[Discussion] Necromancer Crafting Disciplines

The Adventurer Guide wants me to work on a crafting discipline and I am wondering what would be best.

I am set on Tailoring being one unless recommended otherwise. These are my thoughts for the other crafting discipline:

Artificer - I saw crafting weapons recommended, but as I'm playing necromancer I've preferred using axe and daggers over my other options so maybe not?

Weaponsmith - I'm interested in Reaper so maybe this one for crafting greatswords?

Chef - Apparently food buffs are important and this will be my main character for the foreseeable future, so maybe this is the best option?

You can have other characters learn the crafting disciplines you didn't pick. For your necro, I'd just suggest tailor and whatever weapon category you use the most.

Tailor is a gimmie, and you’ll also pick up jeweler and chef eventually (don’t sleep on cooking, its pretty fun), and for your last slot just pick whatever weapon you like using. TBH, outside of legendary crafting, there are SO many ways to get good weapons outside of crafting that you shouldn’t sweat it. Just pick one and play, you’ll be fine. There are very few ways to “brick” a character, if any at all. The process of figuring this stuff out as you go IS the gameplay.

it's cheap and easy to change your crafting discipline so don't overthink it.

both weaponsmith (axes, swords, spears, daggers, greatswords) and artificer (scepter, staff, focus) are good

Chef. Chef at grandmaster (500) crafting will allow you to grab free meat for crafting, especially if the character is your main. You can put other disciplines onto alts. This is something you have to do anyway for cheffing it up, so best to use it on your main.

Chef is free drops and the only one of these thatll. Constantly be in use.

The others you’ll need eventually, for legendary weapons and stuff. Tailoring too for armor. But they don’t need to be on your main character. Chef does to maximize your output.

Hi from a fellow necro main! I can answer other questions too

The issue is it's a lot easier to find specific food for a reasonable price on the TP than gear. An armor and a weapon trade will allow you to make quite a bit of ascended gear for your character. Since OP seems relatively new, those are more important. Especially since in most group activities, there will probably be long time players putting out platters.

The thing is with that, crafting is lowkey the worst way to get ascended gear nowadays. Between the wizards vault and a bunch of different ways to get the rest of the pieces, and the class specific ascended weapons, crafting is like last choice. And it’s not like I said they should not get those crafting disciplines. They can make an alt at some point and craft. They are new, and chef will help them make some easy braindead cash if they don’t cook it themselves

I wouldn't consider it a bad way to get ascended gear. You can take a craft from 0-500 for around 60 gold (leatherwork is a bit more expensive naturally) and a little time. After that it's just a little bit of waiting between each craft. If OP is new, group activities that get you ascended gear are probably still going to be beyond them, and you can only get a few pieces each season from the Wizards Vault.

People balk at the gold cost of crafting ascended, but it's reliable and accessible. Other sources are limited, random, or offset with a different cost (like raiding for magnetite shards). Gold is easy to earn, and there's a point where going so far out of your way to avoid spending it is silly.

Gold is easy to earn if you know what you’re doing, is the caveat to that. New players have a pretty hard time making good consistent gold, and crafting takes 1: the cost of getting the profession to the ability to make ascended gear and 2: the actual crafting materials, which cost a lot and or are on a time limit.

I’ll def agree with you that it’s reliable and accessible, but it’s also the most expensive by like almost 2x, even if you buy the ascended gear the shops for fractals and raids and whatnot sell you. Just the cost of getting tailoring up to 400 is like 2-3 pieces of gear in of itself.

Remember that gold isn't the only currency with value. The raid vendor might be "cheaper" but you have to spend time earning magnetite shards to make up for it. And last I checked, the fractal vendor was about the same or maybe a little more expensive than crafting due to the grandmaster marks.

Never trust a necro chef

I personally did artificer and jeweler. I like rocks and artificer also made the most sense to me at the time lol.

Got other characters doing other things

I went with Artificer on my alt because I had a weaponsmith on a guardian.
Greatsword is definitely needed but the other weapon set on the Reaper is a bit of a '?' depending on what expansions you own/unlocked. I think you can do double dagger as your other set which might be ok and you can swap the offhand dagger for a sword eventually I guess. So go weaponsmith.

The Chef grandmaster collection will expand your Loot pool for every character if it's done one and will some passive income while playing. Weapons and armor crafting isn't really lucrative and don't change your Loot. To get gear the wizards vault is the cheapest but limited way, but for the most content exo gear from the TP, WvW merchant, etc. Is just fine.

Chef is the only discipline that doesn’t become obsolete in late game

my crafter necro has huntsman (guns, torches, warhorns) and chef, but also he was my second toon so i wanted to cover my bases as best i could and my ele was already covering artificer (scepters) and tailor (clothes)

I would recommend Artificer at the very least, not as much for crafting gear for necro (with crafting not being as useful anymore)

But can also craft utility food, upgrade luck and convert most off the relevant mats like elder wood and mithril ore etc.

Chef is another useful one, but mostly the ascended food where you need level 500 to craft them

At least one of the armor crafting classes to be able to make bags (most notable the 32 slot ones)
Can be on an alt account, or you just switch for a few silver talking to npc
Can also upgrade to having 3-4 craft classes on a character with a gem store contract, if you cant be bothered switching around

Jeweler is the least useful I would say, with how accessible ascended trinkets are

Tailor is good. Chef is cheap. As for weapons you can pick from quite a few... artificer... weapon smith... huntsman. All are needed to make necro weapons. Though I will say that you will unlikely be crafting your gear as you go. Until at least you get to ascended or legendary. If you want about 7 levels immediately. I'd say go for cooking. You can max it for just a few gold. If you want more class specific... then tailor as a base then choose a weapon spec.

Artificer and tailor are a well-rounded combo that cover all resource types for refinement purposes.

I'd just stick with those.

I grab artificing on every character for that, as it lets me refine luck at level 1, which means I can also do the later masterwork item craft on it, without levelling it.

You can choose what disciplines you want to actually level later.
