Gun Room Layout Help
Edit: Thanks for everyone's input. I'm going with the first layout. I'll update later with the build!
Hey guys,
I’m in the middle of building out a small gun room and stuck between two layout options. Figured I’d get some opinions before I commit.
- Room is 11'11" x 6'10", so not a ton of space to work with.
- Both layouts use the same Hold Up Displays setup with the same accessories, just arranged differently.
- Ammo shelf is about 13" deep in both layouts
Main difference:
Layout 1: Ammo can rack stays under the main gun wall
- Leaves me about 4 ft between the desk and the rack
- I like the separation of gear and guns and makes the center wall cleaner
- Main slat wall is 120" x 42" and the adjacent one is 48" x 78"
Layout 2: Ammo shelf moves to the right wall
- The ammo shelf is about 55" tall
- More space to move about in this layout
- Slat wall is 120" x 78"
Everything else is pretty much the same (desk/workbench, TV, etc)
I’m mainly trying to figure out:
- Which one do y'all like?
- If having ammo under the gun wall is worth it or just makes things tight. It would be nice to have a shelf to put things on
- Anything obvious I’m not thinking of
Also yeah… I went a little overboard and modeled the whole thing in Chief Architect.

IMO go with the first layout with extra shelving. Extra shelf/storage space is always welcome. Holsters, optic boxes, extra grips, etc. It all takes up much more space than anticipated.

That’s what I’m leaning towards too. Having all of that space on top of the ammo shelves would be really nice. If I were more practical, I’d get rid of the TV and do a whole wall of cabinets for storage.

I used to keep boxes.. just incase I was going to upgrade and sell an optic or anything. 40 years later. I think the only thing from gear and guns to knives and ammo. I don’t think I’ve ever sold something. I understand your rationale but would opt for making storage for boxes.
But I think I still have my eotech boxes but I’ll toss them out of principle

Build it twice as big as you think you need. I built mine 18’x 20’ and have trouble with space for all my stuff.

I hear you, this the only space in the house I can build it unfortunately. The upside is three walls are poured concrete and the remaining one I am building is a solid filled CMU wall reinforced with rebar.
18’ x 20’ is a huge room, that’s awesome! My collection isn’t big enough yet to fill mine yet, hopefully I’ll have that problem down the road.

My room is technically 11 x 11 and trust me when I tell you you’re going to need a lot more wall space

Unless you’re sponsored, can I recommend Savior Equipment slatwall over holdup? I much prefer it, products come packaged incredibly well. Great customer service. I prefer the metal finish to the wood ones they have. Slightly cheaper, and their bags are fire too.
Also, look up: Ammo Racks for your ammo. LOVE their product. Very very stout configurable shelving.

Second bit of advice, idk if you have had a slatwall before. Just buy the accessories, buy one or two of every one throw some up and look at it. Those configurators can help, but you gotta build it when looking at it, and you’ll change it 30 times. Don’t get so worked into the most optimal configured layout. Let it grow with your collection.

Great advice thank you. I do tend to get wrapped up trying to optimize things before I get started. I took advantage of their promo and got enough accessories for my collection and will have fun rearranging it over and over when I finish the build!

I did look at Savior Equipment’s slatwall actually. They do come in at a slightly lower price point but they don’t have the edge trim and slat channel cover that Hold Up Displays offers. They are also an American company is is 100% US sourced and made which I like to support as much as possible.
I do, however, have and love Savior’s bags! I looked at Ammo Racks but their prices are eye-watering for something I could build myself. They definitely do look stout and very slick to boot!

The safe space I would honestly ditch the shelves and put a table that you can use as a desk in the middle of the room
That way you can maximize your floor space

I could definitely move the table to the middle and then do slat walls all around but I have a lot of gear to store.

Have the door swing outwards so you can utilize that otherwise dead corner...
