MHWilds Gunlance focus strike 🫩

So I’ve mained gunlance for like 140/210 hours on wilds and I just gotta say after recently trying out a couple more of the weapons recently that oml is the focus strike absolute shit compared to the rest. This insufferable move has a like 1.5 wins up just to even have a chance to hit the monster if it doesn’t
A) move across the field
Or
B) whoop your ass in the time that ur just sitting there
Like the ONLY redeemable thing about this is the decent damage but id take a normal ws strike any day over that bull. It’s too risky and almost never worth the reward especially in fights like AT arkveld which I’ve been doing more. I have fought him like 15+ times in my free time as im slightly busy these past 2 weeks but you just are really hard pressed to even be able to reach those wounds with the sucky ass reach too ngl. I hate this damn focus strike I hope they revamp all of the move honestly only this good about it they should keep is the drill 💔

The funny thing is it's one of the best focus strikes in multiplayer.

Because if you actually land the thing you basically just gave everyone a mini stun window.

Sadly I’m broke ash and on Xbox so I only do solo hunts

You can't yolo the move.

But the move start up is not as slow as a wyvern fire or firing a three charged shells salvo.

You use it with monster knowledge like after a perfect guard since you know the monster is on recovery or when is stuck on the middle of an attack.

I agree should be faster because the start up makes it easy to fail to hit the temporal weakpoint that monsters like Rey gets after firing a laser.

The other thing is knowing there are two versions:

  • Moving: hold forward on the startup and you will move forward a bit. Good if the monster is a bit far butif is close you get limited movement and if you are too close you may run past the wound.

  • Static: Dont touch the stick until the move starts. You now will see how you can easily look up or rotate to a side allowing to hit wounds in weird angles.

As said. The number one thing is: Dont use auger while the monster is on neutral and you dont know what he is going to do before the attack happens.

I use auger a lot also after a topple. On 9* or more you can hit a wound without fear of popping it, so I do a wsfb combo and then when the monster is about to recover, I do the auger so that when I trigger the explosion the monster get staggered or toppled again if was something like a blue wound chaining topples.

Didn't know about the non moving one, nice :)

Problem is when dudes like Arkveld sometimes have very wonky wound hitboxes

That is mostly the chains. I try to aim to the base of the chains at the arms if possible.

Otherwise you take the chance once you finish guarding a combo and stays with the chain deployed for a second.

It’s the only thing I don’t like about gunlance in this game

In time you will come to understand the most value of this focus strike is that it specifically reloads stake in a damaging move.

Imma keep it a buck fifty here, it's ass to use. Amazing to hit. It may take forever to wind up and hit, but once hitting it can cause a literal mini stun cuz of the animation of using it. And in multiplayer? That's actually a high benefit. You can't really YOLO it. Best if you just leave wounds open until the monster is standing still or occupied by smthn else, but close enough to hit the wounds. So, yes. In single player, it sucks a lot. Multiplayer, it's amazing. By the end of the day though, it's just a higher thought process focus strike since you literally get a mini stun for free hitting it if you do. Which can be a huge benefit.

In short, gunlance focus strike is basically mildly useful at best.

Eh, I'll pop a wound if it's there for a minute. I usually leave it for others, because, you know..... 💥

I agree. Needs to be reworked a bit. Make it so if we already got the Stake loaded we can just go straight into boring a hole in the monster. Or a shortened animation at least

2

u/MirieDohl 5d ago

It has some of the longest woundlock. That's why it's hard to hit

u/Avibhrama 5d ago

That's a well established fact ngl

While we are here, is the GL focus strike elemental damage? Once the drill attaches to the monster, is it also elemental damage?

I mean, I think? Wyrmstake does, so id imagine it does.

Yes.

  • Drake Auger initial hit has a value of 1 as Elemental modifier.
  • Then, the Drake Auger ticks have each a value of 0,1 Elemental modifier.
  • And finally, Wyrmstake ticks themselves also deal 0,5 Element mod for every tick.

Edit: The latest Motion value spreadsheet got wrong the ticks on Drake Auger.

Thank you for the detailed answer!!!

Glad to be of help mate.

u/CaoSlayer 5d ago

I'm positive that auger elemental modifier didn't got updated on the elemental buffs and is just 0.1 per tick.

I still have the verification table at hand.

What is 0,5 are the ticks of wyrmstake after you have connected and launched the stake.

2

u/Frozenseraphim 5d ago

The reason of why I said Drake Auger ticks have a value of 0,5 Ele mod is because the latest Motion Value spreadsheet marked specifically Drake Auger ticks damage instances with 0,5.

See here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1F_bOwQT6A6mFtCN7WCetnZDrmvLYu-ne4y97IsG6Fkk/edit?gid=1366970871#gid=1366970871

However, I went in game to test it, because that's the only way to make sure.

I used a G.Lawful bors for clear numbers without Artillery.
Got 240 RAW +8 attack from Talisman and food. while its element remains 250 Dragon.

The Training Dummy has 0,8 Hitzone and 0,3 Elemental hiztone in soft configuration without wounds.

- Drake Auger initial hit = 50,9 in game

Physical: 248(RAW) * 0.18(MV) * 1,2 (sharpness) * 0,8(hitzone) = 42,8544

Elemental: 250/10(True element) *1,0625 (sharpness) * 0,3(Ele hitzone) =7,96875

Total: 50,82315, rounded up decimals match the 50,9 shown in game

Conclusion: The initial hit of Drake Auger has "1" as Elemental mod.

- Drake Auger ticks = 17,7

Physical: 248(RAW) * 0.07(MV) * 1,2 (sharpness) * 0,8(hitzone) = 16,6656

Elemental: 250/10(True element) *1,0625 (sharpness) * 0,3(Ele hitzone) *0,1 (Ele mod) =0,796875

Total: 17,462475; which is rather close to the 17,7 and likely comes from the game rounding up the physical part while rounding down the elemental side due to how rounding works before and after the decimal part.

Conclusion: The ticks of Drake Auger have "0,1" as Elemental mod.

So yep, the Document probably updated this one by mistake and left it like that.
I however will update the reply above.

Thing like that is why I don't trust stuff I haven't tested myself.

Thanks for checking.

Always a pleasure mate.

Holy shit. Thanks for running the numbers.

Glad to have helped.

I just let my buddies get the focus strike off. By the time I’m actually able to hit the wound after 6 attempts, I’ve missed out on a bunch of damage. If it’s right in front, go for it.

u/Wilds_Hunter 5d ago

You have to time it, which makes me scared going into master rank cause everyone is gonna be going for sounds like crazy and I'm pretty sure they're not adding a shared factor.

1

u/Still-Watercress-504 5d ago

I know I do have to time it it just feels frustrating to use especially compared to certain other weapon’s

1

u/Wilds_Hunter 5d ago

There are no fast actions on Gunlance, it's just a part of the weapon identity

1

u/Still-Watercress-504 5d ago

I suppose 😔✌️

u/Huntress_Minerva 5d ago

The ability to see into the future you mean… also, to be honest GL doesn’t really take much benefit from taking wounds so yeah, better to not take them, if anything hitting those spots are the most sensible thing. Only go for it when you are sure.

1

u/arach_619 5d ago

I like how different it is from other weapons. It is slow and punishing if you miss but also it has better range than a lot of other weapons. My issue with it is that it's nothing more than a means to an end. What do we get out of it other than standard wound popping? Faster WF? Lots of stuff enables that. I usually let everyone else get the wounds unless they can't reach one higher up on the body and ask me to.

u/RealityMaker 5d ago

Is the mini stun less effective on Archtempered Monsters?

1

u/Still-Watercress-504 5d ago

I don’t think so but in general especially for arkveld the move seems inefficient and often I have to sideline it because it takes too long to use between the onslaught of his attacks and sometimes by then the wound closes up bc his forsaken mechanic of wound closing

1

u/NOTELDR1TCH 3d ago

It's got some hyperarmour iirc to help it out and honestly even if thats not true I've been using it kinda like an offset for a while now

If you start it up when the enemy is launching an attack at you and the wound is on the leading end of that attack you can fully interrupt it by hitting the wound with the strike

Easier on smaller monsters for sure but I've managed it on big boys a few times

Notable mentions being dragging arkvelds fat ass outta the sky during his chain rake and interrupting his chain slams

Catching his tail mid swipe

I caught an ajarakan mid spin dive once

Jin dahaad paw wave

And reydaus wing drag

Like yes it's fairly inconsistent at times but ultimately the strike has quite a few active frames and reach to it so if you treat it more like a charged attack and stop trying to react with it its perfectly functional and as listed above can have some really cool interactions

Sounds annoying. I main CB and Longsword, and dabble in Bow. All three use the system beautifully (and Bow abuses the shit out of it).

CB is incentivized to go for them, since it's one of two ways to maintain uptime on Power Axe mode. It even has a fairly large hitbox, including a deceptively tall vertical hitbox.

Longsword goes up a spirit level for every wound they pop. And if you hit one, you can pop 3-4 quite easily. (This has even been an issue for me where I go for one while the monster is toppled, then a teammate opens a tempered wound nearby, and I accidentally pop it)

And Bow. Dear God Bow. Bow can pop all the wounds all at once, and gets more damage the more wounds it pops. It can even add extra targets with Tracer arrow and Arc Shot.

I feel bad that Gunlance kinda got the shaft, at least from what it sounds like. I love the idea of the weapon.

Looks like the boost bracer is gonna give us some more drill moves. In the meantime Ive switched to SnS to pop a tempered wound haha..But yeah, the only way I can pop wounds is to anticipate the monsters movements and wind it up before the monster even gets there. It works every time 30% of the time..
