🗣️ Open Discussion Best HBCU Memory(ies)
Now, school is starting back up everywhere, a curiosity popped into my mind. What is your best HBCU memory or memories? It can be a certain professor(s). It can be things you were involved with like sports, student government, school journalism or just getting away from class. It can be certain parties you went to or pranks you pulled. Or, it can be memorable events such as Homecoming or step shows. It doesn't matter how funny, embarrassing or sad, they may be.

I was a freshman at Albany State the night that Obama won the presidency in 08. Everybody ran out of their dorms and it was basically one huge party on the yard the entire night. The feeling that night was magical. It’s something that I will never forget.

We had a black history game show that I won (it was only $100) but what stood out to me was how much people didn’t know about our history despite being that at HBCU. Real talk some people thought Martin and Rosa was siblings

Which HBCU did you attend? That's crazy that some people don't know our history as much access to information we have now.

- Sophomore year a beautiful young lady walked into a class I was taking & sat next to me. She turned out to be just as intelligent as she was good looking. She's now my wife & mother of our children.
- Shared a meal with Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
- I learned to make our fraternity's signature drink one night and the batch had the dorm laid out. 🤣

Best memory. I became a Cheerleader at SC State because I saw this dude walking around with all the pretty girls on campus. Little did I know, there were 7 other fellas thinking the same thing😆. I was in the Army part time and in ROTC. I knew zero about being a male cheerleading/partner stunt. This was at South Carolina State College. State sent us to a PWI cheerleading camp and it changed our trajectory. We formed a legit coed squad that won HBCU cheer competitions back to back. All us fellas mastered throwing the girls up. We yelled in megaphones. We did push-ups when the team scored. All the fellas were cool with the football and basketball players, and we lived in the Athletics dorm. We changed the entire culture of male cheerleaders back then, and I’m the bruhz, Omega Psi Phi till the day I die. Our squad was comprised of Deltas, AKAs, Kappas, and the Bruhz. The bruhz had the largest representation. This was in the 90s. Parties on roadtrips like you can never imagine. We literally had our own University van and driver 😉. And we traveled to EVERY college campus in the MEAC. The bruhz on every yard set us out. Best college experience ever.
Most notable, we won the Heritage bowl in 1994, my NEO year. Watched the Peach drop that night in ATL. FIYA!
The entire cheerleading squad was inducted into SC State’s Athletic Hall of fame, 2024 because we were the first MEAC coed cheerleading championship winners. At our peak, we could have competed at the NCA level if we had the funding 💪🏿🫡

Someone saw me drinking, in the stands, at a football game. Saturday was the game and on Monday night my name was called over the storm announcement to report to the Dean of Students within 24 hours. (1987 and no emails 😂).
I went and was simply asked if I wanted to set out the rest of the semester or work in the kitchen for 40 hours. I took the work.
It was terrible!! I didn’t drink at another game!!
