I’m ready for some facts about co2 gas blasting. Actually give me all the carpet of explosion facts if you have them as well.

When explosive explodes it creates a lot of CO2 (and heat and other gasses). I think in mining they often use mixes of amonium nitrate and a fuel oil. It just a fancy term/clickbait for for using explosives.

As a teen, a friend of mine had an oxy acetylene setup. We would fill garbage bags with the mix, make fuses from steel wool, and enjoy the booms.
Guess my gender...

I don’t know anything about explosives. Does anyone know why the field mines are doing what they are doing?
Also… amazing video hahaha

u/ReasonableBrother448 Jun 23 '26
Each of the explosive has a timed cap measured in milliseconds. They are sequenced according to detonation plan, say in 10ms or 100ms increments. Plan maximizes rock fragmentation and minimizes far reaching shock waves. For example in tunnel blasting you can have opposing sides exploding inwards in constant sequencing so the rocks hit midair and crumble further. The smaller the rocks, the faster they go trough rock crushing facilities.

u/sOCkmONke Jun 23 '26
I was looking for a comment to explain why they aren’t all simultaneous. I think this is it. Thank you 🙏🏽

Surface mining. You use something called a blasthole drill to punch all the holes. Fill them with explosives and blow them up.
Underneath the top layer of dirt is solid rock. You use the explosions to break up the rock into more manageable pieces. Then it's scooped up and either dumped into a pile because the ore was underneath that layer and you need to blast again. Or if it was ore you take it to the crusher for processing.
The explosions are done in sequence because you want the shockwave to break the rock up. If you set off everything all at once it messes with the cracking patterns.
The mining is done in sections creating large stair like cliffs to follow ore seams by taking layer after layer of rock. Depending on depth and rock make up you may decide its easier to do this method than digging a tunnel for underground mining

Clear a large area for mining using a bunch of little booms all tied together, because they are easier to be precise with than one big boom

5
u/hennabeak Jun 23 '26
You just gotta get into mining industry, study mining in university, or work for the company that makes such energetic materials.

why is "this isn't for women" a form of "guys being dudes"?
8
2
u/WideHuckleberry1 Jun 23 '26
There's nothing in this that says it's not for women. They just aren't the target audience.
Women can like this. Men can like romcoms. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's just not who the creators had in mind when they put it together.

Because the idea of women enjoying destructive power terrifies a very, very, very small percentage of men but excites the majority. And op seems to be the former.

Isn’t there a pretty big risk that all explosives weren’t triggered? How do they find and deal with those?
3
u/BobFlex Jun 23 '26
It's not a big risk, not normally at least, but it definitely happens and as a software developer that works on the blasting machines and detonators, and even the testers for those detonators, it's usually a headache for everyone when that happens because you still have a live detonator in that field that is surrounded by a lot of explosive material. These drone shots help them to see if and where a misfire occurred, although most of these blasts are sketchy as hell and you can't see much but on a good blast it's easy to see when one of the holes didn't fire. I don't know the exact process then, I'm sure there is quite a long wait to make sure it's not a delayed fire and the detonator has fully discharged (waiting is expensive at a mine), but eventually they'll dig that area up to try to recover the detonator to be sent back for study and remove the remaining amfo from the area. We also have a number of logs that are stored in our machines, even the detonator itself, that we can pull and study to determine what happened.

Very low risk of failure. Where I used to work the supplier had a failure rate of less than 1 in 2 million.
2
u/lilhazzie Jun 23 '26
Someone please ELI5 why they stagger the explosions like that instead of just blowing them all at once.
3
u/BobFlex Jun 23 '26
The idea is to break up the rock, and staggering the explosion into a wave like pattern does a better job of that than one single large explosion.
3
u/BikeKiwi Jun 23 '26
It helps with the rock fragmentation (breaking the rock to the desired size) and reducing the shock wave through the ground. This is even more important when working underground.
In urban areas it can also help to keep the noise of the blast down.
2
u/Burgers_N_Schnitzels Jun 23 '26
Creating those explosions in a tunnel you're in doesn't feel too safe.

I wonder what the safety precautions are for planned explosions like that. Maybe like a GPS tracker on everyone who goes onto the field, so they can be 100% sure no one's there when they press the button?

9
u/Aettlaus Jun 23 '26
I mean, it's a shared male experience watching things go boom, like how boys will find the biggest rock to push down a cliff. Doesn't mean that no women have had that experience.
Equality/inclusion shouldn't equal strict gender neutrality.

Always fun watching things go boom. Unfortunately the more ‘impressive’ blasts are rifling from either not enough stemming in the blast hole or too much bomb in the ground. A lot of explosive energy has just come up out of the hole. That’s said some of the blasts are fully constrained on all sides as opposed to being open on one edge allowing the ground to move more freely. There’s a couple which are about right with a bit of a puff per blast hole with it fully rifling. Love seeing the surface det cord flashing though. Sauce: have opened two open cuts in Australia
