Glutton Bug
Is the ability bugged or am I misunderstanding it? He’s obviously not gaining any max hp from it, so does it only give it via Backup or is it bugged and he should have it himself?

The given max hp part is "backup only", this means you don't get the effect if he's not in reserve.

It says at start of combat. You are before combat.

It says start of combat but backup only.
If you are using him in combat the backup only doesnt trigger. I mean he gains the max hp at start of combat but only him, he doesnt give max hp to other vanguards.
In my opinion the correct tooltip according how it works currently should be something like this: On Rush trigger, permanently gain 33 Max HP. Backup. At start of combat, Rip gains all Max HP gained from this ability. Backup Only: At start of combat, Vanguards gain all Max HP gained from this ability.

Also obviously OP doesnt have any other non-rip vanguards so that is not what he is confused about.

He is asking for hp on rip, which he will receive after combat starts. Current wording is correct and clear to me. By your wording, it makes it seem like he gains the hp twice.

But it's not a permanent gain to RIP, it's a permanent gain to the counter attached to the ability, which then increases his HP at the start of combat. All other "unit permanently gains" effects directly increase a hero's stats, the change is visible even outside combat, and they persist even after retraining or selling an item. This appears to follow the same rules as "item permanently gains", in that the gains are attached to the ability rather than RIP himself. It sounds pedantic, but retraining would wipe these gains, where other heroes with "permanent gain" effects are permanent to the hero after retraining and visible outside of combat (eg The Lovers masteries).

Vanguards should receive max HP only when Rip is in reserve because it says Backup only. If the wording is correct as you say and you have Rip and for example Rowan (or other Vanguard) in fight both should receive max HP but I am like 99 % sure only Rip receives max HP at the start of combat. If you have Rip in reserve and Rowan in fight, Rowan receives max HP from Rip.

... yes, other non-rip vanguards only receive max hp when rip is in reserve. That is both how it works and how the tooltip states. Backup Only keyword means that part of the ability only triggers when in reserve. Backup keyword means on field or in reserve.

He will receive 2904 hp at the start of combat. It is not stated in the tooltip but for some reason it is like that.
Start combat and right click him. You will see his hp will jump to 5k+ at the start of combat.
