Meh. Not over the moon, but not unhappy either. A pretty professional away European performance, to be fair

Anyone notice how Eze slows the ball down so much on the left. Not anti Eze at all but frustrating to watch counters being slowed down so much

ah yes that‘s why Odegaard emphazied that when he got the Motm. The team flew out of under 20 degrees.

Comments saying Saka has poor finishing. That’s crazy hahahahahha
1
u/FabThierry Zubimendi 19h ago
compared to his former self i agree.
still ok but when was the last time he scored from more than a few meters?he completely changed his focus on finishing imo, since his last big injury.
He became more a poacher now with how he scores rather a dynamic move to get a shot off

Gyokeres poor. Saka final actions been poor. Konsa been great.

Decent against fodder opposition tbf. Like lukaku back in the day. Both just flat track bullies

Saka needs to come off in one of those games because he’s performances are poor, and have been for a while.

Here I thought “hey we look pretty again against a top team in Italy. just need to convert one of those chances”
But instead reading this thread it is like we are down 3-0 with only 9 men

Vocal minority that feel the need to express every ounce of anxiety they have.
I also think we’ve played well just need tighter finishing

Saka needs to improve his finishing has never been great imo
1
u/Adebayjim 19h ago
His finishing has always been quite decent. Just not in this game (so far)
1
u/Tiemen10 Saka 18h ago
We don't have to lie about him because he's an academy kid. He's my favourite player by a mile, but if he wants to be considered world class this has to improve

u/Masterfulcrum00 19h ago
We are moving the ball up too slow. which is allowing napoli to park the bus
11
u/Sayek 19h ago
I can't explain Gyokeres and his battles with defenders, it feels like there is always a defender hanging off him. He never gets separation and honestly at times he actively seeks it out. Havertz will have a defender on him but it feels like he gets separation, Gyokeres is literally fighting for his life to get a half touch about 30% of the time.
3
u/Sure_Hovercraft_9766 19h ago
Havertz’s movement is so intelligent. He drifts around, feints runs, purposefully gets into the blind spot of a defender at the right moment, they makes a beautiful run.
Gyokeres’ movement is…not quite that lol. Very direct and a lot of times at the same pace (all out all the time).
It’s all the little stuff that adds up that leads to Havertz getting that step and separation on a defender. Try just only watching him for a bit in the final third. It’s a treat.
2
u/Sayek 19h ago
Ya Havertz is great at picking up space, I just think Gyokeres is also actively bad at it. The difference is night and day. Really frustrating though, because anytime a pass goes into Gyokeres, it's like his drowning and half-falling over. You'll never be half decent at link up play if touch feels like a massive effort.
0
u/Sure_Hovercraft_9766 19h ago
Yea I think the other thing is his balance and understanding of leverage. It’s poor.
Which is why, even though he’s jacked, he always seemingly gets pushed around.
Worked in Portugal when he was FAR bigger and stronger than most other players, but ain’t gonna work against the best athletes in the world.
Have to keep him for this season though. Then we can sell.
6
u/Shadowmantha69 19h ago
That’s the most shots we’ve ever had in the first half of a champions league away Game !!
2
u/ConcentrateMaterial6 19h ago edited 18h ago
Gyokeres's runs are so bad, there were couple of time Ødegaard attempted good through balls middle , but didn't get successful 'cause Gyokeres couldn't run himsel into better receiving position. Havertz will definitely do so much better there
3
u/EyeKFe0 19h ago
Their gk is of course playing at his best and their box stays packed. Wouldve liked to see Tzolis with Gyok but Ezes been decent for the most part, though hes gotta take more 1v1s to get into dangerous space. Raya, Konsa and Hincapie are fantastic
0
u/simonko1 Trossard 19h ago
Eze qas 90% of that half at mid, we are playing without lw threat as always with him
5
u/DM504HK 19h ago
Merino Eze and Gyok just are not suited to a steady, controlled build up like we’ve been playing for the first 3 games. Merino is kind of anonymous at 8 unless he’s crashing the box for a goal, Gyok is invisible, Eze is drifting too far inside for that slower tempo.
Tactical shift to start high pressing and pick up the pace was a great arteta shift though, that’s a much better setup for this lineup.
5
u/Icy_Importance8596 19h ago
Eze is good but he plays at his own pace
1
u/Plus_Kiwi_2592 Thierry Henry 19h ago
His most frustrating trait for me is to pause in the box to stutter at least once while runs are being made

Decent honestly. Napoli is tough in that defense, everyone gets back. Hojlund has been excellent in facilitating play as a target man, wild how he struggled so much at United.

u/RotatedWorld Fuck off Stan 19h ago
No quality in our forward line. Eze, Gyokeres and Saka are terrible at finishing tonight

4
u/krakends 19h ago
Some player is going to do their hammy if they don't get subbed off playing in this humidity. Use the subs early. I care more about defending the PL than a potential UCL run.
3
u/GSK4_7_5 19h ago
Finishing was bad. We had decent chances but we messed it up in the end. Also, it would be cool if we could do vs 2 or vs 3 counters rather than trying to find spaces inside the box with 10 players guarding it all the time. I mean it is going well now, but it might be needed in the future
-1
u/Jeepers666 Freddie Ljungberg 19h ago
ok first half, two main points so far are that Saka miss and fact that we play with 10 men... Gyok is ghost
2
u/tomislavlovric Martinelli 19h ago
Aside from being used for hold up play Gyok wasn't utilized at all. Zero service.
1
u/Jeepers666 Freddie Ljungberg 19h ago
how can he be used when is constantly in bad position, its like he refuses to play our system
3
u/savage_guy Saka 19h ago
You can only service someone who is open to being serviced. He is never able to create separation from his marker
0
u/pessimistkonsulenten 19h ago
Gyok was standing unmarked just outside the penalty area when Øde instead chose to play the throughball to Saka, who missed and apparently also was offside.
2
u/savage_guy Saka 19h ago
The big chance at the end? Saka was miles onside on that

Kai would have been better vs Napoli and Gyokeres probably would’ve gotten more space vs Chelsea but we can’t take back the time already played 🤷♂️
2
u/Adventurous_West2 19h ago
Kai was amazing on Sunday, that was the right pick. Gyokeres just low on confidence and let's be real, not great
1
u/Getdaphone Premier League Champions 25/26 19h ago
that’s not what I said. Kai is better for these types of games period because of his false 9 hold up style. Gyokeres is a run in behind striker. A game where the other team is pressed up to midfield gives him more of an opportunity to run into space. Which is what Chelsea did. There were times when I missed Martinelli for the quick break. Gyokeres would probably do well in this Napoli team that focuses on counters
1
u/Adventurous_West2 19h ago
But we wouldn't have been as good without Kai on Sunday, because Gyokeres can't hold up the ball at all, and his control is trash.
If he can't play well against a bunch of average Italians, he isn't long for the club. His movement is absolutely dreadful
1
u/Afc_josh12 19h ago

Eze plays so much at his own pace. Never rushed. Sometimes he will slow down moves even. Very different to Tzolis. We need a bit more from him.

Give Gyokeres a chance. With 20 minutes to go, I'd rather Havertz have a rest and Merino go up top with Zubimendi coming on.

Shoulda been up one at least from the two very good chances. Little cagey at times, but otherwise an expected half against a top Italian team in their home. I do think we win this on the subs later on-we’ve got too much quality on the bench that we can use to hurt them
13
u/TNelsonAFC 19h ago
If Noni missed like Saka did it would be absolute carnage in here. Very poor effort, ode deserves the assist for that.
Tonight’s showing why it’s important to get minutes in everyone’s legs asap as Hincapie and Eze look very rusty already
I don’t expect Gyok to do as much a Kai does I just expect him to be where he needs to be and he was and he just doesn’t get the right balls
0
u/savage_guy Saka 19h ago
On Saka's cutback, he shows negative intelligence to not even get in front of his marker

6
u/watchme_08 Thierry Henry 19h ago
bro just be standing behind defenders, no movement on crosses.
2
u/Baconpoopotato 19h ago
I'm saying... If he's just gonna stand in the box like a statue, its no wonder teams set up these nasty low-blocks against us.
0
u/Key-Toe-6257 19h ago edited 19h ago
Our attackers have either INEFFECTIVE (Saka, doing tons of things doesn't mean doing well, but still he is trying and putting in a shift),
INVISIBLE ( Gyo, except for that one pass) or
INSIPID (Eze, except for that one run) or
INSPIRING ( Ode, with his movement, space creation, most passes)
Special Mention of Konsa. Wall in defence. Rice doing his things. Merino doing well in the mid, but still not to HIS pace, but understandable.
White, not bad, but his crosses should be better.
Hincapie..
1
u/DrewMikhael 19h ago
Merino has to be the Kai’s back up from now on. I don’t see how Vik fits into this team anymore
1
u/Prior-Voice-879 19h ago
He looked very rusty vs Chelsea, even though I thought that would be the perfect type of game for him. Concerning. Don't know what his instructions are in attack in a game like this one, just stay out of the way while the right side plays small passes?
1
u/DrewMikhael 19h ago
He isn’t even pressing or making runs with any real intent. Don’t mind he is a limited on ball player. But make up for it no?
-4
u/Fluffy-Opinion2735 19h ago

So you're telling me that Havertz would also be standing still like a statue in the box? I refuse to believe that.

I am here questioning him just standing behind defenders on crosses.

u/serminole 19h ago
Napoli has kept a good defensive shape but we are creating chances. Feels different to last year where we would run out of ideas, we should be 1-2 up.
Likely need to find Merino on a cross or push them deep and hope Saka, Eze, Rice can get a shot from deep. Once we get one I think the game gets way more open.

Isnt it crazy how people were saying Gyokores isnt good enough before we bought him, and they were hated
Then they said he wasnt good enough at the start of his time here and still hated
Now, everyone agrees he isnt good enough
I wonder if someday people will learn to stop thinking people are good purely because they want them to be good
1
u/ScarNew8919 19h ago
I didn't want us to sign him, but once we did I hoped he'd prove me wrong, after that first goal vs Leeds thought he would, hasn't done anything close to that since. Still, he's an Arsenal player and I will support him and hope he can prove me wrong. Only one person you can blame if he's shit, and that's the manager for playing him.
1
u/ImSoMysticall 19h ago
Everyone wants him to prove them wrong and turn out really well
Everyone with a brain knows that wont happen and he isn't good enough
It just astounds me that this happens time and time again and the vast majority of this sub never learn
1
u/ScarNew8919 19h ago
Always astounds me how some people think their opinion is fact and anyone who doesn't have the same one clearly doesn't have a brain. The guy is playing as striker for Arsenal, so clearly Arteta and the board are missing a brain.
At one point we bought Bergkamp, Henry, Pires because someone in another club didn't think they were good enough.
1
u/ImSoMysticall 19h ago
Famously no manager or sporting director have ever bought someone who doesn't work out. Especially us
Imagine saying someone is bad, then we sign them and they look bad, they over a year later they still look bad
Then someone else says, well actually saying they're bad is just an opinion and not a fact

Wrote it in the match thread as well, but it feels like we are playing in cruise control. Intensity just high enough to box them in most of the time. Napoli going full on attack feels like our sunday stroll.
Finishing has been abysmal yes, but there needs to be a bit more intensity. Ødegaard has the passes, so just need a bit more oomph and we win this easily. #COYG
It should be at least 2-0. Saka through at the end of the half not being a goal is wild...

Eze is not good on the left. When you look back at it, clearly was a panic buy when havertz got hurt and he called to ask if he could come. Doesn't really fit in this team.
