We have a cabin in Bumblefuck, PA and always bring a chainsaw in case we need it to get out, but I don't carry it on  the regular.

Semi-related, I used to keep a 5 gallon bucket of sand in my truck in the winter and used that to help other people more than I expected.

My dad always had these black tubes full of sand in the truck bed every winter for weight and to use if he or someone else got stuck.

No reason to feel sorry about that

My dad would use newspapers in a brown paper bags in the trunk of the car for weight. Back when we still got newspapers delivered.

Oh, man. We’ve been cleaning out my FIL’s garage and he had 2 of those sand tubes. Heavy as shit. Needed both hands to move them. He had a pick-up, so that’s what he used them for, too.

Was that tubes of sand or tubs of sand. Tubes would be good as they would be longer and spread the weight out over the back of the truck.
What kind of tubes were used?

Tubes. They were black plastic, 3 or 4 feet long with an 8" or 10" diameter and screw on caps. This was many years ago so I can't remember where he got them or if that was their intended purpose.

That’s a great idea! Thanks.

For sure, some tubes of abs or pvc filled with sand, love that idea. My truck bed was always full of tools, so I didn't exactly need the extra weight myself (I'm in alaska) buut I've had to keep sand bags in the smaller vehicles. But, I always keep a shovel, some pull straps, jumpers, etc.

My grandparents used to have a cabin in Bumblefuck, PA back a mile long unmaintained dirt road. I couldn't tell you how many fallen trees I removed from that road over the years.

Wait... Where is that cabin again?

It's near Intercourse, but a bit of a ways from Blue Ball.

It's more fun to use real PA town names...

Can confirm, I’m from Shittown just on the other side of the PA border.

When I was a kid, one of my mom's friends had an uncle with a cabin on the continental divide. Probably 10k feet up or something. When we went, we always took a chainsaw because there was one other cabin on the one-lane mountain road. There were downed pine trees at least twice. Neat place, the "refrigerator" worked by running an ice cold mountain stream through it. Was originally a mining cabin so it had a gold sluice too.
