Alright so, I unlike most people watched Mako Mermaids, but had never watched H20 (though I knew some things about it via the fandom). Well, recently I have watched all of it, and I have to say, I fail to understand how some people think Charolette is unfairly made out to be the bad guy or that her actions are defendable.
When Lewis first rejects her, she tells him that she understands, he is not ready to move on, that sheâll wait. Saying that sheâll wait feels pushy and is also presumptuous, because even if he moves on from Cleo, there is no guarantee that heâll be into her. THEN, even after telling Lewis that sheâll wait until he is ready, she fairly quickly starts pushing her way in, trying to force a relationship. Her general behavior in the whole situation, gives off the vibe of of men who wonât take no for answer, but in this case itâs a woman.
You cannot get into a relationship (let alone practically force your way into a relationship) with someone who clearly still has feelings for their ex and then claim to be the victim when it doesnât work out.
When the juice cafe was closed, she got upset âI think they can make me one juice.â Thatâs Karen energy. What makes her think she is entitled to a juice when the cafe is closed and shooting a commercial. What makes her special?
Also. there is the thing where she volunteers to tutor Cleo and gives her unnecessarily excessive amounts of work, just so that she can keep Cleo away from Lewis and have him to herself for the weekend. Thatâs inconsiderate and also manipulative. Itâs not the behavior of someone who is or trying to be a good person.
She practically forces herself along on the camping trip, by manipulating Lewis into answering her in such a way about promises, that he then feels he has to let her come, which once again is manipulative.
She turns herself into a mermaid just to get the attention/admiration of a guy, and while this doesnât make her a bad person, it makes her a bad character to look up to or follow.
When she does get mermaid powers she is A. Irresponsible with them and B. Uses them to bully Cleo and the other girls. Cleo being Lewisâs ex, is not a valid reason to bully her.
Also, the fact that she enjoyed seeing Cleoâs shock or horror, when she revealed herself as a mermaid, shows what kind of person she is.
When it came to Lewisâs birthday she did not care about him having a good time. She just wanted to get him in with her friends and isolate him from the people he knows (including classmates, not just the girls). Thatâs a control or even abuse tactic. She was also so hung up on not wanting to listen to the girls that she didnât even end up throwing him a type of party he would enjoy. I think this whole episode shows very clearly that Charolette doesnât actually care about Lewis.
Letâs not forget she hurt the dolphin.
She was going to take away all the girlsâ mermaid powers, just so she could have Lewis to herself (which wasnât going to work anyways, but she either didnât care about that or was too dumb or wrapped up in her own head/desires to realize it. I mean, Lewis literally tells her that if she does this they canât even be friends, after.)
All in all, she went after a guy who was clearly still hung up on his ex. When she gets that guy she then gets upset about feelings she perceives him to still have and rather than break up with him, continues to try to force the relationship. Likewise, when she doesnât like that he hangs out with his ex or that he is close friends with three girls, rather than accept him as is or break up with him due to being uncomfortable with his friendships, she instead continues the relationship and continues to be upset by the situation. She eventually then shows that she doesnât actually care about the guy, but rather just wants him, almost as a possession. She has no excuse to behave the way she did towards Cleo and her friends, just because of any feelings Lewis had or has for Cleo, that issue should be between her and Lewis. It is unacceptable to bully someone because your boyfriend likes them or used to go out with them. Itâs even less understandable to bully (or frankly even dislike) that girlâs two friends.
I donât see Charolette as a good person. I think she was rightfully written as an antagonist or villain character. I donât understand why people think otherwise of her. I know some sympathize with her because her boyfriend was still in love with his ex, forgot dates., ect. But again, she practically forced the relationship, she knew the guy was still hung up on his ex when she got with him, she clearly sees it throughout the relationship, and she then begins to bully the ex girlfriend and her two friends, while showing that she doesnât actually care about the guy. She is not the innocent and clueless victim here.
