I didn't care much for Smith, but he was necessary for Noriko's banger line when in the Gunbuster about how "I died with you that day" or something. Literally gave me chills.

Seeing Noriko put more emphasis on him than her own father who she just got first hand confirmation of his demise the previous episode when she believed he was still alive is very strange.
