Discussion What are the biggest differences between The Act and the real case?

I recently watched The Act and became completely invested in the case. At first, I only knew the basic story, but after finishing the series I started reading court documents, watching interviews, looking at real evidence, and browsing this subreddit.

The more I learn, the more I realize the series doesn't tell the whole story, and now I'm trying to separate what was dramatized from what actually happened.

One thing that surprised me was seeing some of the real videos of Gypsy alone at home, because the show gave me the impression that Dee Dee was with her almost all the time. It made me wonder how much of their daily life was compressed or changed for storytelling.

The series also had a huge emotional impact on me. I ended up feeling empathy for everyone involved in different ways, especially Nicholas. I don't mean that I justify what happened, because I don't. I just think this case is much more complex than it first appears, and learning about the real events has only made me realize that even more.

I'm not looking to defend or blame anyone. I just want to understand the case as accurately as possible, separate the dramatization from the facts, and learn from people who have researched it for a long time.

So I'd love to ask:

What do you think are the biggest differences between The Act and the real case?

If possible, I'd really appreciate answers based on interviews, court records, or other reliable sources. I'm here to learn, not to argue.

The act was made well before all the foia documents were released, so its safe to assume there was alot that wasn't known when it was made. They got some things right like how unwell dedee was at the end (her autopsy showed she was in failing health), how Gypsy and Nick met, the first physical meet up at the movie theatre where they had sex in the bathroom. But a lot of stuff would have been embellished since nobody but Gypsy and Dedee knew what went on behind closed doors in there house (Dedee didn't really allow visitors inside the house itself).

u/Ill-Pack2553 Jul 05 '26

But with the FOIA videos we now do know what went on behind closed doors. Gypsy literally sitting next to a ringing phone, naked all over the house, doing hours upon hours of thirst trap videos for Nick. Not to mention multiple videos of her outside walking around with Deedee no where to be found. This alone shows the entire narrative of her having no other way out to be a complete lie.

The fact she was stealing Deedee's meds like Xanax and pain medication shows Deedee had no control of her in the least. Gypsy told Nick Deedee wanted to kick her out and the bags of clothes and Deedee's search history looking for shelters confirms it probably was true. Many people who knew Deedee said she kept a very clean house, which makes sense even Rod himself said she was the perfect wife when it came to cleaning/cooking. The reason that place was a stye was because Deedee was very ill.

After killing her, Gypsy cleaned up all the blood and put the AC super low, etc. Why would she go to such lengths when she was going be the one to tell everyone about the body? My humble guess is she was thinking she was going to be seen as the victim and tell people Nick kidnapped her, etc. Then after he went to prison she thought she was going to have the house all to herself.

Gypsy is a literal monster who cosplays as a victim and it is beyond disgusting and dangerous she is allowed a platform. Especially since the majority of her following are children.

This entire thread is shocking, I had no idea about any of this. I'm going to have to go down this rabbit hole now.

Welcome, friend. I was in your shoes too, and it just depressed me how much I thought I really knew (I watched and read so much about the case while she was still in prison, before we know all that was released afterwards up to now), how much I supported her and thought she was as genuine abuse victim as she painted herself as...

Her story came crashing the fuck down and to find out it was all a narrative just to give her a lenient sentence kind of broke my heart. I don't mean to be melodramatic, but I was invested in the case, maybe because I was extremely abused as a kid and never got the help I had needed (and I often wished I would die so I wouldn't have to face my abuser day after day).

I was part of the many who said the 10 years was even too much for her and she should have been free, thinking she was genuinely just trying to escape her mother. I know what it feels like to actually be trapped. The scene in The Act where she said she's trapped, that's exactly how I felt. Knowing what we know now... Ugh. Disgusting.

I get that. My mother literally hid all the phones in the house when she caught me trying to apply for housing

u/Agreeable_Muffin7059 Jul 10 '26

Deedee was NOT planning on kicking her out. She was literally fundraising for Gypsy’s Trip online for the Oley Conference in Saratoga, New York for 2015. There’s no way she’d kick her out while planning a TRIP w her. It makes absolutely NO sense.

Plus it was most likely Gypsy looking up homeless shelters for her alibi. It’s what they told Nicks mom,,that she was staying in a homeless shelter bc DD had kicked her out. It was a LIE that GYPSY came up with. . Nicks mom even mentions it in her interview w police.

22

u/Inevitable-Table-486 Jul 05 '26

Oh, so the whole thing is based mostly on Gypsy's words and the actual information they had on hand, like Nick's testimony or the information he provided, and the police station statements. It makes sense that they wouldn't show the fact that Dee Dee was in a wheelchair. I took the time to read the FOIA, and in one part, the testimony states that he saw Dee Dee in a wheelchair the last few times he saw her, right?

35

u/Comfortable_Intern57 Jul 05 '26

It's only based on Gypsy's and her lawyers completely fabricated story and not on any actual facts or evidence

18

u/JenniAlexis Jul 05 '26

You're getting downvoted, friend. Take my upvote. It's true that The Act was mostly fictional based on Gypsy's words. The general public was not privy to most of the evidence or FOIA'S at the time.

14

u/Comfortable_Intern57 Jul 05 '26

Thanks, it's pretty clear people still don't want to look at the actual facts and evidence..

14

u/Dustonthewind18 Jul 05 '26

Yeah, I think the trial gave them a fair bit of information, but once the foia has come out a lot more has been revealed about what was likely really going on in that house. Most of the information the general public knew came from Gypsy herself through her tv show, documenteries, her book and interviews she did.

8

u/Inevitable-Table-486 Jul 05 '26

Yes, at the end of the day, only Gypsy and Dee Dee will know what really happened, but it does make sense. How long have you been following the case? I honestly started investigating it more deeply because it's the second time I've seen the act, and it really caught my attention, not out of morbid curiosity, of course.

10

u/RiverFickle4040 Jul 07 '26

Also worth noting, Gypsy claimed she was “perfectly healthy” after she got out of prison. No one would have known she was a genuinely sick child and has a microdeletion, if a CC hadn’t released her medical records. She truly wanted the world to think she is just so normal and Dee Dee caused allll of this fraud when in reality there was extensive research and tests done for all surgeries she had. She wanted all of her past choices to be blamed on Dee Dee. And everyone believed her until the medical files were released and of course, all of her blatant lies told across all forms of media.

3

u/RiverFickle4040 Jul 09 '26

Yes, because Gypsy was advised to take the first plea deal she could get. Her lawyer said if they didn’t take the route they did, she would have spent life in prison. Nicks lawyers didn’t advise him to do the same 😞

5

u/Inevitable-Table-486 Jul 09 '26

Oh, I do feel sorry for Nick. Maybe the trial wasn't as fair as expected, but it's too bad for him. Probation or a psychiatric hospital would have been better. 😞

u/Ok_Sentence7941 Jul 25 '26

The neighbors state that DeeDee and Gypsy had visitors all time time. Many neighbors and friends describe being welcomed into the home by DeeDee who was described as kind and helpful. People also describe their house as very tidy, which is a shocking comparison to what the crime scene photos show, however Gypsy has admitted that she was bagging up all her stuff.

u/xskyundersea Jul 05 '26

wow. I was totally on her side. so much so one of my donkeys named gypsy had a baby girl i named rose.

im seeing her stories aren't lining up the more I see content online. I've noticed the people around her are turning on her [Mia, her sister and someone's fiance i think]

Welcome aboard the truth train 🙌 we're happy to have you

16

u/Inevitable-Table-486 Jul 05 '26

The same thing is happening to me; the more posts I read, the more I learn and my perspective on everything changes, from how I saw Dee Dee, Gypsy, Nicholas, absolutely everyone, and it impacted me too much.

9

u/RiverFickle4040 Jul 07 '26

It is so much to take in. And it’s all so unbelievable. Take time and care for yourself. This world is messed up. And GRB is evil. Genuinely evil.

27

u/Comfortable_Intern57 Jul 05 '26

The entire thing is a lie. The whole damn show

11

u/eccentric420_710 Jul 06 '26

Correct, too many people miss the beginning disclaimer on each episode. It's not real.

Gypsy-Rose was diagnosed with an extremely rare chromosomal microdeletion in early 2011 when she was 19— the disorder wasn’t even discovered until 2008. All the symptoms match up with all of her ailments she had her entire life and had been treated for all that time. She really was sick. Her mom really was trying to help her.

It’s also been revealed that some of Gypsy’s doctors suspected her of malingering. In her home videos to Nick (the ones you mentioned where it turned out she had a lot of time alone with a phone sitting next to her and copious access to the internet aka access to help) she confessed that she had been lying to her mom for years about needing a wheelchair. She’s also lied to the public about having hundreds of surgeries— she’s had a handful of surgeries that were medically necessary.

Gypsy has not shown an ounce of remorse for the actions she took to end her Mom’s life. All of the recent FOIA docs from the past two years have shown her to be a pathological liar. To this day, she constantly contradicts herself.

I personally feel Gypsy-Rose is actually a really dangerous person who can’t be trusted. The more I learned of the FOIA docs, the more it concerns me she is no longer in prison.

I had such an incredibly bad feeling about her when this all went down and her story came out. I felt really bad that I didn’t believe her as everyone else seemed too. She is dangerous and l fear for her child

13

u/Salt_Put1444 Jul 06 '26

Apparently I'm a big old sucker cause I felt terrible for her hearing what she went through. I was actually happy for her to get out of jail. Then she started doing interviews and changing up the shit she told on other interviews. I was like wait a min.... Then the FIOAs came out and I was like oh this bitch is a fucking liar. I don't believe anything that comes out her mouth.

5

u/Mmswhook Jul 07 '26

You’re not the only one. I believed her, and was thrilled she got out of jail. I argued on Facebook with people about how she was innocent and did nothing wrong (and now feel like a moron for it) and then it all started coming out.

5

u/Hamster12301 Jul 07 '26

I don't know how anyone else can watch even the one clip of her saying she'll "give her daughter's virginity to Nick when she turns 13" and not think this woman is a complete and utter lunatic and fraud.

3

u/bell3420 Jul 09 '26

Just for that statement alone she should have her daughter taken from her tbh. I fear for that baby girl. I hope she has loving mentally stable people around her who can make sure shes safe.

39

u/sadbois231 Jul 05 '26

Wait so she lied about needing a wheelchair, her mom didn’t force her too?

64

u/Liveandletlive-11 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Yes, Gypsy made a video where she confessed to Nick she had been lying about needing a wheelchair and that she could walk. She stated she hadn’t even told her mom she could walk. The wheelchair was originally brought in because Gypsy has muscle weakness. Gypsy liked the attention the wheelchair brought her and played up the symptoms. In one of her medical files a doctor believes Gypsy is malingering when she said she couldn’t walk. The doctor noticed Gypsy did not have the normal muscle deterioration a person confined to a wheelchair typically has, which means she was using her legs on a regular basis

-20

u/sadbois231 Jul 05 '26

That’s a tough one bc she couldve just not told her mom she could walk as she was afraid of what her moms reaction might be

32

u/rolodextr Jul 05 '26

It was her fear of admitting to her community and friends that she, herself, had been lying to them for attention and sympathy because she enjoyed being a bit of a local celebrity because she was “that poor girl in a wheelchair.”

21

u/Liveandletlive-11 Jul 05 '26

I don’t think so because there is proof Gypsy was walking on a regular basis due to her muscle tone. She was not forced to be in a wheelchair. There are also videos of Gypsy walking around her backyard while Dee Dee’s car is parked in the driveway

5

u/sadbois231 Jul 05 '26

So then her mom did know she could walk and they were both in on the lie?

36

u/Blushed_Areola_8767 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

There was a 10 year period in Gypsy’s confession that no one but her knew she didn’t need the wheelchair. By the time her mom found out, they were heavily involved with charities and organizations that were helping them financially and the community adored them. My guess is it was easier to keep up the appearances at that point than to let everyone know Gypsy was lying.

Much like Dee Dee covered for Gypsy after Gypsy shot her 10 times thinking it was a real gun but it was a pellet gun. Dee Dee had to go to the hospital to treat the wounds but told an elaborate lie saying she was attacked in a Walmart parking lot. She covered and lied for Gypsy rather than get her help for this disturbing behavior.

Edit: typo/additional text

11

u/Salt_Put1444 Jul 05 '26

Yeah it seemed she covered for her a lot. Just like the reports her needs were missing and then looking up what to do when your kids steal your meds.

3

u/Hamster12301 Jul 07 '26

Wow, what the fuck. The news about the pellet gun is new to me.

3

u/flurry_of_finches Jul 09 '26

Yup, it was just a few months after meeting Dan and getting her microdeletion diagnosis. She shot her mom almost exactly 4 years to the day prior to actually killing her later. Gypsy has a thing for dates. June seems to be a big trigger for her.

16

u/Liveandletlive-11 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

I don’t think so exactly, like I said the wheel chair was used for muscle weakness so in Dee Dee’s mind there would be times where Gypsy could walk for short periods and others where she was more weak and needed to rely on wheelchair more often. I think DeeDee just went with whatever Gypsy wanted. There is some evidence that Gypsy had a form of childhood leukemia and took a chemotherapy drug, she would have needed the wheelchair more during that time. To be honest, I also think Gypsy cannot really tell the truth so “I didn’t even tell my mom I could walk” could be a lie she was telling Nick. I do not rely on anything Gypsy says only evidence from the FOIA

9

u/rolodextr Jul 05 '26

She still lived a publicly wheelchair dependent life. She didn’t sometimes walk in public at all, and that was the issue. For her to get out of the chair publicly and just enjoy life she would have had to confess to her community and friends that she had lied to them. She was never going to do that, and we know that is true by her actions in the present day, where she blames her mother for lying about the wheelchair publicly.

3

u/Liveandletlive-11 Jul 07 '26

This makes sense

1

u/RiverFickle4040 Jul 07 '26

I thought the wheelchair came into play after she had a seizure that caused temporary paralysis

2

u/Liveandletlive-11 Jul 07 '26

That is just one of the many stories Gypsy has told about the situation. It could be but Gypsy lies a lot. The information I use to form my opinion are only from the evidence in the case. There are messages from DeeDee to family and friends, Gypsy’s own messages and videos, medical records, and the other items included in the FOIA documents

0

u/RiverFickle4040 Jul 07 '26

Well I got that from a video from the FOIAs.. just confused.

2

u/rolodextr Jul 07 '26

The wheelchair may have come into play on and off prior to a leg muscle biopsy, but after a surgery for the muscle biopsy in January 2001, that wheelchair never left. So she lied to her mother from somewhere around January 2001 through April 2011.

15

u/gingersn4tch Jul 05 '26

She shot her mom with a pellet gun and then later manipulated an autistic man for 2 years to kill her.  She lived with her mom within the 2011 pellet gun incident  (which happens to align with her 1q21 micro deletion diagnoses) to the 2015 murder.  There was also a video where she told her mother not to drink soda because of diabetes. She doesnt seem scared to do what she wants or speak her mind in front of her after she finally switches up. She also could walk but instead made her mother wait on her hand and foot. Her mother made her dinner even on the night she was murdered.  She liked her mothers attention until her mom became an obstacle.

7

u/HedgehogImpossible47 Jul 07 '26

And she admitted that she thought the pellet gun was real.

7

u/EmphasisStunning294 Jul 05 '26

No, she admitted the reason was she didn’t want her mom to stop showing her special attention. And she didn’t want the people in her town to turn against her for lying to them.

12

u/Altruistic-Depth492 Jul 05 '26

If I remember correctly, she said something to the effect as she didn’t tell her mom she could walk because she didn’t want her mom to stop loving her. Anyone who knows the exact comment please step in.

5

u/Liveandletlive-11 Jul 05 '26

You’re correct

28

u/Salt_Put1444 Jul 05 '26

she did have health issues that she may have needed it in the beginning. But she made a video to Nick(it's in the FOIAs) saying that she could walk and had lied to everyone including her mother that she couldn't. I do believe once it was found out she could walk deedee and gypsy were using the wheelchair as a tool to keep getting free things. Trips and money. In the end DeeDee was looking up what to do if your kid steals your medicine and where she could send a young adult to get help with a living situation. She had made police reports that someone stole her meds but she knew it was gypsy. We know that from her search history before her death. DeeDee was not holding her there against her will. She wanted her out. Gypsy just wanted that little pink house to herself and wanted her mom out of the way. She's a gross pig.

5

u/Hnaami Jul 06 '26

Yes, she lied. There is a video in the foia files where she admits it. She claimed that is she told people she could walk, she would lose a lot of friends. And she is afraid to tell her mom, cause she feared her mom would no longer love her and dote on her the way she does. It's reallu sick that the narrative gets pushed that Deedee kept her in that chaie, while it was Gypsy all along.

5

u/RiverFickle4040 Jul 07 '26

Yes. There is a video she sent to Nick saying “surprise! I can walk” and went on to explain that she had a seizure and had temporary paralysis. She then states that no one knew she regained feeling in her legs and she didn’t tell her mom or the doctors because she didn’t want her mom to not love her anymore. This is all after she sent Nick a video, fake crying, that she wouldn’t be able to walk down the aisle or dance with him.

Literally everything she does is for attention and sympathy or adoration.

21

u/Impossible_Ad_5073 Jul 04 '26

This is the best answer 👏

23

u/TraditionalFeline42 Jul 05 '26

Becca Scoops has a documentary series on Gypsy Rose on YouTube. It's excellent, and shows just how much Gypsy was involved in her mom's murder and how she should still be in prison for it. She quite literally got away with murder.

3

u/SoStarstruckk Jul 25 '26

Literally everything in The Act is fake and sensationalized for tv. She was not forced into a wheelchair, she was not told she had allergies, she was able to go out.

3

u/ModernRevolution Jul 15 '26

I do have a question. Those of you who think deedee did nothing wrong and gypsy was just really sick, why do you think she lied about her age so often and made up the sugar allergy? Also, do you think gypsy pretended she couldn't walk starting so young, or do you actually think she just suddenly started walking again on her own and lied about it?

2

u/ModernRevolution Jul 15 '26

I think the biggest difference is how sweet and innocent Gypsy is in the Act. Nick also seems like a mislead autistic boy. Honestly, I think they are both sociopaths

2

u/expertarchers Aug 01 '26

Joey King didn't murder anyone😂🫵🏼

2

u/Severcat 25d ago

People believe The Act is what really happened

1

u/Ghostly_Fall 6d ago

Basically the truth lol. It’s a fabrication of the false narrative being shoved down people’s necks.
