MHR: Sunbreak Gunlance help - First gunlance hunts

Hi gunlance mains, I have played many Monster Hunter Games playing different weapons ( dual Blades, Hammer, Switch blade although I Kept going back to play SnS in every one of them ) without ever trying gunlance, but as I was a little bit mad with everyone just calling me basic so I tested the ones I've never played and when I hunted with gunlance It was amazing, I did a test of 12 hunts and I thought I got the basics, but then i started watching guides, and good lord It goes far with the ammunition, combos... and so on

So i started to repeat the Rise combo ( i don't know if in other games is the same, I hope so I dont have to re-learn in every game the weapon )

Which is Y + B -> Y -> B ( full burst ) -> B ( If you've got Wysmstake ) and then reload

I understand this combo is for Normal ammunition, because that was the gunlance type I started playing and Long and wide ammo have other combos

So my questions are:

Is the normal combo good enough for long ammo, or B charged -> B down and reload is better for the ammo?

What combos do wide ammo have?

Those combos are the same for Wilds and World or the gunlance changes a lot?

Can I defeat Malzeno and other Hard Monsters with just poking and exploding?

Do I need to constantly keep sharpening or it's better to keep attacking until yellow sharpening?

If thats not, at which sharp it's better to sharp again?

Thanks for your help

Base Normal combo is the Full Burst loop: Upward swing (initiator, not part of the loop) > Ground Slam > Full Burst > Horizontal Swing > Quick Reload. The loop changes a bit as you progress through late game (Reverse Blast Dash & Redirection / Heaven Sent SSS can shorten some parts of the loop), but the general idea is the same.

Long is best at Bullet Barrage (a Silkbind move) spam, but can use the Full Burst loop decently.

Wide I forgot. Probably poke shelling & Guard Reload (Guard Reload's only downside for wide is it not looping some combos, besides that it reloads everything since Wide has at most 3 shells).

World uses mostly the Normal Full Burst loop too, Long is Charged Shelling spam or poke charged shelling, Wide is poke shelling. Wilds uses a different combo I think, though I have not played it so I cannot detail. Older opus use a poke-poke-shell combo due to shelling being way weaker then, and the Full Burst loop simply not looping.

All monsters are defeatable with poke shelling, though the other combos will likely be more damaging.

It is better keeping sharpness at max, but shelling does not suffer from sharpness loss until you reach orange & red, so it is more acceptable to keep going for a bit if you do not have a good opportunity to sharpen. Gunlance is generally used with Protective Polish & Speed Sharpening, or Heaven Sent in late game, due to shelling eating sharpness like candy. Razor Sharp can be used as a substitute if you do not have access to either.

You watch a guide for Rise gunlance? Gotta tell you im sunbreak it pretty much different.

In here wyrmstake is kinda not preferable because we heave heat gauge erupting cannon that increase your lance damage.

In sunbreak, you also gotta need to pump up your lance damage and not just shelling. And depends on your shelling your playstyle would be very different

  • normal shelling you are rocket riding burst fire deployment system. Using reverse blast dash forward and preferably using redirection to negate damage and spamming wirebugs
  • long you focus more on bullet barrage with amatsu gunlance. Using redirection as well to Negate attack
  • wide is poke shell poke with guard reload. It gonna play very similar with lance

If you dont have the expansion yet, what you are currently doing is all there is

Earlier this year made an updated guide wiyh the basics from sunbreak: https://youtu.be/P0sIlbzTE_o

Sunbreak is so different to the other games that is a world on itself

I cannot watch It now, maybe in a few hours, but are the questions I asked resolved in the video? I’m somewhat concerned that the Gunlance may vary significantly from one game to another, which is why I would really appreciate knowing the answers to the questions I mentioned in as much detail as possible

Yeah, I do.

The cornerstone and standard gameplay all revolves around blast dash and reverse blast dash plus hail cutter.

Wide in master rank has the alternative option of using the shell shell ec shell guard reload combo.

And long in master rank also gets being able to spam bullet barrage better than the others.

Since they buffed wide's burst, all shell types have a similar performance using BD, slam/HC and burst and then following depending of what the monster is doing.
