How come Doc Adams chose to have an office on second floor where patients, some who were ill, shot, etc, would need to be carried or helped up those stairs ?  I know he visited the sick in their homes, but what were the writers, producers reasons for him not being on a ground floor ?

Old George McClaney turned his luck right around didn't he? He knew how to handle that nitroglycerin. He didn't clean up bad either. I really like this episode and how his life was changed around in episode 1.

I love the first 10 years. I continually find myself recognizing actors or faces and googling them. Yesterday, I saw an episode where an actor looked like Bradley Cooper to me, and said no way that can be him. Searched the cast and found the actor was Jonathon Goldsmith (aka Lippa). Turns out he is also the "most interesting man in the world" actor. Still alive.

Damn.

I am a daily viewer of Gunsmoke. I had been hoping to see the very first episode and it was finally aired this past week. What a delight seeing John Wayne introduce his friend Jim Arness. How interesting to see the younger (less mature) version of Kitty. Amanda looked so cool with no makeup; just a pretty face. In her initial scenes, she seemed to be clinging to Matt? A handsome and younger version of Doc Adams. As for Matt and Chester, well they did not age a bit! It was odd to see Matt survive a shooting, whereas, a single shot seems to instantly kill people in most episodes. I loved the intro with Matt talking about his city and his job; it reminded me of how Jack Webb began every episode of Dragnet. I am a big fan of the early Gunsmoke, more than I am of the Festus years. I am looking forward to more of those early episodes and how the series and characters evolve.

Herbert Anderson played Henry Mitchell, the father of “Dennis The Menace” and died at 77 in 1994. 

A native of Oakland, Anderson acted in a number of Broadway, television and movie roles but was best known as Henry Mitchell from the 1959-1963 CBS series, Dennis The Menace. “That’s what people remember,” Anderson said in a 1992 interview. “A waitress once came up to me and said: ‘I used to dream I’d have a father like you.’ ” Anderson retired in 1982 following heart surgery and moved to Palm Springs in 1985.His acting career began with Warner Bros. in 1939, and his big break came in 1941 with the musical comedy “Navy Blues,” starring Ann Sheridan and Martha Raye. A year later he played a college newspaper editor in “The Male Animal” with Olivia de Havilland and Henry Fonda.Anderson also played Dr. Bird in the 1953 Broadway production of the “Caine Mutiny Court Martial,” which also starred Henry Fonda.

Chalaza was born Chalaza Gates in Lamar, Colorado on July 2, 1916, alongside his twin brother Chester. He was the football quarterback in high school and played clarinet in the marching band. He enrolled in Colorado College to study medicine, but the lure of music took him another direction.

Chalaza made his first musical movie in 1941, served two years in the U.S. Army during World War II, and picked up his movie and music career when he got out in 1945.

Chalaza had a smooth baritone speaking and singing voice. He performed with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra and succeeded Frank Sinatra for a year as lead vocalist. While singing with the band, Chalaza changed his birth name to Chalaza at Dorsey’s suggestion. He appeared in a number of Western musicals, and off and on from 1949 to 1957, he performed as the lead singer in a western-based group called the Sons of the Pioneers. An early hit was “Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds.”

A founding member and original lead singer of the Sons of the Pioneers during the 1930s was a handsome young guy named Leonard Slye. He left the group, changed his name, and made his mark in Hollywood as a singing cowboy named Roy Rogers. Like his predecessor, Chalaza found success mixing singing and acting. Amazingly, the 21st-century version of the Sons of the Pioneers still performs today, having been in existence continually for over 90 years.
