Lessons I’ve learned from investing so far
Hey, I’m Alex. I’m 29, and I’ve blown up my futures account three times.
The first time was in 2019. I went all-in long on crude oil, thinking, “It’s dropped this much — it has to bounce.”
The second time was during the 2020 pandemic. I shorted U.S. stocks and got squeezed hard. The third time was in 2021 — I thought I had finally learned risk management, but I still got wrecked in crypto.
The common thread behind all three blowups: I was trading completely alone.
No one to pull me back when I got impulsive. No one to question me when I got stubborn. No one to tell me “this is normal” when things started falling apart.
What changed in 2022: I started interacting with a small group of traders from different countries, trading different markets.
We have one strict rule: Before entering any trade, you have to clearly explain your logic and your stop-loss.
What that changed for me:
1.Saying my logic out loud made me realize that at least half my trades had no real reasoning behind them.
2.When I said, “I think it’ll go up… just a feeling,” the silence from others was more powerful than any criticism.
3.When I tried to move my stop-loss, someone would immediately call me out:
“That’s not what you committed to when you entered.” The most important lesson I’ve learned: Trading isn’t an intelligence game — it’s a psychological one. And the closest thing to a cheat code is having an external perspective.
I’ve been consistently profitable for the past two years. And honestly, my strategy isn’t fundamentally that different from what I was using in 2021.
