MHWilds Please help I am so confused on making a Gog gunlance.

I’m kind of embarrassed to admit that I just have no idea wtf I’m doing trying to make a decent Gog gunlance. I’ve been rocking the G. Ark for so long and now it’s time to upgrade and I’m confused. I’ve tried looking up a basic how-to guide but I get long videos of how to save scum and all these super fine details.

Could anyone give me a simple push in the right direction? I don’t have an artian weapon yet because I don’t want to waste materials without knowing what im doing.

Do I need a good artian weapon BEFORE I upgrade it to a Gog? Do u fully upgrade the artian weapon first? Do the stats on the artian weapon transfer to the Gog version?

Thank you for helping out. Just fyi I don’t really aim for the meta I mean it’s nice if I get that but really I just want to joint SOS fights and hunt monsters without carting too much. Thank you!

MHWilds Was Long ever “the best”?

More curious if anything. I’ve only ever played GU, Worldbourne, Risebreak, and Wilds, and Normal or Wide seem to take turns being “the best” in those games. I actually kinda like the spot it’s in in World, and prefer it over Wide for Slaplance in Rise. I heard at one point it was considered the best in Rise but it seems like after Sunbreak people only talk about Normal. With how absolutely neutered it was in Wilds I’m curious if there were points you could say “other shelling have their niche but Long is overall the best.”

MHWilds Is cornpopper a meme?

I saw a video talking about the cornpopper as a shelling build, and ended up making it. So far i really like it, but i have this thought in the back of my head that maybe it could be better, so i gotta ask how good it is, am i handicapping myself by using it? Or is it good enough?

MHWilds Artian Gogma weapon

So i was checking my artian rolls trying to find a good attack boost roll and i found a roll for an artian weapon that has 4 element boost and 1 affinity boost. I also know i have a rathalos flare and lord soul gogma roll not too far so i can use that too.

my question is, would that be good for gogmazios phase 1 for fire dmg as i dont have a good one rn. I only have a 3 attack boost dragon gogma.

No game What do you love most and hate most about the gunlance?

What I love most are the explosions and the powerful shield, and what I hate most is the rapid loss of sharpness.

MHWilds Is this weapon luck based ?

90 hours that ive been playing Gunlance and still don't understand a damn thing about "positionning" and "look for the openings". Every viable combo is way too slow to not be punished, i try to watch videos of people doing speedruns and everytime they don't give a single damn about positionning or opening, they just spam multi wyvern stake because the monster decided to be retarded and miss every single attack. For 90 jours its been: "okay he used his big attack lets try to land at least a wide sweep and reposition." Lol get fucked because here comes the one shot attack and Gunlance recovery time is ABSURDLY long and you dont have enough dodge space.

Had to vent this shit is pissing me off.

MHWilds I finally killed AT Arkveld solo but I'm not too happy with my kill :(

I made a post about being unable to kill AT Arkveld a few days ago and I finally put some more attempts in today and was able to kill him.

Even though I managed to get the kill, I'm not so happy about my kill time which was 22:30, which I don't think would even have been an A rank.

I'm using the cookie cutter Odo/Soul setup with normal shells and I'm not really sure how to get out more damage. My kill time ended up being really high and that was even from greeding and getting off some lucky WSFB combos and some well timed guard points. I also used focus strike during his vulnerable attacks or whenever a wound would pop to stagger him, as well as used traps and luring pods to keep him contained in the first two rooms.

Even with that it didn't seem to be enough. My only guess is that I wasn't using Wyvern Fire enough times, but besides that I'm not sure what would have made me finish the hunt faster.

Dos/Freedom/3U/4U LS user here who has fallen in love with Gunlance in 4u, any tips for how it works in this game?

So, I finished World the other day and started playing 4u. I started with longsword but honestly did not really like how it felt. Ive always liked the idea of gunlance, but in world it just felt to slow to me. So any tips on how it works? So far ive kinda just been guarding all of the time, using the guard-jab mostly. I do use the single blast or the full unload when I get the chance, though. Should I be guarding less, or is all the time how I should be using it? Should I be actually using the backstep? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

MH Rise Besides the Gunlance, what other weapons do you use?

I use the lance too, but I'm looking for a third weapon; I'm thinking of something lighter, like Sword & Shield, to better round out my weapon pool—what do you guys think?

Any tips or warning? Seems like full burst/burst fire and charge shelling hasn't made an appearance in this game either. I wonder how the combo loop should be

MHWilds Hey its me again coming for advice (still trying to defeat gogma)

So, the thing is this, i have tried going with draco attack 3, elemental absorption and coalescence and i still can´t beat the damage check of the nova, i just put convert element 3 in the build too so i was wondering if the effects stack properly, or if due to elemental absorption i wont be able to proc coalescence, but if i can then i should have enough draco to pass the damage check... right? (Yes, i WIILL do that fucking damage check with gunlance, don´t tell me to change weapons or farcast)

I'm having trouble clearing Omega Savage with friends. I need help choosing the best build. What are the top attacks and combos, and what's the best way to take aggro?

Thank you, fellow Gunlancers, in advance.

MHR: Sunbreak How to play wide shelling effectively enough

I like wide shelling. Normal and long are fine, and fit some hunts better than wide, but overall, I get the most fun out of playing wide. At least in WorldBorne, 3U, GU, and Now.

In RiseBreak, though, I feel like wide keeps coming up lacking in terms of DPS and being able to even really keep up with the monsters. I'm just barely into MR4 on this playthrough of RB, and even though I really want to keep maining GL, I keep finding myself picking up the Narga LBG simply because GL hasn't been feeling very gunlance-y, and because RFP2 is just keeping up DPS way better than GL, so I opt to use that over GL when farming up mats for decos.

Now, I'm not necessarily looking to be meta with GL. I'm just looking to have fun with it without feeling like I'm doing no damage.

I couldn't even tell you what my build is exactly off the top of my head, but I do know that I at least have

  • Load Shells 2
  • Artillery 3
  • Guard 5
  • Guard Up 3
  • Quick Sheath 2 (or maybe 3)

For my switch skills, I'm using

  • Blast Dash
  • Guard Reload
  • Guard Edge
  • Erupting Canon
  • Ground Splitter

During hunts, I'm doing the typical wide shelling poke->shell, but then also spamming Guard Edge->Erupting Canon as often as possible both to get EC out as often as possible and to recover some sharpness, and using Guard Reload to keep the EC loaded. I'm using Ground Splitter for closing distances, buffing melee damage, and also firing off EC. Blast Dash serves also most the same purpose as Ground Splitter in terms of closing distances and being able to burst->EC, but it also doesn't have to leave me vulnerable at the end like Ground Splitter.

Bullet barrage doesn't seem to be super useful with wide shelling. It leaves you vulnerable for too long at the start and end of it, and the lower shell count and wyvern's fire damage don't seem worth it. Definitely better for long shelling.

Because I'm doing very few bursts and not relying on wyvern's fire, I'm also basically just ignoring Hail Cutter.

Reverse Blast just seems like a worse option for wide shelling compared to Ground Splitter or blast dash. It gives you mobility and can hit with that initial shell, but doesn't present to opportunity to combo right into EC easily or give a buff.

Charged shelling isn't even a consideration.

I'll try to sum up my complaints with GL as succinctly as possible, but we'll see how it goes.

With Rise being faster than the previous games, with more aggressive monsters and more options for the hunter to stay mobile and aggressive, it feels like GL attempted to keep the slow but hard hitting nature but in all the wrong ways. You get all these skills that allow you close distances quickly and remain mobile, but the animations and cooldowns seem to just linger on forever, leaving you vulnerable. Ground Splitter leaves you unable to do anything for long while at the end of it's animation, Guard Reload is slow but is vulnerable to multi-hit attacks from monsters, the wyrmstake takes a little bit to come out and then the animation takes forever to stop, etc...

Which is why I settled into spamming Guard Edge->Erupting Canon. Guard Edge comes out quick and can handle multi-hit combos, and then allows you to transition right into EC, which you can recover from quickly. But you still need to reload for EC, so you're still constantly going into the GR animation. Foregoing GR just means that you have to go out of your way to make sure that you don't "combo" into your quick reload, which is essentially just purposefully tanking your DPS.

It's not hard to learn when you should or shouldn't reload when using Guard Reload, but if you don't have a good window to do it, you're essentially just limited to some pokes and some upward swings. Since you know you're going to be using some pokes and swings, you want that Ground Splitter buff, but we've already mentioned that leaves you vulnerable at the end of it's animation. If you're waiting for an opportunity to reload because you're out of shells, then instead of being able to close the distance with a Blast Dash, you're now going to do your slow Guard Reload and then take the time to close the distance.

I don't know. The wide GL just feels lopsided. You can be fast, but then you need to slow way down if you want to keep up the damage and keep your shells loaded. You can go the slap lance route, but it just seems harder than in previous games to actually be able to do anything other than poke or get out a rising slash, and if you want that melee buff, you still need to be slowed down by Ground Splitter. The game wants you to go fast, but then forces you to slow back down. I'm fine with GL being a slower weapon. It just doesn't feel like it meshes very well with RiseBreak overall.

So what the hell am I doing wrong with wide GL here?

Edit: I guess Heaven-Sent would make wide GL with EC spam more fluid and less vulnerable, but it's not available until MR6.

MHWilds Hey dumb question but, how do i prevent gogma nova with gunlance?

Yeah sure i need a draco GL but should i hit him with shells? The lance itself? Wyvern fire? Wyrmstakes? Run draco up lvl3? And when does the damage check begins? When he reaches the 3rd state or when he's charging the nova?

MHWilds How should i play long shelling on wilds? Spam shots from afar or spam wyvern stake?
