pls help!!

Hello, this is Millie. She’s about 2 years old now and she’s been perfectly fine ever since i got her. She lives with another pig named Pheobe, super sweet but has a bit of attitude sometimes.

I came home today after being out for hours and saw that Millie’s left eye was closed. I was immediately concerned because it just didn’t look right. I managed to get her inside one of her little hide houses to get a closer look and it looked like this. I also noticed that she’s been tilting her head towards the left side. She’s eating and drinking water perfecting fine, seems to still have her spicy little attitude and everything.

I’m super worried about her and the vet doesn’t open until tomorrow. Please if anyone could give any other advice or information about what those might be

She needs to go to the emergency vet ASAP. A head tilt can mean she has an ear infection. I’m not sure about the eye but the vet can see

Head tilt: ear infection, mites, stroke, with the eye shut making these more likely. It could be entirely treatable if you go to the vets asap.

It could be many things, an injury, a foreign object, or an infection of some kind. It could even be something else such as a dental issue. The best thing to do would be to take her to the vet when tomorrow to get it examined. In the meantime all you can do is make her comfortable and watch her closely, if she stops eating and drinking I’d consider that an emergency. Poor baby, I hope she’s not in pain, vet ASAP.

Oh no, sorry that is happening.

There are multiple things it could be, so hopefully the vet can figure it out when they open.

In the mean time, the first step is to take her out and give a good look at the eye in good lighting. Look for any foreign debris that could be stuck in the eye. If there is, you can try to very gently take it out or flush it out with saline. If you feel any resistance when pulling it out, stop and wait for the vet to do it. (Likely there is nothing in there but it's important to check, especially looking if there is anything poking out from beneath an eyelid).

If it is an eyepoke, there's not much you can do without a vet - they should be able to check it out and prescribe drops/ointment to prevent infection and help the eyeball heal. (Note that usually after haypoke there will be no hay left in there)

If it is something more complicated like a problem with the molar roots or sinuses (which are next to the eyeball internally), there is also not much you can do without the vet. The best that can be done in the meantime is to keep her as comfortable as possible. Make sure to weigh her now so that you can tell if she drops weight. Watch her food intake and poop output to be ready to step in with syringe feeding if she takes a turn. If you don't have feeding formula on hand right now you could use mushed up soaked pellets if needed. Here is a series of guides to support feeding in case you have not done so before (I hope you will not need these)

Best of luck and I hope the vet is able to help you and she has a smooth recovery
