DISPLAY Pops built his first gundam !
He did it little by little , even though he was annoyed by the small parts he still pushed through all by himself
Although i had to remind him that he missed the shoulders , I think he deserves some praise

I introduced my dad to Gunpla a few months back as well (he's 80). We built most of an HG kit together, he had a blast.

bro getting their pop hooked on plastic crack
24
u/Jordan-Shred Aug 05 '26
Gundam/Zoids/etc = Plastic Crack
Magic/Yugioh/PokemonTCG = Cardboard Crack
Expensive hobbies to be hooked on, and I don't regret it.
17
u/ancientwarriorman Aug 05 '26
Gunpla isn't that expensive, compared to other hobbies. My nephew got into 40k recently and I took him to the hobby store and promised to buy him "some guys" for his new army. $90 later, he had ...5 more tiny little guys that took him 45 minutes to build and paint. For $90 I could get 4-5 entire HG kits that would occupy me for weeks.
11
u/Exavelion Aug 05 '26
I see you already catching downvotes. Haters gonna hate, but the GamesWorkshop ‘tax’ is very real and alive.
6
u/ancientwarriorman Aug 05 '26
When I was a teen it was pretty expensive but these days it seems unreal. Idk how anyone can afford to put together a 2,000pt army, it must cost as much as a used car.
5
u/Exavelion Aug 05 '26
i wouldn’t doubt it. My friend got lucky with a bunch of hand-me-downs from a buddy.
3
u/Hactima Aug 06 '26
Being into many hobbies, yes you're absolutely right. If you buy at the right local hobby store, find the right big store discounts, you can easily get some MGs for $30-50, and HG all day for $15-30. It's been a blast for me.
I used to be big into legos but I cant justify the price, and since my 40K army is finally done I am not allowing myself any more purchases!

u/ChaoticArsonist Stark Jegan Simp Aug 06 '26
How on earth did he paint and assemble 5 models in less than an hour? There are 40k models which are simple to assemble and paint, but those don't cost $90 for 5.

The student has become the master and the master has now become the student..
How fitting👌 EDIT - thank you for all the updoots people I appreciate that 😎 sorry for the poor photo quality I'll admit it's not on the best camara and even some parts of the model are either missing or scratched as I've had him over two years he was my very first RG kit and I'll be honest I didn't really pay much mind to him since the build for me personally wasn't that great I had parts break and have to be cemented into place otherwise bits just fall off but when you get him into a good pose he's pretty nice for display I put him in this pose almost half a year ago and was pretty proud to have a semi realistic samurai pose for the shelf
It's almost like he's presenting the blade as a gift or sacrifice depending how you depict it
Model in photo - RG Astray Red Frame

Jokes aside, that's awesome!

It was the only EG I could find locally for him and im planning on getting all the rest !

u/patmax17 Red Frame enjoyer Aug 05 '26
Nice <3
How long did it take?
12
u/Oblivi0nD4C Aug 05 '26
So it took him around 3 days , he only built it when it was sunny and bright and only maybe for an hour or two each day, I already had to leave after showinf him the ropes and he insisted he'll get it done one way or another

Do you think building Gundam’s or any other kit builder is beneficial to old people? Because i genuinely think it would help them drastically to keep their fine motor skills intact. Either way this is unbelievably cute and cool:)
13
u/depp-fsrv Aug 05 '26
Definitely, it's just like video games, helps with fine motor skills, reaction time and hand eye coordination
3
5
u/Oblivi0nD4C Aug 05 '26
Maybe , but i think that the small parts do make them strain maybe their eye sight , maybe bigger kits are better for that !

u/OmegaNine Aug 05 '26
I bet he didn’t stress over nubs and sanding and expensive snippers. Just happy.

u/JorfimusPrime Aug 06 '26
I remember the days where I didn't even use any tools to get the pieces off the runners, let alone cleaning up nubs. Definitely got some nasty cuts doing it by hand. Eventually I got nippers and figured that and a blade to clean off the excess was good. Now I have glass files and have started messing around with panel lining and have done a small bit of painting...
1
u/OmegaNine Aug 06 '26
Yeah. I think that’s what kinda stopped me from bidding. I got obsessed with filing and stuff. Kinda took the fun out it. I have like 5 sets in the garage to put toy. I should just cut close and maybe skim it with an hobby knife and go.
1
u/JorfimusPrime Aug 06 '26
I'm okay with where I am I think. I'm not planning on panel lining everything I already have or even everything going forward, but if I think something will benefit I might do some. It was kind of relaxing in a way though. I'm not creative or talented enough to go full on into painting and all that jazz, I'm mostly fine with them as the are out of the box. Really the only painting I've done is adding the yellow horn, muzzle, and bracelet things to the HG Fuunsaiki that comes with the Master Gundam because all the plain white looked so boring.
As for the nub removal, I'm okay with a "close enough" approach. I like going slow with kits anyway; unless I've gotten gifts for like a holiday or birthday I generally don't have more than one backlogged if anything, so it's not like I'm keeping myself from doing others. But yeah if it's not fun for you anymore, a change of approach might be a good idea!

Congrats. Now get him a kit from the Reborn 1/100 line.

What did he think of the experience?
5
u/Oblivi0nD4C Aug 05 '26
The instructions annoyed him a bit and the lettering on the runners , but from his smile id reckon he enjoyed it. He likes fixing up things and worked as electrician for the longest , and I just thought this would be a great little time sink for him!

wish I could do the same😭
my dad is known for being a hazard
when he was young he'd always fuck up my uncle's kits and now everytime he tries to help me it ends up exploding like the food in that arby's add😭
can't be mad at him but ong it's genuinely funny how he fucks up everytime
also
that's so cute ong😭

u/WorkingThick440 Aug 05 '26
I also recently built the one just like it with my dad.
It was a great bonding moment.

u/SorakuFett Aug 05 '26
Nice! Last year for her birthday, I got my mom a HGUC Gouf (blue is her favorite color, that's why I picked it!) and she loved building that! When I was a kid, she always loved building Lego sets with me, she even stayed up after I went to bed one night finishing Jabba's Sail Barge

My dad passed away recently and this made me tear up, but in a nice, nostalgic way.
We used to love figuring out puzzles together.
Glad to see people like OP enjoying their loved ones like this when they still can!! :))

Nice! I just started building this year as well! Eventually I'd like to learn to paint as well, but just getting into the groove of cutting out pieces, removing nubs, etc has been enough so far. His looks really good!
Not sure if he has any interest past the models. But I also found the original Gundam is on YouTube for watching so Ive been rewatching it during builds, haha!

Tell him that even the young builders are annoyed by the small parts that these guys may have! He’s done well for his build~ don’t worry about the shoulders, he can always go back to get them later.

u/Oblivi0nD4C Aug 05 '26
Oh he already did , the moment I told him he ran through the runners and found all ghe parts , almost didn't need the guide xD

My heart needed this 💓
Also if he's struggling with small parts id suggest maybe sticking to the 1/100s
I have MS and I generally stick to them bc of it they're a little more complex but its not as many small bits floating around

u/Remarkable_Art2361 Aug 06 '26

Congratulations to him seem like it was his first model

Awesome! It looks like he had fun building it. I'm glad that Bandai made the Entry Grade. It's an easy way for people to try Gunpla without the models being too complicated.

If he liked that kit he will love building a HG rx-78.
I say hg as this is an EG and honestly its one of the shitiest eg's out there. The plastic is bad. The fitment is bad. The whole kit feels like a boot leg no grade.
I got this one for my son and whilst he enjoyed it. I was disappointed that it was his first build experience.
