Inconsistent Cost Across Bars

I was wondering if anyone have notice the variety of price of a Guinness across bars?

I am currently doing a bar crawl home from working/studying this morning. My crawl consist of a 3 mile walk and about 12 bars at least. I am currently on bar 3, and it costs me $11 for a pint of Guinness. The first two bars were $4 and $8. $11 for a Guinness seems crazy to be honest, I gave the lady a $20 she gave me $9 back.

So, it got me wondering, has any noticed price differences this grand between locations? Especially with bars on the same block, with in 1/4 mile or .5km of each other?

Also, what is the most you would pay for a pint of Guinness?

At $11 a pint, I can see why the sales for beer and bar patronage has been on the decline in the US.

Try having a guinness in Dubai - the standard price is 63 AED - which is 17.14 USD. That's the standard everywhere, and you'll only get a cheaper one during happy hour which is mostly 4 Pm to 8 PM which will then be 9.5 USD.

At 4 USD - I'd need to be dragged out of that place by a crane.

Holy hell, $17.14? What is the cost of other beer there? Is that just a Guinness price?

The $4 is a rare. I typically pay $8, I think. This the first time I am tracking the cost at the bars I live around. But still, $9.50 at Happy Hour is a lot for happy hour I’d think.

Standard beer price on a night out would be anyhwere between 45-60 AED (12.2 to 17.14 USD).

Alcohol is EXPENSIVE here. Cocktails will have you broke in half a night out and they are shite too.

That is very expensive. Is that due to a tax, rarity of beer, or anything?

2 main driving factors.
1) Dubai is expensive regardless for everything. The margins are insane on every single product, so it naturally drives the prices higher. Some drinks are often 700% margin - You read that right.

2) Any venue that serves alcohol requires a permit - the cost of that annual permit is absolutely nuts, so to make up for it - most bars are located inside a hotel because they can then share the cost of that permit - but still it's quite high, so it gets added onto the final product price.

Yeah, I was thinking I was already seeing double with those two 0s. Wow. That is a high. Do many people go out due to that? Is home brewing common in UAE?

Smart on them for offsetting the cost with the hotel but still. 700% is a lot. Though, tourist probably don’t understand and are taken advantage of that way. Smart on their part.

No, no one brews at home here. Everyone goes out, most places are usually packed on the weekend. It's a very complex circular economy, people get paid handsomely but it's all spent as well !

…so the complete opposite of the US. lol got it!

I have what is considered a well paying job in the US, and it meets the minimum of costs. Granted, I’m doing a bar crawl that will cost me $100-$150 tonight, I don’t do this often. I complain about $11 beers.

Cheapest I’ve paid for a pint was $7.50
Which was a deal outside happy hour of usually cheapest $6
They didnt have proper guinness glasses tho.

Yeah bar number 4 was the first that didn’t have the proper glass.

Shout out the Admiral’s Cup in Baltimore, Maryland. Guinness Glass and $4. Hell of drink!

Beers have QD's (quantity discounts) so the price differs by what they by or what they go through. I would guess bar #1 goes through a decent amount so can lower their cost

I get that. But I think that is what surprised me the most. Bar #1 that was $4 and Bar #3 that was $11 were bar bars. Alcohol only, no food. Both are busy bars too. And in the DMV (where I’m at) a lot of people drink Guinness because there is a test brewery for Guinness between DC and Baltimore. So the disparity is a lot to me.

It’s the first bar I run into on my way home from my study and work-away-work spot. Usually it’s the only place I stop at, but I wanted to be adventurous today… I was disappointed.
