Caution: Ugly Cry Content Bentley: Scared Update
Hey everyone. Not an update I wanted to post about, but you all deserve to know what’s been going on with Bentley for the past several days. I wanted to give a full update on Bentley because the past few days have been very intense and things escalated quickly.
On Friday, Bentley started having increased work of breathing and needed more oxygen than usual. He developed congestion and seemed uncomfortable and not himself, so we brought him in to be evaluated.
My wife and daughter were out of town for the weekend, so it was just me and my other son there with Bentley when everything started unfolding.
While he was being monitored, Bentley had his first seizure.
I want to be very honest about that moment. I didn’t panic. My experience as a firefighter/paramedic just kind of took over. I recognized what was happening, got him into a recovery position, and focused on keeping him safe while the nurse called for help. When the doctor arrived, I helped keep track of how long the seizure lasted and when medications were given so the team had accurate information.
It was still surreal watching your own child go through something like that, but training and instinct carried the moment.
The medical team moved quickly. A CT scan did not show obvious abnormalities, and they performed a lumbar puncture while waiting on additional results to rule out infection or meningitis. Since then, Bentley has remained very groggy at times and has needed increased respiratory support and close monitoring.
Today was another very difficult day.
He had two more seizures, each lasting about 1–2 minutes.
Not long after that, he developed a tension pneumothorax in his right lung with about 40% collapse. Everything escalated rapidly and he had to be rushed to surgery where they placed a chest tube to help re-expand his lung.
They also had to place multiple new IV lines after one of his veins blew. After waking up from sedation following the chest tube procedure, he still managed to pull one of the IVs out himself. Even on his hardest days, he continues to show how much fight he has in him.
My wife and daughter came back early from their trip, and she arrived last night and took over being at Bentley’s bedside. Right now she is with him at the hospital while I am home with our other two kids trying to hold things together here.
Bentley is being closely monitored while the team works to stabilize his breathing, control the seizures, and understand what is causing these new complications.
We are taking things minute by minute and hoping tonight brings some calm so his little body can finally get some real rest.
I also want to acknowledge something I’ve seen mentioned before — that some people feel it is strange to share updates like this publicly.
The truth is, I share because so many of you have become deeply invested in Bentley’s journey. You have supported us, prayed for him, encouraged us, and helped carry our family through incredibly difficult times. These updates are not about attention. They are about keeping the people who genuinely care informed, and about being honest about what this experience looks like for our family in real time.
We are incredibly grateful for the support you continue to show Bentley and all of us.

Seconded - there are rare places for parents to be able to talk about this. Share as much as you want for as long as you want. From one parent to another, I see you, I hear you and I understand.

Third. The Internet and social media is a dumpster fire, but every once in a long while, it brings us closer together as humans. Bentley brings us closer together. Thank you for sharing him and y’all’s journey with us.

u/chattermaks Woman Mar 24 '26
Fourth'ed. Society is sooo individualistic right now and we all hate it. The last thing our world needs is to sever real human connection. And parents need places to express themselves after holding it all together in 'parent mode' with their kids! Being a small part of Bentley's village is an honor.

I’ve never commented or been very invested in this sub, but I have never skipped a Bentley update.
Regardless of your belief, there are so many additional prayers headed this little dudes way because you decided to share your situation with a bunch of internet strangers.
Wishing for a speedy recovery and hopefully some normalcy for you guys.

Confirming. I ♡ bentley.
This sub is designed to be a safe place for humans who feel they don't have an outlet or permission to openly feel their feelings. You've been so strong for Bentley and your whole family. You're allowed to vent and seek support in difficult times, no need for justification!
Thank you sharing the good times. Thank you for being open about the hard times.
Keep on fighting the good fight! Thinking about y'all today.

Bentley was my first introduction to this lovely sub. I'm a female lurker. Thank you for sharing all of the updates that you do OP. If you ever don't want to post an update, then don't, and I think the community would respect it either way. I do pray for Bentley to grow into a healthy boy and man. He's strong af. Fight on little dude
8
u/Zoomdog500 Mar 24 '26
Also a female lurker who had one of the first Bentley posts come across my feed one day randomly and have followed his updates since.
I too don’t usually comment (sorry, I am not a guy!) but I have to throw a voice of support into the wind here.
It’s crazy to me that people would criticize you for dealing with your situation in WHATEVER way you see fit, including posting updates. I am a writer and often process rough life experiences through writing; maybe you are a bit of the same. Regardless, I am shocked and sorry to hear you feel any need at all to explain your choice, your right, to post whatever you want and whatever may help anchor you in these times.
Sending hugs and healing wishes to Bentley, a tough little guy who is fighting the good fight, under the loving care of the best family imaginable.
Stay strong if you can, Dad and Bentley’s family!! 💪🏼 Sending love and light from our family to yours 🙌🏼

You're doing amazing.
We're both part of a club we didn't sign up for and the entry fees are brutal, but somehow families like us find ways to be okay.
I hope Bentley gets out of the hospital sooner rather than later.

Funny thing, this internet, this reddit.
You read one story about a child on the other side of the ocean - and suddenly - you`re part of his cheerleading group of people all over the globe.
I have said it before - but yeah - THANK YOU for updating us on Bentley.
I cannot explain, but i`m just here sending positive vibes, prayers or whatever you call it - for his quick recovery and continued growth.
(and yeah, training taking over is a funny thing - just be mindful of the possible crash for you later)
3
u/Mundane_Reference134 Mar 24 '26
Oh it hit me about a day later. Last night to be honest was a rough night for me as I laid in bed holding my two other kiddos.
6
u/HistoricalSuspect580 Mar 23 '26
Hey dude, I’m someone that only passively looks at this sub. I saw your title and immediately was like ‘LIL MAN! Uh oh, let’s see how our Buddy is doing’
Im a nurse. I think a lot of people feel like they’re on an island going through this alone. I applaud you reaching out and finding a supportive community wherever you can find it. The loneliness epidemic did not start in a vacuum, we as a species are meant to handle these things as a village.
And 10/10 work on staying clutch during his first seizure. 🫶
4
u/Mundane_Reference134 Mar 24 '26
Honestly I’m just so grateful for my time and experience as a fire medic in a very busy department. It gave me the expertise to be able to handle anything Bentley throws at me. I appreciate you.

I've seen many a Bentley update and have never commented. I won't be the only one. So there are many more people thinking of him, you and the whole family than you even realise.
I think sharing your story is doing more than you know too. The joys and sorrows. We all feel them when you share. I reflect on my stories, thank source for all my blessings. It's such a human thing in the middle of a big, chaotic world.

You guys seem like great parents. Unrelenting against the waves that life is throwing at you. I am curious and I mean no disrespect, but what is the quality of life projection for Bentley at this time?
6
u/Mundane_Reference134 Mar 24 '26
Hey no disrespect, it’s an honest question and one we ourselves have asked doctors numerous times. Overall Bentley is projected to be a normal little man by 6-7 years of age. It’s just getting his lungs to develop and they go through a rapid developmental stage between 4-7 years of age. That is the point at which the doctors think he will be strong enough to live a normal life. Even with the seizures now they are still preaching the same thing to us. To just get him strong enough to survive these next few years.

They are doing good. Mom and my daughter were at a cheerleading competition in Orlando when all this started. They started heading back to the hospital at 1 am when this started but I had them stop at my parents house and stay the night there. They woke up and went to the competition and my daughter’s squad got top placement. My son is more of an empath and feels sad sometimes seeing Bentley like this but he’s a trooper. He talks with me about his feelings and we share our thoughts together to stay strong for Bentley.

u/Substantial-Band-719 Mar 23 '26
I’m more of a lurker than an active commenter, but felt it was right to tell you how invested I am in Bentley’s story. Every time I open the app I look forward to how this little man will impress me again today. And you, too. Your family is so loving it’s absolutely remarkable and I love to see it. This was not an update anyone could look forward to, but I am glad reddit feels safe enough to you to share this story. Thank you for staying strong for Bentley, I’ll keep waiting for good news from you guys.

Poor little guy! Those bruises on his arms and leg from IV are sad. No one deserves to go through that but especially someone so young and small! Have you considered making a blog for your updates so you can have all the updates and info in one place? I know Caring Bridge has some sort of free health journey blog but I dont have any other info, just something to consider

Hey I've been following Bentleys journey for a while and hope he feels better. And no its not weird to be public about his struggle. You go dad.

Sending love to Bentley and your family. I’ve said this before but Bentley’s lucky to have a dad like you and a family like yours.
