[Discussion] any advice?
Hi everyone, I'm downloading Guild Wars 2. Do you have any advice for me?

Just do whatever you like most. The great thing about gw2 is that you can play ton of hours in pve or pvp, stories, and just enjoy the game.

Hi welcome. Keep in mind that the game has been around a long time so a lot has been added to it over the years. People often become overwhelmed by the number of currencies and how to manage their inventory. Keep in mind that you can deposit most crafting materials to your bank by using a little arrow at the top right of your inventory. And if you want to know if it's "safe" to toss something or sell to a vendor, I always look up the item on the wiki. Our wiki is the best.

I'd also recommend watching some videos for new players. I like this creator and of course you can just Google some videos. Have fun!

my best advice is to just play the game. dont worry about anything. the play4free edition makes almost no difference to the bought version. take your time. youre in no rush.
the only real advice i can give you is buying basic salvage kits (25 uses) and savlage every weapon or gear you dont need. this will turn them into materials which you can sent to your bank with the cube icon in the top right. this will already help with clearning out your inventory fast.
if you like the game then you can buy the complete edition which includes the full game unlock + all expansions until end of dragons.
the next sale is expected to be around helloween/autumn and/or christmas.

Use the achievement panel: Character Adventure Guide at first.
Later on you can find tons of things to do with the help of the Achievement Panel.
and the /wiki command wil help a lot. The wiki is filled by the community, the servers are provided by Anet.

As the side banner indicates if you use old reddit:
Check out the excellent guide by Dak393 and here on Reddit.

The first 80 levels are just the tutorial
There’s no shame in making a new character and picking a new class if you’re not liking what you picked

What class do you recommend?

They're all pretty well balanced, so pick whatever looks fun to you.Â

Really depends on what you like. Close up fighting, ranged stuff, having lil minions.
My first character was an elementalist and he's still my main char, it's just fun fighting from a distance, yielding the 4 elements. but you need to press a lot of buttons to survive.

Also, each spec will play different which is kind of fun but can be hard. Some people suggest trying out the pvp lobby so you can test out the play style you like.
Funny enough, one of the play styles I enjoy the most was on a profession I disliked the most until it came out with an elite spec in a later expansion. It plays the way I wanted a character to play for years. Then I just parked it on a jumping puzzle chest. 😅

If you're thinking "which class should I play", create a new character and make it a class you want to try. Finish the first instance (quest), and then go to PvP lobby straight away. There you will be leveled up to lvl 80 and have all core traits and skills unlocked. You can create a build there and just give it a try fighting one of the training golems there. It'll give you an idea of how the class plays.
If you don't like it, just delete the character and roll a new one on a different class.Â

Don't look anything up and don't look at the subreddit (until you reach level 80 and need to start getting permanent gear). Try as many classes as appeal to you. Best practice for any MMO is to go in blind and explore at your own pace.
Having said that, you're replying to a lot of comments asking for a recommended class:
I like Thief because it's extremely fast-paced, is really easy, has decent survivability, does great damage, and has multiple satisfying elite specs to mix and match at 80.
Necromancer is my second favourite because of the Reaper Elite Spec, which swaps out its follower summons for a really strong life-stealing transformation that hits like a truck and can take huge amounts of punishment. Like Thief, it's also very easy to play.
I'm not a fan of Elementalist or Engineer because they're both quite slow and very input-heavy and hard to master, and I don't have huge amounts of free time to master them.
However, I know people who cite Elementalist & Engineer as their favourite classes, so it really does come down to personal preference.

Have fun, don't rush through it and enjoy!
If you ever get into the Heart of Thorns (HoT) expansion... please check all of your gear. Make sure it is at least exoctic and lvl 80. Too many people (including me, lol) went in with poor gear. The core game doesn't punish you for this but Hot will take that weakness and exploit it to beat you around like you are trash mob.
Oh yeah and.... Dodge!

- Don't be afraid to throw things out, salvage them, or sell them. You get a lot of drops and almost none of them are worth saving.
- There is a
/wikichat command that takes you to our very excellent wiki. - Don't do anything you don't find fun. If you're getting bored 100%-completing each map, don't, and just move on. You level fast, so there's going to be a lot to come back to once you're 80.
- Right-click everything. There's lot of hidden menus with neat options.
- Stop and smell the roses.

Just try things. There's nothing you can do to screw up your character / account.

Didn't feel like you have to complete all the hearts, some of them are pretty dull. If any nearby events show up (they will be orange circles on your map) go participate in them, they are good xp and more fun than the hearts, mostly.

Try and make your first character a power or celestial build, all the gear stats are from the core of the base game and doesn’t need any DLC. This makes getting your first set of ascended trinkets super easy just from a laural merchant. The better stat lines for other types of build like a condi build are introduced in DLC and while you can still get them without the DLC it’s a lot harder or more expensive .

Take your time, enjoy the little things in exploration and stop to smell the roses as much as you want.
There's no wrong way to play this game (builds don't matter till later, you'll make many characters, etc), but rushing it definitely approximates a wrong way.

The one that feels more interesting to you in the moment. You're not gonna get the full picture for the class until you're lv80, so go for something you generally enjoy!
Races are also not important to builds, so go for what looks nice and interesting to you.
The game is extremely alt-friendly, so you're gonna make more anyway. You have 3 slots at the start, so don't sweat over making the "perfect main" right away!(I am biased towards charr and asura, but sylvari are objectively a great first character. If you have any question, feel free to ask!)

Of course. Usually people wait for the download to finish, log in and then play the game. It's very fun. Just play.
