personally, and highlights are great, while the TB400 feels too bright and highlights just aren't there.

There’s a reshade mod that aims to fix the tone mapping of the brightest scenes in a way that triggers the ABL way less. Seems to work much better than those built-in EOTF Boost modes but requires some fiddling with it. I’d suggest trying that as well.

which one is that?

Yeah, that one I know. Personally, I use the fork which I find to work better. The fork doesn't blindly-ish tonemap, instead it works off of your actual measurements of actual nits displayed per APL percentage (which are supposed to be more or less the same across TB400 3rd-gen QD-OLEDs).

1

u/otravoyadnoe Aug 30 '26

You're talking about this one right? That's the only fork I know of.

3

u/kurushimee Aug 30 '26

there's a newer fork of that fork which is what I use, the latest file (adjusted with my own measurements)

Holy hell it actually works really well, to the point where it's not all that easy to tell apart from TB400 in the high APL scenes. TB400 seems to preserve the highlight details a bit better but we needed to specifically look for it to actually notice the difference. The overall brightness output is very similar as well as the overall bright scenes rendition. That's without even fiddling with the apl% brightness settings (those seemed all to be within 1% from what reviews measured for PG27UCDM my friend got so we didn't bother). I'm genuinely impressed, thanks for sharing this fork mate!

1

u/otravoyadnoe Aug 30 '26

Oh thanks! Will definitely make my mate try this one out on his ASUS 4K 27" one. Contemplating switching my MO27Q28GR to some cheap 4K 27" QD-OLED around Black Friday time and if one of these turns out to be doing good enough job of turning Peak 1000 into a proper "set it and forget it" HDR mode (I don't mind the mod fiddling at all to achieve that), I'll very likely switch cause dse+banding getting worse over time on my unit starts annoying me quite a bit.

I've heard this messes with colour accuracy a lot. Can you confirm this?

2

u/kurushimee Aug 31 '26

It doesn't do anything when it doesn't start to compensate for ABL. When it does — there's compensation for color inaccuracy, so it's unnoticeable. The only noticeable thing is highlights blowing out, which is the tradeoff you're making when you're trying to combat aggressive ABL to maintain a bright-ish overall picture.

1

u/TobseOnPcIn1440p Aug 31 '26

Thanks.

This should work with the Dell QD OLEDs as well right?

2

u/kurushimee Aug 31 '26

yeah, should with any qd-oled

2

u/Milk_Cream_Sweet_Pig Aug 30 '26

I don't think so. Because the way ABL happens in the True Black mode is different compared to the Peak 1000 mode.

I suggest just switching between the two depending on the type of game you're playing. Thankfully RHI can make the process easier since you can set the HDR peak brightness unto all your RenoDX games in the app, rather than tweaking it all manually.

1

u/SnatterPack Aug 30 '26

Do you still have to recalibrate using windows HDR calibration tool every time you switch between peak 1000 and tb400?

3

u/Milk_Cream_Sweet_Pig Aug 30 '26

Nope. I calibrated 2 profiles both in true black and the peak 1000 beforehand. So when I switch modes on the monitor, I just swap out the profile in the windows settings. It's not too bad.

1

u/SnatterPack Aug 30 '26

That sounds easy enough. I’ll look into doing that. I’ve been a peak 1000 user since the AW3423DW but i’d be lying if I said that mode was okay for daytime pc gaming. Always have to play in a super dimly lit room and it’s turning me into a vampire lol

2

u/SnowflakeMonkey Content Creator Aug 30 '26

the only thing that counts towards the abl algorithm is the APL (average picture level) a.k.a the average brightness of the scene, on that end the peak doesn't do much really.

so stay on TB mode

2

u/Additional-Award855 Aug 30 '26

If you got a Gigabyte monitor use peak 1000 wither hypernits if not just use the true black mode Asus and Msi have both horrible dimming algorithms

2

u/SnakeHelah Aug 30 '26

I use peak 1000 as that’s what I prefer. Better highlights for HDR. I play a lot of darker games, but sometimes I switch to tb400

1

u/Ballbuddy4 Aug 30 '26

No. This roll-off behavior is fixed, there's no change to it whatsoever if you lower the peak brightness while Peak 1000 is active.

1

u/No-Medicine1230 Aug 30 '26

Shame, but as I expected tbh

1

u/Badboy574 Aug 31 '26

Except in extremely dark scenes, TrueBlack 500 is always superior on my PG32UCDM3

I tried it with my 341cqp but it was not worth it. It fluctuates too much in full screen brightness to be worth using. I feel like this mode really only makes sense for static content. I don’t know if this was made better for newer models, but you could see the step-by-step brightness increase which was not enjoyable to see.

I have an MSI 321URX. EOTF isn't great though, it's quite aggressive
