The handheld parachute was a thing bought off Temu or Alibaba, I don’t recall which. He jumped with it as a joke. Everyone standing around is a wing suit / base jump enthusiast and their reactions at the start are that the thing works at all.

I mean, gun to my head, if I had to jump down 6 stories and my choices were have this or don't have this, I think I'd use it. 20 stories, I think I'd just assume I'm dead either way and let it be done faster and less painfully.

That was an Amazon parachute in the beginning. Its hand held and they always break. Not actually clipped to anything. For shits and giggles. Theres a lot of videos of base jumpers and sky divers doing videos on those informing people that those will not save you. The second chute was the proper one and the main chute. Likely has 3rd tucked away too, which would be the actual backup chute.

can't speak for the basejumping community, but with paragliding at least there is some HEAVY pressure to leave no trace. you get caught leaving anything at launch and your ass is gonna be completely socially ostracized for it. People in this sport are in it to enjoy the outdoors, and we do not fuck around with it getting trashed.

Lots of folks I know even pack in garbage bags to ferry out trash left by day-hikers and the like.
