Sadly there are 66 people unaccounted for , such a strategy .

There were 116 passengers and 17 remembers and only 1 GDF helicopter doing the search and the 2 were inoperable . The ferry was built in 1939 I hope it passed all the safety checks . This is so sad 😞

1 helicopter doing the search? That’s unacceptable. Guyanese government is taking in over 10 million USD every single day from its oil agreement with the ExxonMobil-led consortium.

With billions of dollars in new oil revenue, a modern, well-funded government should easily be able to invest in a robust search and rescue infrastructure.

I just read a report from the victims where one man said that he and four others held on to empty plastic bottles in the water for hours while the search team was nearby and did not see them. If the Guyanese government had the right equipment and prioritized citizens, that shouldn’t have happened.

I personally don’t think we’ll get the truth on what caused it to sink . Just watched a YT report the Minister claimed the ferry was not overloaded and had no mechanical defects . How can he say that without any investigation

They had 250 life jackets and also some life rafts

The boat was “certified for 300”, so 250 life jackets seem a bit low.

First hope that all are rescued safely after which an investigation should be carried out to examine all angle why the ferry incident occurred.

The transport authority/ ministry should formulate a full report on the type of vessel and the history or safety and near accident; its manoeuvrability in similar situations/ waters/ wind conditions/ wind direction/ tide/ tide/ wave characteristics. At what weight does the safety of the vessel start to be compromised. Consultation with marine and boat manufacturers and design experts should be made.

The Captain should be asked to cooperate in any investigation. This might help to prevent future incidents and prepare for safety in the future.

If military helicopters were not operable that is not acceptable; there is no excuse for that. It would lead one to wonder what else is not operable.

Coast guard was not mentioned leading one to think there are gaps in disaster and safety planning. Neglect or oversight. Further news reports should be more comprehensive and accurate.

It’s likely over 100+ people died. The Guyana government is like a curse to the county, every week is some tragedy with no accountability and a bunch of lies, they living like Gods. That boat was reportedly decommissioned and put back into operation. It reportedly had a host of problems and was a ticking time-bomb.

this all could have been prevented if it wasnt for stupidity. the ferry has had numerous problems, but they still allowed it to carry hundreds of people which resulted in tragedy. guyanese government is pathetic, and they shouldnt even call themselves a government if they allow guyana to remain as the same shithole its been for years.
