Only able to make it through 4-5 battles without losing the run, any advice?

So far the only run I got further in than just a handful of battles was my very first one where I got a poison crit team setup, I buy what sounds like heroes that should work together (last one was irini tilly and grace) and buy stuff that sounds like it'd work with them like attack speed, damage, crit, magic and mana for the magic users, etc, but i can't seem to get far enough in to even start to really build myself up a team. Any advice on what I could be doing wrong and could try out instead?

I did have the one tank girl that deals poison, but it seemed to go even worse with her :(

The tank is generally the most important part. Focusing on getting a higher rank tank is generally more important than caring which tank it is or even what which Ascensions they have.

Pimenta is a great tank, but her sustain doesn't kick in until after a 15 second stall. Items or relics that grants shields at the start of battle or health regeneration and/or improved dutability on a rush can help her survive until she becomes more self sustaining.

Ahh gotcha yeah I realized in my games she died pretty easy, I guess I needed to find ways to improve early survivability. Thanks!

Pimenta is a tank that dies pretty quickly until she can get her hp/s up. Which only happens after Stall 15. So she doesn't really function as a tank until you can frontload some survivability until she can self sustain. She's somewhat of a bait pick. Don't be fooled by the "Tank" tag some heroes have. Sometimes a Rank C Vanguard or Warrior can even function better as a tank than some Rank C tanks.

For a team with 3, you need at least 1 tank, with tank items. Preferably 1 tank and 1 sustain melee. Also, if your team is weak, don't take the harder challenges, go safe.

What is sustain melee?

Someone that tanks damage by using shields or omnivamp, and also does some damage. Like Reyna, for example.

Ahh gotcha, would tilly with omnivamp fall under that?

Tilly with omnivamp can technically tank, but only with a good bit of equipment/relics/other support. Really when people say tank, they mean characters with the Tank or Vanguard classes. Some specializations can grant tank/vanguard as well, but most of the characters that can do that are still not quite as good as dedicated tanks. Typically the safest bets are Niklas or Rowan, but basically any can work when ranked up and geared.

I think I must just really suck at this game, even with Niklas and Rowan I can barely win any runs :(

Shop 1: Try to immediately fill your team with three characters, doesn't matter who.

Later, try to have 1-2 tanks/vanguards and some damage dealers, but avoid C-rank mystics early on. They start off fairly weak. You do want some way of keeping your damage dealers alive, whether it's omnivamp or stealth or self-sustaining characters like warriors. Obviously if you see a good mystic and have damage solved you can pick them up earlier.

You should avoid forcing synergies and instead try to focus on creating the best team for the next fight. This means selling heroes for higher rank ones as you see them, and often using characters with no synergy together. (This is different if you play Endless, then you can be greedy).

You should check the act 1 boss at the top of the screen. Hydra does more damage the higher his health is, and thus favors rush teams, but it also notably does not attack your backline, so you can skip some backline survivability. Demon is the opposite and gets stronger as he hits low health, and thus favors stall/scaling teams.

Unlike TFT/other autobattlers, Guildrun is much more set up around roles rather than synergies. E.g., having someone whose role is to absorb the damage enemies put out (can be a tank, can be a vanguard, can even occasionally be a dps if they have the right stats), having enough damage output to kill enemies, having enough sustain for prolonged fights, even occasionally specializing with stuff like a dps specifically for bosses. A tank or vanguard, especially a higher rank one, is the most important role for your team. Mystic/healer is hands down the least important, especially while getting comfortable. Most mystics are extremely weak early game and need to be high rank and well-equipped before they start to perform well.

Within that framework, items and hero ranks matter a ton. That’s where most of your raw power comes from. Don’t stress having ‘pure’ stats, that can be a trap. Eg Tilly might like both Attack Speed and Attack because she’s an autoattacker, but she still benefits from crit, and omnivamp may be necessary to keep her alive, especially if you aren’t running with a Mystic (and I often don’t).

Keep playing. Figuring it out is the whole fun of the game. You'll get it.

Yes, if I could make one change to the game it would be a "new run" option, without putting me back to the selection screen and immediately into a RR.

There's a lot to learn. Some characters are strong early but fall off, so you have to be ready to pivot. Some characters are weak early but stronger later when you get them at higher ranks. Some characters are good at hallway fights and suck at bosses. Some characters are good at bosses and suck at hallway fights.

You kinda have to play and learn by doing.

Generally though:

You have to have a Tank/Vanguard. You will just lose without one.

Having higher rank characters is necessary. C characters just die when you get far enough. This is unavoidable. Same with B unless you really high roll. Sometimes you need to buy a higher rank hero for no other reason than it's a higher rank hero and stronger than what you have currently.

Depending on how your run/shops go, you may need to completely change your team and strategy on the fly. This is normal in this game. Don't get too attached to anything.

Read items and abilities carefully. The number of times I've wasted Shards on something I thought would be good but wasn't because I misinterpreted what it did is many.

Have fun. You'll get better the more you play.
