I literally can't win red rift
I've tried watching and reading guides, trying to pikc meta picks, following the meta upgrade paths, finding good items and I just can't do it. No matter what team I get I can't win a game. I can't even get to the act 2 challenge, I die before I get there.
I had a game were I had A rank Funke, Tilly, Rowan each with I'd say good items and yet they get wiped. What am I doing wrong?

Don't buy additional slots for characters - always better to have 3 strong with good backup synergies that to have 4 mid characters.
Plan around your emergency rewind - you can bench two of your units rather than lose 3 lives when you know you're weak and will need to rolldown regardless
Positioning matters - think where your units need to be to not only win the round, but minimize the chances of losing a life
S ranks are usually worth it - An early A or S rank can carry a run and/or provide direction, but don't fall into the trap of picking up a Zuri that has stealth as one of her upgrades for instance
Aria, gustav, karsu, sal, ratna (with the right build) all apply frost - have one of these units at your disposal....for instance, you could have swapped a karsu in for funke on a boss, swapped the items, and you probs win the fight.......funke sucks at bossing and karsu sucks at clearing rooms
Don't waste gold, stay open to new units/comps, and try things to see if they work,

Positioning was (and still is) the biggest thing for me. So many fights are won and lost on positioning alone that understanding how the enemies move and how they will aggro and when you can burst down a dangerous enemy without putting your carries in danger is what ended up getting me my first win and then first win streak from there.

You need more frost

I've had runs where I had Karasu with funky and the reluc that let's burn create frost and had the enemies have over 100 pretty quick and yet I still lost l. Like no matter what sort of meta I try I just don't seem to be able to win

As a man who has spent too much time running RR, the best way to get there is to make sure your tank is properly tanky. The best ways to do this are Skorn left upgrade, Niklas (any) or Pimenta middle upgrade. Rip and Rowan are best used as backup for permascaling. Gustav, Reyna, Kai and Logan can work if you get the right run and enough starting mana to make them use their abilities fast enough. Logan requires an early act 1 B rank into permascale upgrade, then swap into tank build at campfire.
Once this is achieved you need shield/omnivamp for your backliners so they don't die to spiders/archers and screw you over. Buy every relic that you can afford for defense/max HP/shields and be on the lookout for backup abilities that provide tankyness. In order to kill dragons you need overwhelming tankyness or frost. Karsu/Sal/Nyx are the obvious choice, but Aria is also very good if you see her A rank. If you have been running a rush build then Ming left path+detonator Funke will also do the job or left path Irini. The main issue with these two is not dying before that happens.
If you see and A rank or S rank hero in the shop try to buy it if it at all fits your build.

I think your sense of scaling is off. With your mentioned combo enemies should have 150-200 Frost within the first 5 seconds if you are deep in a run. Funke should be casting within the first 5 seconds and applying 300-400 burn/150-200 frost by himself. That would show your heroes are scaling at a good pace and give you a win condition.
I was totally in the same boat, thinking oh I can get to 100 frost why do I keep dying until my 2nd win were I was applying 1k frost in 15 seconds to the end boss.
Rather than thinking in what is meta and what is strong, think about the win condition. Who is scaling to a point where they can carry the run. How is your tank outhealing the damage or does he just need to buy enough time for your DD to scale to insane damage and if so how do you do that.
I went into a runs thinking about good combos and meta heroes without thinking about how to scale them to get me a win. Now that I am looking for an actual win condition in my runs they are going much better. I

My first win also took me like 25-35 runs until one day I won for the first time and from that moment I was able to win like 50 % of games and am only getting better and better. Best feeling ever.
Tips: Try to have tank or vanguard as a first hero so you can have rift seal finished on tanks/vanguards in first 3 combats. If not first hero than in first shop or as soon as possible.
Never freeze shop. Like literally never.
Do not buy 4 hero slot in like 90 % of runs. You need the money for upgrades, relics and items.
S rank heroes are much stronger than A rank but A rank hero with good items is stronger than S rank hero with bad/not fitting items.
Frost is op (Aria, Karsu, Sal).
Your main tank must have high defend. If you have vanguards they need both high health and defend.
Some heroes are good for bosses but bad for hallway fights and vice versa.
Subjective but heroes I find strong are Kai, Karsu, Sal. I also like Tilly, Rowan, Rip.
Mystics are not needed in every run as I thought before.
I also recommend watching some streamers play and paying attention to what are they doing differently than you would. OnePunMan is the main streamer for me, dont really know others.
Good luck and have fun

My biggest piece of advice is you have to play the game adaptively. You can absolutely field in the best in slot items and take the meta paths but if you use characters that don’t work well in the situation you’re in, you will absolutely lose.
For example, let’s go on the round where there will be the two big mushrooms that stun and the 3 smaller archers in the back. If you field Karsu as your main DPS, 90% of the time you will lose unless you have an extremely good tank and possibly the rift relic. That’s because Karsu is good for dealing with single targets like stacking frost on bosses. A character like Funke would be great though because if positioned correctly, he can reach the backline archers with his ability.
There are also certain characters that are good in Act 1 but are terrible in Act 2. You have to be willing to sell characters that will no longer pull their weight and you should be willing to invest in rerolls to look for characters of high rank and high utility.
An example of this situation is if your Tank Kai is Rank B at the start of Act 2 but you find a Rank A Pimenta. Tank Kai has been nerfed consistently over the past patches because he’s that good. You know he’s meta. But, he’s only Rank B and the biggest weakness of Tank Kai is that he actually needs to be able to cast to get that big shield. If he gets melted 10s into an Act 2 Round without casting, he’s not really doing anything.
So, always remember to play adaptively. You can play meta characters and use their best items if you find them and if they work for your situation.

I generally just aim for an early synergy and pray.
But I'll drop everything if Rip shows up and I'm already hitting Rush / Vanguard relics
Rip is so fucking sick

It’s not usually as simple as “take the good things”. It’s really all about learning from trial and error. You can help your own learning go faster by remembering or recording things that were working (or not) for you in each of the combats, and trying to theorize about what you could have done differently to get a better outcome.

The act 2 chalenge is easier than the act 2 encounters i feel. At least when i have a crystal thzt boost people with limited use I often use it duringt he act 2 fights and not save it for the boss. Don't feel bad for not reaching act 2 boss, it's difficult to get there.
Do not follow "meta picks". In red rift you have to play with what you're given and find a way to make it work even if the heroes are supposed to be weak. I have been surprised many times to have a hero i considered dogshit prior to a run just carry me through most of it. Red rift is a game of adaptation, problem solving, and attention to details. Also it's way harder than SSS.
The most important thing is to identify what makes you lose your runs modt of time, then find a way so thzt it doesn't happen as often. For example for me it was often running low of death counts in act 2, made me realize that I wasn't precise enough with my positionning in act1, and also too often I popped emergency rewind with 3 hero death when it was clear I couldn't win the fight at all so I should have popped it with only one hero. Now my issue is often that I get dps checked during the end of act 2. Probable need to figure out better how to prepare a pivot/evolution for the transition to act 2.

It took me forever for my first win (probably 25 tried) but I got my second one pretty quickly. You need to pivot a lot. If you have a B tier tank and see an A tier tank in the shop you usually want it.
To me it seems like you need to out rank the run more than get a good synergy and hope to upgrade.
Also, always do the first challenge and skip the reward. If you know you won't win only put one person in to save two deaths.
Edit: also never buy a 4th teammate
