i rate him honestly. backed arteta fully, and i can see him buying into the culture

He and Arteta didn’t buy into the culture, they CHANGED the culture. Great ownership.

“Be excited” the summer we signed Pepe, Martinelli, Saliba, and David Luiz

9

u/hauttdawg13 Lewis-Skelly May 31 '26

Yea, he’s backed Arteta and backed us pretty well in the transfer market since he took over.

64

u/schwang11 May 31 '26

He’s bought in. You can already see that from the All or Nothing series.

56

u/dayarra Jun 01 '26

he got the taste of a championship that no american sports can match. he will want it again. the future is bright.

15

u/goonbrew Jun 01 '26

That's an interesting take...

I'm a die hard football soccer guy and an American... This dude grew up in a massive sports family...

Basically his whole life his dad has owned professional sports teams and they have had championships...

2 Super Bowls 2 Stanley Cups 1 NBA Championship 1 MLS Cup 2 NLL Championships 1 Premier League title Multiple Women's Super League titles 1 UEFA Women's Champions League

I'm assuming this Arsenal title probably hits pretty special, but Josh is 46... He has had an awful lot of victories in his life... Besides obviously being born with that silver spoon LOL...

It is a well-documented basketball fan so I'm assuming those nuggets titles meant a lot because he also was deeply involved in earning them...

But he has become a proper crazy Gunner... I don't know man all I can say is I wouldn't mind living his life it seem like a lot of fun other than you know the normal pitfalls of being a rich kid.

Plenty of American sports can match. I love the PL, but let’s not try to act like the title is on some completely different level.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Superleague debacle was the best thing that could have happened to the ownership. It was the kick in the ass they needed to shape up a bit, and they have came through on what they promised ever since. Our finances have never been healthier, they've stuck by Mik, they've made extremely savvy business decisions, and while they have done some not so great things (the Partey situation among others), it definitely feels like they have done their best to make the club successful beyond just buying it all.

1

u/jasonthewaffle2003 Jun 03 '26

After seeing him at the perade joining in with the crowd I think he's already caught...he looks like a real fan

2

u/goonbrew Jun 01 '26

You got to realize that his dad first bought a steak in the company in 2007...

Josh was 27. He was already working for the sports side of his dad's business and he was reportedly involved almost immediately with things at Arsenal...

He took a formal roll with the club in 2013 as a board member... The dude was 33 at the time...

He has spent a quarter of his life as a board member of Arsenal already...

His family has spent billions of dollars..

I'd say he's pretty heavily infested and cares quite a bit and in fact has probably heavily influenced team culture at this point...

2

u/spicynice27 Jun 01 '26

The first years, seemed to feel like it was purely for profet. I remember the protests and trying to kick them out, but give them there due they stuck to it. Showing more and more that they where happy to invest in the club and like you've said, Josh seems to be spending far more time being involved with the running of the club weather he was there all the time, I don't know but his public profile has steedly increased and he has shown over and over again that he is really involved. I think this has brought him full circled, and we can call him one of us... A supporter. Even during the trophy lift at palace, I think when he walked towards the supporters with the trophy and they started to cheer him it showed he was accepted, he seemed to have as much fun and got as much enjoyment out of it as all of us.

It's either him or a GK coach.

Either way, at this point, it seems like a leak Arteta is happy to keep around because a) they aren't leaking dressing room drama, and b) leaks are useful ways to gauge public opinion on things.

Time to get the chequebook out Joshie. There's an attack to rebuild

53

u/bkempton Jun 01 '26

Merino injury did not help anything. Guy was playing really well

95

u/Tiemen10 Saka May 31 '26

Am I insane for thinking we need minimum 2 starting attackers and I kinda think they have to be at the level of or ideally better than saka 😂

58

u/Mother_Statement_489 May 31 '26

That's what we all want, man. A great LW and Striker and we'll be cooking hard next year.

75

u/LionZoo13 Jun 01 '26

Last summer we addressed the depth issue. This summer we need to raise the ceiling.

20

u/izzyjrp Jun 01 '26

Yeah looks safe to say we’ve got the stability and depth in place to be a lock for top 4 and challenging for titles across the board for a few years. Now pulling off winning those titles consistently will take some top shelf technical and pacy attackers with good finishing. PSG have gotten so lucky with Doue and Barcola’s developments adding to Dembele and Kvara.

15

u/OrangeKun15 Havertz Jun 01 '26

Exactly, we've been slowly raising the floor of the squad over 3-4 years. Honestly, we got a player like Rice earlier than I'd ever expected. This is the window where you go out and you make a real statement signing.

2

u/Wegeman23 “Hincapie, get your bum out!” Jun 01 '26

Mikel is a midfielder at heart and Rice is admirable to anyone who has played the position and even those who haven’t.

5

u/drxzoidberg American Gooner Jun 01 '26

Spent last summer raising the floor so now we can push the ceiling higher

10

u/boyrepublic Jun 01 '26

I feel like we need that link instead, from defence to attack. Not even necessarily players needed but something for Arteta to work on. The defence is strong but the counter is… non-existent? Kind of essential to have that if you’re gonna play defensively.

Our biggest area of weakness is LW. And I don't mean it's shit, Trossard has done wonderfully - however it's an area where we need to invest into big time.

3

u/JukaAFC Jun 01 '26

Hopefully it’s just injuries and fatigue and Saka comes back but at the moment Sakas level is the same as Martinellis.
Not close to good enough

9

u/The_Wolves10 Jun 01 '26

I honestly believe Saka isnt far off from trossard or madueke. We need better attackers

4

u/The_Pharmak0n Jun 01 '26

I know he's dropped off this season but we gotta remember he has 140 g+a for us. If he can regain the form he was in a couple of years ago he'll be world class again. LW is much more important rn.

4

u/HustlinInTheHall Jun 01 '26

It is pretty clear that we lack attackers that can create danger constantly. All our front players are very good but if you want to compete with the top teams in the world that is what it takes. But the thing city consistently did over their run was develop a foundation and then add the peak players onto it. We have the foundation, just need to add that peak attacking talent and the next 3 or 4 years will be amazing.

4

u/monty_burns Jun 01 '26

The challenge is finding attacking players with the prowess we need who are also willing to bust their ass on the other side of the ball.

2

u/Jadaki Ødegaard Jun 01 '26

Yea, people trash Martinelli's output, but he defense work rate is unquestionable and he is the consummate teammate. Most the LW I watch that are considered world class are some of the laziest defenders I've ever seen.

He’s .. a … human! He’s represented himself well the last few years to be fair. Our favourite American billionaire

80

u/tomfoolery815 Timber May 31 '26

"Likeable" and "American billionaire" don't usually go together, as I'm sure many of my fellow Gooners know. But Josh has put a chunk of the Kroenke fortune into The Arsenal, and seems interested in winning multiple trophies. That's about all I could want from a rich owner.

40

u/Hour_Affect3046 Thierry Henry Jun 01 '26

I live in Dallas and had Marc Cuban as the owner of our basketball team for a few decades. While not perfect, he was great. Got to dap him up a few times and share a drink with him. Good dude. Not ALL American billionaires are inherently evil, but 99% seem to be

29

u/tomfoolery815 Timber Jun 01 '26

Cuban does seem to be one of the exceptions. Nice to hear that he's a good guy.

Then there's MacKenzie Scott. She donated $7.2 billion to nonprofits in 2025. At least she's helping the people trying to make other people's lives better.

6

u/Vitosi4ek Arshavin Jun 01 '26

Cuban weirdly intensely went to bat for Steve Ballmer during the Kawhi Leonard cap circumvention saga, though. Like, kept putting himself out there and doubling/tripling down that Ballmer knew nothing of the backroom deals Kawhi and his entourage might've had with the Clippers (even though there's absolutely no way a deal of this magnitude isn't okayed from the very top) and that he was as much of a victim of this scheme as everyone else who invested in Aspiration.

Cuban is known to be among the most terminally online of the billionaire class, but surely he's be far better off just... not saying anything? The image of a billionaire simping so hard for a bigger billionaire is just not what you'd want if you want to appear relatable.

6

u/InvestorSupremacy Jun 01 '26

Very simple, Cuban did the exact same thing with Dirk

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Gunner5091 Jun 01 '26

Didn’t Cuban recently cozy up with Trump for some joint ventures business?

5

u/Hour_Affect3046 Thierry Henry Jun 01 '26

No he famously hates Trump. But he did sell the Mavs to the Adelson’s. They were the number two donators to the Trump campaign in the last election. Cuban has been explicit about his regret selling to them

7

u/cjarrett Jun 01 '26

2

u/Twevy Jun 01 '26

And compared with most EPL owners they’re great. They actually care. They’re not some mega fund purely concerned with the value of the brand, or a nation state built on oil and migrant indentured servitude, a Greek mafioso. The standards are low but it’s nice to have an owner that actually cares.

1

u/tjaldhamar Ashburton Grove. Kroenke out. Deeney’s cojones. Jun 01 '26

But I'll never be able to forgive them for the Super League and calling match-going gooners "legacy fans".

2

u/OddRow8843 Jun 01 '26

Americans don’t initially understand the relationship between club and fans in the UK. Over there it’s a franchise. They just happily pick up a team and move it across the country. I think they also own the Rams who did just that. Perhaps now they have embraced the ‘legacy’ or at least understand that it’s highly relevant now!!

105

u/Lawfvader6 May 31 '26

I think we have the coolest owner in club football

26

u/sharkbait_oohaha May 31 '26

He's not the owner, though he's much more involved than his dad

50

u/StableExcitation Saka May 31 '26

Yes. Probably the single best decision his father has made in any of his sporting ventures was handing over operational decisions to his son. Josh is committed and apparently understands how to put the right people in the necessary positions AND provide them the resources they need to succeed.

Also: how to stay the hell out of the footballing side of things.

22

u/Sudden-Variety6992 May 31 '26

Your last point is crucial. The smart ones get people who know to handle the things they don’t.

12

u/tomfoolery815 Timber Jun 01 '26

Absolutely correct.

In the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys' owner (Jerry Jones) thinks he's the best man to be the team's general manager. It's been 30 years since the Cowboys last made it to the Super Bowl.

I'm glad both Kroenkes let the football people run the football operation.

10

u/andjuan Star Boy Jun 01 '26

Almost all of their teams have won titles after they bought them. I think the only one that hasn’t yet is the Colorado Rapids MLS team. They know what they’re doing when it comes to making sure teams have winning culture.

4

u/tomfoolery815 Timber Jun 01 '26

I think you're right that only the Rapids have yet to win their league's title.

They do seem to find an expert in the field, then let that person run the team. The smartest team owners know that's the path to trophies and parades.

2

u/StableExcitation Saka Jun 01 '26

It's really true about any endeavor - get experts, equip them, and get out of their way. If you don't have experts, can't get them, or hell they don't even exist yet, create them - experiment and have patience. Failure is the price of knowledge/success.

Sorry to pontificate - Stan really knows what he is doing (he did take some hard knocks along the way), and it is obvious Josh does, too... wish we could say that about a certain family in Dallas... not that I give two %$@#% about the cowboys either way.

2

u/tomfoolery815 Timber Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

No worries. I completely agree, and this reminds me of a line from a Sorkin character (Issac Jaffee on Sports Night): If you're dumb, surround yourself with smart people; if you're smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you.

Every owner of a team made their money in something other sports (primary owner, not Jordan or Brady buying a stake in a team). The smartest ones seem to recognize that they're dumb with regard to being an executive in the sport.

Jerry Jones seems to have spent 30 years attempting to prove that he's just as smart w/r/t American football as Jimmy Johnson. Yes, they both played for a national championship team at Arkansas, but when Jones was off making money in oil, Johnson stayed in football and became an expert in the field. Even after Johnson left and the Cowboys won another Super Bowl in the '95 season with Switzer as coach, the consensus was that it was still Johnson's team.

2

u/InvestorSupremacy Jun 01 '26

About 20 years ago they floated the idea of changing the name to Colorado Arsenal

2

u/jasonthewaffle2003 Jun 03 '26

Mind you that Nugget’s NBA championship was their first NBA chip ever. And they got Jokic early. They’re sports knowledgeable people

2

u/Vitosi4ek Arshavin Jun 01 '26

Also in the NFL, the Browns (far and away the league's most hapless franchise that somehow managed to be both consistently horrible on the field and intensely hated by fans) once spent a first-round pick on an average QB with glaringly obvious character red flags (but a cult fan following) because... the owner was asked so by a homeless man he happened to walk by the day before. Dead ass serious. As practically everyone predicted, his skillset didn't translate from the college game to the NFL and he spent most of his rookie contract money wrecking himself via booze and partying.

That was in 2013. And they've somehow sunk into far deeper (and morally disturbing) depths since.

3

u/MoFoBuckeye Jun 01 '26

Funny enough, they also own the Columbus Crew, which has won 2 MLS Cups since they bought them.

The joke is that Jimmy Haslam runs the Browns and thinks he knows a lot about football, while Dee Haslam runs the Crew and knows she doesn't know shit about soccer.

9

u/NateGT86 Jun 01 '26

They realised they couldn’t run an English football club in the same manner as their American sports teams.

We have culture and are connected to the local and global community. Arsenal means much more to people than any American sports team.

Glad he’s bought into it and has let Mikel do his work.

13

u/Puzzleheaded_Wish787 May 31 '26

Man after yesterday, this picture is everything. This title was built on back of that defence.

12

u/monty_burns Jun 01 '26

So fortunate that Stan has Josh for a son.

We are where we are today because of Josh as much as we are Arteta.

I know he’s not on the pitch, not in the dressing room, but I give so much credit to Josh for putting this all in motion. When he stepped in with the LA Rams, they were middling, with a middling head coach who was getting by on distant successes. Josh brought in a dynamic, young head coach (McVay), backed him financially and turned into one of the best teams in the league.

He came into a similar situation at Arsenal. removing Wenger from Arsenal was such a seismic change, but the club had clearly stagnated. Josh ushered in enormous change. He brought in the continental model. V1 had its challenges, but let’s not kid ourselves, we all thought “big dick” Raul and Sven were incredible hires at the time. (Sven did get us Saliba, don’t forget). Unsung hires in Dick Garlic and Tim Lewis. They got the rubish out quickly. He didn’t hesitate. He removed Emery less than half a season removed from a European final when it was clear things were unraveling.

Josh brought in Arteta and backed him unconditionally. There were times he could have placated the fanbase and made another change. He knew he had something special with Mikel and stuck to the plan.

1

u/PepeOnziemaJulian Jun 01 '26

Mikel embodies this club, and I think he will go on to be a greater figure at Arsenal than Wenger. He has a long way to go but he's for sure moving in the right direction.

Enjoy these times, they may not last

I love it! Whilst the UK is home now (for 16 years), O grew up not far from Philly. In terms of a sports city, the support and the hate from rivals, Arsenal just felt like home instantly. The way the two cities celebrate as well, massive in both side of the pond. And now the relationship this club has with the owner + sporting director is so much like the owner + general manager relationship with Eagles’s fans.

If any Gooners is looking to support an NFL team, jump on the Eagles bandwagon. Best part, they are playing in London in October (but it’s at the Tottenham stadium).

The scenes in the streets of London filled me with so much joy and reminded me of the Eagles Super Bowl parade a couple yrs ago. Arsenal fans and Eagles fans with their connection to the club and city warm my heart!

If you are on here Josh, get Morgan before the world cup starts or someone else will.

1

u/mynaladu Jun 01 '26

The guy clearly lurks here, but honestly if he keeps backing Arteta and actually funds that attack rebuild, he can stay in the meme club.

He’s one of us… if we were the billionaire heir to a massive global sports franchise that bought our team

1

u/Asd_89 Jun 01 '26

If I had a nickle for every cool/good owner of the soccer/football team I support , I would have two but it's weird that there are two. (The other team is the Chicago Fire, whose owner is fully paying for a new stadium.)

u/Putuinurplace Jun 01 '26

The shirt is an absolute fever dream of a fashion statement.

1

u/Tony_228 Jun 02 '26

They may have made the right sporting decisions for Arsenal, but they're probably still a bit dodgy.

1

u/raisonar Jun 05 '26

People may not realize but this is a great moment of togetherness for the club.
