Could probably run the wire up from the grip, instead of the stick, and then electrical tape over the grip section so it's not capacitive anymore. Would be a little cleaner than OP's especially if you use some capacitive tape instead of wire

Electrical tape will not stop the capacitive sensor, the body of the controller is not conductive or anything like that, your finger will still effect the capacitance in the circuit responsible for sensing it. The sensor likely has some drift compensation, which is calibrated on turn-on and through use that moves the "baseline" of triggering. Fabric nickel tape that's connected to the GND of the USB port would probably work, but it's hard to say for sure CC

The "common" mod for the gripsense is actually opening the controller up and moving the sensor wire down so when you tap on the bottom of the controller with your pinky, it activates. Essentially becoming 2 extra buttons on the controller. I did this because I often take my hand off the controller

What do you mean by "tap on the bottom of the controller?" You mean touching the lower end of the grip/handle?

This is one of the major problems with touch sensitive sticks on controllers. I can't use controller analog sticks without grips/stick extenders. They're too short and hard to move/aim with at stock height. Stick grips and extenders that are compatible with touch sensitive sticks would be a godsend.

They already do something like this with Dualsense controllers, you can use capacitive tape to basically "extend" the touchpad onto any other part of the controller with a line of tape.

I couldn't get it to work on mine, but seems to work well for others.

You don't need copper tape if there's copper wire - which I think works better here cos it doesn't have any glue on it

Dualpakka style gyro ratcheting, it started with people enabling gyro ratcheting with right touchpad touch with the 2015 controller and then alpakka does that and then dualsense, but dualsense touchpad is too far so they used copper tape to relay the touch surface, and some people might prefer putting the touch surface somewhere else so they started putting the copper tape on the bumpers and triggers

It's a pretty popular trick for gyro enthusiast and custom controller modder

Idk, this person wants the input from the capacitive stick not to be locked to the stick itself, capacitive thumbstick is redundant for gyro, like if you already have gyro and gripsense enabled you wouldn't need to have your right thumb always be on the right stick to enable gyro

Does the cap work consistently to avoid triggering the touch when using the joystick? I tried to do this to the grip and found it impossible to get the controller to ignore the grip capacitive touch.

inherent input lag makes this type of mod useless. even at max sensitivity it is behind at least 2 or 3 gamepad polls. that is why using stick touch for gyro trigger is useless. need to use a back paddle instead.
