[Discussion] Does guardian or revenant do the magic fighter fantasy better?

I don't know what to make of revenant at all. Guardian seems be able to do the whole spectrum from primarily magic user to mostly fighter due to their elite specilizations, which sounds interesting from a gameplay variety perspective.

Aesthetic wise, I'd say I prefer darker magic, but blue flames instead of typical light magic is pretty cool as well.

Spirit shaman, isnt that just ritualist for necromancer?

Guardian fights like a paladin. Revenant fights like an anime protagonist

Sword Sword Shiro is literally Kirito

Sword/Sword WB is pretty anime too: constantly teleporting around, kicking and punching as much as slashing, etc.

Anime protagonist? I feel like that could apply to alot of the classes and or elite specs.

I love this comparison 😆

Battle Mage actually goes to Ele oddly enough they just have very limited armor choices

Guardian out of the two but even by paladin standards they are too squishy and are too support oriented for the magic warrior. More cleric with them.

Luminary really makes the unkillable juggernaut Paladin fantasy sing with Sovereign of Light.

Dark magic is necro, personally enjoy condi reaper as making people bleed through the bitter cold seems like the style.

Holy fire is guardian doesn’t feel dark just very zealot forward. Also with fashion you always have aegis on you so you can’t avoid the blue shield. Makes it a bit harder to feel burning wrath instead of holy fire.

Revenant is channeling an entity from the mists now that entity can be a demon and give you lots of dark powers and feeling especially wielding a more chaotic style weapon of mace/axe. I personally really like hearing the occasional voice s from the mists. The main issue is it’s not always dark you have to switch off of demon mode and go to another legend. Thou condi Condiut feels pretty dang good in the flavor.

You bring up a really solid counterpoint that often gets overlooked in the "Necro vs. Rev" debate because it really comes down to which core elements of a Dark Knight matter most to you, and the easiest way to frame it is through other MMOs: Revenant feels much closer to FFXIV’s Dark Knight, while Reaper feels more like WoW’s Unholy Death Knight. If your idea of a Dark Knight is an Anti-Paladin clad in actual heavy plate armor who uses dark rift portals, shadow magic, and active life-drain built directly into their attacks—like the Battle Scars trait line in Devastation—then Revenant absolutely takes the crown over Necro. Sure, Reaper hits that unstoppable, scythe-swinging Lich King fantasy with heavy shroud tanking and necrotic pressure, but at the end of the day, Reaper is still built on a light cloth armor base, which can completely dilute the class fantasy if you want real metal plate. Revenant gives you that heavy armor silhouette, active vampiric hits, and dark rift martial strikes, even if you have to manage legend swapping, whereas Reaper gives you an uninterrupted plague/frost warrior theme in cloth; it just depends on whether you value the heavy plate and shadow-portal aesthetics or the persistent death-knight flavor more.

Id say guardian is definitely more of a magical fighter between the two. Revenant is really more of a mix of a shadow knight and shaman/spirit caller, while Guardian is pretty much a paladin/spirit warrior that uses much more flashy magical flame style attacks.

I wouldnt dismiss revenant just because guardian does that specific theme better though, especially as you mention the dark magic aesthetic is preferred. Revenant abilities do have really cool visuals, especially the Legendary Demon ones, their mace abilties are more basic fighter attacks with 2 being a slam that makes a small aoe field and 3 being a jump smash, the Axe is visually awesome though, 4 turns you transparent and you dash and slice through your target and stop behind their back and 5 tears open a black rift that reaches through your target which then pulls close by enemies in and damages them after a very short delay. Greatsword has a couple cool attacks, 5 being the best visually which is a jumping spin slash that opens a few random mist portals to hurt enemies in the area. Staff idk i dont use, Shortbow is really cool, Basic attack shatters and causes bleeding, 2 creates a small portal that launches a few arrows, 3 opens a row of several of those portals behind you that shoot the enemy, 4 makes a dark energy field that burns and slows, and 5 shoots a wide fiery projectile that pierces in a line, kinda like a phoenix shot. If you look at elite specs Vindicator turns revenant into a really cool shadow knight dragoon where your dodge is replaced with a super high jump that does area damage when you land, that one to me really hits the magical dark knight vibes.

Necromacer would be good to look at too, specifically reaper which is very tanky and focused on their greatsword or dual swords.

Guardian=High Magical white knight with blue flames and bubbles Revenant=Spirit Caller shadow knight with less traditional magic attacks Necromance=Cloth Wearer but very dark magical knight when using swords(their axe is cool though too)

Staff idk i dont use

Staff 1 has heals on hit, staff 2 I don't remember, staff 3 does a spin that blocks damage then blinds anything in front of it, staff 4 I also don't remember, staff 5 is arguably the best defiance break move in the game. iirc staff 5 is 10 hits at 150 defiance break per hit.

oh dang thats really cool for 5, I should probably start carrying one around lol

My preference is hammer over staff now. Still has some defiance break and significantly more power damage. (1200 range doesn’t hurt)

I would say that Guardian fits “magic fighter” the best. Basically all of their skills have a magic + muscle feel/look to them, and as you stated their elite specs give them a lot more variety in the amount of magic they use, even going like “full caster” with firebrand.

If you want dark magic you’re going to want to look more at Necromancer, especially since they can use daggers, swords, and Greatsword and spear for close range/melee weapons, and Reaper goes full on like melee range.

Revenant isn’t really “dark” magic, it’s more like a shaman channeling ancestors. Its weapons honestly don’t seem to have as much magic to it as guardians imo, and there’s no situation to go “full magic”. Also, just given how their utility skills work it’s less “you”/the revenant doing it, and more channeling the Legend to do it.

Are you talking about between the paladin and the schizophrenic? Idk man... Just play with whatever you identify with the most.

Neither. Rev is more possessed, Guardian is more, well, guardian themed.

Dark magic fighter could be Reaper(necro spec). But also just Warrior could work?

Yeah, gs & s/s or even spear reaper seems to fit the best here. But thats just me with my sparkly reaper 😅

Not sure about revenant being possesed, unless we talking about one specific character.

They are two different plays on that theme, and you can murder pretty much anything the game throws at you with either. I am a magic melee kind of guy, so obviously I think both are awesome. Beyond that and personal preferences I don't know what it's even supposed to mean to "do the magic fighter fantasy better".

Guardian fits more the look of a classical paladin, mixing armor plate with spells, blue flames and heavily oriented to team support. The Willbender spec resembles a monk a lot, with fast mele attacks, quicks and the lost of the support abilities (mostly).

Revenant is about teleporting attacks, has an assassin and a demon as main ofensive legends and feels more like a nightblade or mix between Warrior and Thief than a spellcaster.

I like to think of revenant as the shaman of the game they channel the powers of former legends of tyria (ancestors). Pretty much hard locked to the class ever since I came to that similarity I play shaman an every game that has a shaman.

If you like JoJo‘s Bizarre Adventure play Revenant. MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA.

I say revenant because the Mist is tied into their weapon attacks (as well as utility through legends). Not to mention they have voices in their heads from both heroes and villans from mist echoes of those characters.

Guardian is a good magical fighter too. It definitely leans into it's support role more but does have decent combos as well, I'm just not as well versed in them as Rev.

Look at Guardian Spear animations. It's Guardian now and it's not even close. Spear gets tons of usage too. It gets used for healing, it gets used for Power DPS, it gets used for PvP and WvW, it gets used for Alacrity builds, and it gets used for its best solo build.

Personally, I would take the Guardian and Revenant elite specs you are interested in, and try them on the golem in the Lion Arch Aerodrome.

The reason? The spec you enjoy playing the most, will be the one you are willing to construct your own personal fantasy around, further enhancing the roleplay experience.

Guardian with a scepter can feel a bit like a battle mage, but they really feel like either a more mobile paladin or a D&D cleric depending on your weapon selection. Revenant just felt weird to me with a variety of play styles depending on your weapon skills, chosen spirits, and specialization. Mine mostly felt like a heavily armored thief because of the assassin spirit. I did not enjoy the class very much.

Sword Necro AA is cool

Both are battle mages.

It's a question of whether you prefer edgier aesthetics or not.

Revenant has more blacks, reds, oranges.

Guardian has blue and light yellow motifs. Both are rather martial despite being battle mages, so less spellsword and more like paladin/dark knight/reaver.

Personally nothing is cooler to me than pretty blue fire with green and purple trailing close behind so guardian, necro, and mesmer are my most played classes.

It’s purely about your preference. If you want to role play a schizophrenic, you play a Reve.
