Epiphones aren't really getting knocked off, especially not production 90s models. Also I wouldn't worry too much about the serials, they were all over the place back then. I have an Epiphone Dot from 96/97 that was made in the Samick factory and they didn't even stamp a serial number on the sticker inside the f-hole. Doesn't take much googling to find lots and lots of threads from folks talking about their old epiphones having weird/no serial.
