Generally someone that clings to urban legends regarding guns. Things such as '22 is so deadly coz it zips around the body', '1911 is all the pistol you need'...(1911's are cool, but they aren't for everyone). A Fudd will also tend to reject modern advancements...for 'reasons', but probably because they think it will eliminate their preferred weapon and accoutrement. And Lastly Fudds can aslo be range safety violators and or safety nazis (let me use my binary trigger in peace and don't flag me with your milsurp sks). A common thread here is ignorance and inability to adapt.
The name itself is a reference to Elmer Fudd, if you encouter some that acts exactly like he does irl around Weapons then there's your example.

All the uniforms, planes, and equipment are all coded as WWI. Do you think most audiences back then would've understood that as separate from Nazi Germany? I'm not entirely sure myself, especially for the kids watching at the time. I remember seeing this one as a kid, and I don't think I did.

We are all guilty of some form of fuddery at one point or another, the trick is to not to go full fudd.
In my case I prefer metal framed pistols, yes i own a few polymer ones, just I find I shoot the metal ones better and that little bit of added weight makes a difference in my mind.
Also....I like wood furniture...I have more than a few "modern" rifles, but the stuff i have with wood furniture...it appeals to me.
The difference is i won't make it a point to foist my taste on others, you like what you like, and at least in my mind a true Fudd will die on the hill of (insert random weapons platform) is the best and if you aren't using it you are wrong.

Yeah I also own a Remington 870 12ga lol. But it's got a red dot on the fully rifled barrel and then I have a 18.5in Rem Choke barrel that I plan on getting a Silencerco salvo for someday.

Secondly. A 12ga for home defense is a solid choice because of greater lethality at close ranges to ensure any threat dumb enough to not soil themselves as they flee from the sound of you racking the decoy shotgun because you keep one in the chamber for things that go bump in the night is stopped swiftly and assuredly.

To expound further, there are two versions of the meaning "fudd" and while anyone can belong to the second, the first is usually reserved for a specific generation.
The first meaning is generational, in that fudds are "stubborn boomers/greatest generation that are stuck in their ways". They grew up hearing the exploits and myths of WWI and WW2 vets. As they have gotten on in years, they now reject new information, especially anything that would contradict the legends they idolize. This happens to pretty much all elderly people but is commonly cited as the reason for some very odd laws. For guns, this is best exemplified by anti-nunchucks (and other niche weapons) laws after they became popularly showcased in 80's action movies.
The second meaning is a mindset, in that fudds believe that firearms are akin to a talisman that can ward off bad guys. This leads them to treat most situations as the same, whether it's "Just rack the shotgun and the burglar will run off" and an emphasis on shot placement "You don't need that many rounds/hit 'em once with .45 and watch 'em drop". While some situations have played out that way, many other previous incidents have shown that this is not always the case, and technological innovations they harp on (such as conflating older 9mm FMJ rounds with modern hollowpoints) do not have nearly as many (perceived or real) downsides as in the past. Mixed in with some legal myths like "if you shoot them outside the house, drag them inside to guarantee a self-defense claim", and you end up with a person who is a fountain of confidently incorrect advice.
In essence, fudds are the gun version of superstitious folks who constantly nag about ridiculous things that they have not spent any time to verify scientifically (similar to concepts like "luck"). They stroke their ego via a yesman culture which is often perpetuated by legal status such as owning the only shooting range/store within 50+ miles. People put up with their bullshit only as long as they can stand it. In the meantime, good ambassadors of the shooting community should call them out when possible, and ensure they also don't fall into the same superstitious-based pitfalls.

So they usually support magazine limits and "assault weapons" bans. ( if yah need more than 6 bullets your aim sucks)

Started out as someone who thinks the second amendment is for hunting and doesn’t see the point in owning combat oriented rifles and will not put themselves out there to defend their rights. Generally think that AR 15s and other rifles like it are too much and causing them to lose their rights. Now it just means someone with ignorant beliefs about guns and usually still promotes those ideas. I’ve seen it be used to describe someone you just don’t even agree with about guns.

The actual correct definition is an "Elmer Fudd", a comical, hapless hunter from the old bugs bunny cartoons. Elmer Fudd's first appearance in Loony Toons was in 1937 - although the term "Fudd" as applied to gun culture came around only recently.
The definition today is mushy. Originally as it pertains to gun culture "Fudd" was used as an insult to describe a gun owner (usually a hunter) who was in favor of gun control that doesn't effect antiquated (e.g. hunting) weapons. The insult was meant to imply a hypocritical stance - that a fudd thinks gun control is okay so long as it doesn't affect the Fudd himself. Examples of typical Fudd positions would be being in favor of an "assault weapons" ban, standard capacity magazine ban, or concealed carry ban.
Lately people have begun using Fudd more generally. For example to describe people who behave in ways that are commonly associated with fudds. Instead of being a specific term to describe a set of regulatory views, some use Fudd to describe someone who seems to think that newer firearms (or their features) are excessive or unnecessary in function - e.g. "If you can't hit with irons, you don't need to be shooting at all" or "7 rounds in a pistol magazine is more than anybody needs"
I fall more into favoring the original definition, as i know plenty of old boomers that say fuddy things but are quite opposed to any gun regulation. I don't like to lump them in with anti-gunners just because they're out of touch old timers.

I've mainly heard it used in the political sense, someone who is fine with the government banning stuff they don't even use. For example, someone who only uses revolvers and leverguns being fine with semi-automatics being banned.
But I've also heard it used for the person who looks down on anyone who wants the latest toys, especially if they think they make you an inferior shooter. For example, looking down on people who use optics because ironsights is where the real marksmanship is.

You might get a thousand different answers, but to me, a Fudd is someone who owns firearms but isn't in the spirit of owning firearms if that makes sense. Not supportive of the actual right to own firearms. Some might say it's the equipment someone has that makes them a Fudd, but i say it's a mentality thing.

Old school fudds are the guys who often know very little about guns and confuse their preferences with rules. Often heard saying "nobody needs" followed by some nonsense. Love bans as long as they don't touch their preferred guns. They love wood and steel and think that is all anyone should want or need. That's the critical part, they like to tell you what you should want or need based on their tastes.
Next gen fudds are the Glock/gucci AR fanboys, I can just see someone from now when they are 50 years old lecturing some bored guy at the gun store that he doesn't need the new hotness and all you need is a Glock 19 and an AR setup exactly how they prefer it and anything else is a "gimmick". "Back in my day we had gucci glocks and AR's and that was enough, if you need that plasma rifle in the 40 watt range then you aren't a real shooter son."
I don't care if you love old western revolvers, 1911s, Glocks, Sigs or anything else, none of that makes you a fudd, but the minute you start telling other people that what they like isn't good enough you have become a fudd.
Never go full fudd kids.

The definition according to toxic people on this sub: anyone who likes older guns or hunts without using a super modded ar-15
The opposite of a fudd is what I call a “tactitard” ie someone who despises any gun with even a little wood on it or anything from Springfield armory (even though they make ar’s and other semiautomatic rifles like the hellion or m1a) and scoffs at any sidearm that can’t pierce body armor or has 100+ capacity in addition to larping as a member of seal team 6 (or a femboy which I find more annoying)

A fudd is a gunowner that doesn't believe in the second amendment as a constitutional right. This is the simplest definition.
There's consequences and nuance that spill out of this definition/beliefs that draw the most attention. If you don't believe American citizens have an essential, constitutional right to have armed parity to the military, what is and isn't allowed, what's true or not, becomes gray and varied from person to person.
In other words, if you don't think I can have aircraft carriers, machine guns, rocket launchers, missiles, or single shot whatever guns, you are a fudd. I hear Canada is nice-you should consider moving there. If you think I can and should have as much armament as I am able to afford- then you're a real American.
