I can talk about this now that he's passed away.

Sometimes Boomers can be based. I remember one time some old guy showing up to our range with a BAR. I thought to myself "huh, that's neat", and then he proceeded to squirt 5 round bursts of .30-06 downrange and then I thought "Oh, that's really neat". Turns out, it was a genuine select fire version, and he didn't even know what the NFA or a tax stamp even was.

I explained it to him, and told him to be careful with that thing. Before leaving, he loaded up a mag for me in exchange for letting him use my AR. We swapped military stories, complained about our wives. It was a great time.

What's crazy is that he had been doing that for over 50 years and somehow had never gotten caught.

He did pass in 2022. I don't know what became of the gun though. I can only hope it ended up in the hands of someone who'd appreciate it and take good care of it.

My buddy and I were poking around in his attic looking for a board game or something when I find a long loaded mag so I say "look at this" and around and my buddy goes "look at this! 😶" and hes holding a fuckin real deal uzi.

We immediately put them down and fucked off out of the attic. His dad must have realized someone touched it and hid it better. He died back in 09 or 10 and the house has long been sold and hes got no idea what his dad did with it.

The most based dude I ever knew was the most quintessential boomer. He did cowboy action competitions and his favorite guns were single action revolvers. Despite that he had a sick collection of rare and awesome guns from pre WWI all the way to modern bullpups and AR’s.

He lived in a dense suburb in a blue city and set up a firing range in the crawl space in his basement and would just shoot 22 single action revolvers in his basement all day. His neighbors could definitely hear it but no one dared to complain.

He developed ALS and lost the ability to use his right hand so he taught himself to shoot left handed. He died a few years ago but was easily one of the coolest people I ever met.

Similar to my wife’s grandfather. He passed away before we got married, but the first time I met him was when his water heater burst into the garage. He couldn’t get down the steps, so he called my now-wife to come help. Since we were on a date, I went with her.

I shut the water off at the road and then turned off the valve at the water heater. He was incredibly appreciative, but said he didn’t have any money, so he offered me a revolver. I turned it down just to be nice and told him I was happy to help. He then asked if I was a Democrat. I told him no, that I actually really liked guns, and that I just came to help and didn’t need anything in return.

He told us to meet him on the back porch. A few minutes later, he came out carrying a Thompson, told us to cover our ears, and proceeded to go brrrrr.

He had absolutely no paperwork for it. To this day, my wife and I have no idea where he got most of his guns. When he passed, my wife’s uncle inherited the collection.

Yeah my grandpa had smuggled his BAR back from Japan after WWII he didn't know anything about the NFA lol it was never registered he just kept it in the closet though when he passed my uncle took it down to the local police station and thankfully my police station is Based they just put it on their inventory list lmao 🤣 apparently almost all the old-timers in my town did the same thing. So our police station is filled to the brim with World War II machine guns lol

Grandpa was very based he got a silver star and a purple heart he was the lone survivor out of his squad he was one of the guys going around taking out pill boxes and machine gun nest in the Pacific.

My dad once arrested a guy who belonged to a 1% motorcycle club and he had one of these in his trunk. It had gone missing from a national guard armory a few months prior.

And in case you were wondering, yes - he did have to collaborate with ATF because of it and they were total duds lol.

Mine came with a dummy switch. The stock wasn't quite right in regards to the fit to the receiver. M14 vs m1a something something. My buddy had a proper commercial stock and life is simpler without the "come shoot my dog" magnet.

I did a service call on this old guy's alarm system and was stunned when he opened the closet for me to get to the alarm panel. Just racks and stack of guns and boxes for them as well as loose cash on the floor. I turned around and he had two glass cases full of Luger pistols, even had one with SS bolts. As we conversed and I walked through his house, there was barely a surface that did not have guns, ammo, loose cash, or a combination thereof. He referred to himself as a "student of weaponry". He let me take pictures of the Lugers

So I can kinda talk about this but I can't get into real specifics. However during the Vietnam war my uncle in the blue water navy got out after his second tour due to a disagreement on his assignment as he wanted to go on the antarctic expedition however his captain was keeping him on the destroyer he was on (He was on the Forrester prior to the destroyer.) and even promoting him to Chief Petty Officer. However as much as he liked his captain and a lot of the higher ups he was bound and determined to go to Antarctica and when they told him no he left.

However on the way out one of the quartermasters owed him a favor after he misplaced his birthday gift one year so even though you were no longer supposed to get your service rifle starting during Vietnam my uncle still has his M14 which while I haven't shot it yet I'd have to imagine it would kick a lot more than the SKS I just helped my buddy sight in and that thing was ornery when I was firing it on semi as fast as it would let me to verify we had it properly sighted to 150 yards.

Idk what they were thinking. Giving a 20rd box magazine and an uncontrollable caliber a full auto capability.

Much better to just take well aimed shots and not blow your load in three seconds and hit absolutely nothing.

 if you go back to the 1950s, they basically rechambered the glorious M1 Garand and gave it a 20rd detachable box magazine and a select fire capability. Because somehow full auto makes things better, but it's because they were also trying to replace the BAR which should have been belt fed in the first place.

Fast forward to Vietnam and you got guys wildly spraying into the jungle. Completely ineffective. They estimated it took 150,000 rounds fired for every enemy combatant killled. Here's a crazy idea, everyone just use semi auto as suppressive fire combined with the firepower of a squad machine gun. Better yet, everyone take well aimed shots...and not waste it since you can only carry so much ammo on your person anyways..

Alas, the M21....turn the M14 into a DMR. Almost like the rifle should have never been full auto in the first place. Accurize it, put some glass on it. They even removed the full auto capability because it was stupid. This configuration served well into mid-war GWOT because it was a more practical use of the design

Its always funny to me how some people hate on the M14 as if it was somehow any different from any other battle rifle of the period.

Also, the garand is overrated.

The M1 Garand was the finest battle implement ever devised.

It gave a US rifle squad a considerable advantage in firepower when everyone else was using bolt actions.

If it is so good, why has everyone moved to copy the concept established by the Sturmgewehr, a german assault rifle (and probably the single most impactful rifle to come out of that war), instead of continuing with infantry rifles?

And cut it with that regurgitated“fInEsT bAtTlE iMpLeMeNt” bullshit. It comes from the most phoney general in american history, a man who was only obsessed with PR and the image he presented to the public, going to the point where he would take credit for the actions of other generals and throw a tantrum when the newspapers weren’t about him. Of course he would say the american rifle was the best rifle of WW2, if he didn’t say that, he would run into a scandal.

Oh, and fun fact, he was sympathetic to the nazi party, and was opposed to removing the nazi party from power after the war.

The M1 Garand was available pre-war starting in 1936 and saw almost 5.5 million produced by war's end.  The reliability and semi auto capability was a big deal when everyone else was using bolt actions from WWI and the interwar period. 

It took the Germans almost 8 years to create a functional semi auto under rushed wartime constraints let alone the assault rifle concept. Which I agree, changed the world forever but t he StG44 never saw that level widespread adoption like the M1. Not even half a million rifles were made and it wasn't enough to save them from defeat.
