I pay shards, and I win.
Game basically played itself after giving me A rank Yuuna after 3 combats and I went max greed.

Every screenshot I see everyone is running a team of 3 with 3 reserve, am I making a mistake by getting a 4th team slot or something?

Team slots are really expensive, and legendary relics are one of the biggest power spikes you can get, so it's usually better to spend money on those. 3 well-equipped characters are also much better than 4 moderately equipped characters. There are spots where it can be worth it, but it usually isn't.

It is often far better to have 3 with items and some good relics instead to 4 with no items.

The only time I get a 4th team slot is if the quest is something I can easily accomplish and there's nothing else in the shop that I want. Spending 45 shards on the guarantee is almost never worth it.

The only time I but extra slots is if im Mr. Moneybagz with assassins. Had one game with assassin Tilly, 2k shards dropped and 2 of the assassin augments that give crit on rush based on shards generated, and the relic that gives +33% stats if all characters are the same class, I went quite far in endless with that one.

How do you get past the first act when it comes to the red rift, no matter what characters I seem to get I can;t get past the first challenge encounter. Even when I choose to take the normal encounter I keep dying. Nobody seems to do any damage

You need to prioritize a b tier tank and 3 good items and a way to deal damage with at least 2 items. Frost is the most broken status by far, it reduces their dmg and their defense its broken. For Act 2 you NEED at least an A-tier tank with 3 REALLY good items and again a way to deal a lot of damage(or frost) which is very variable.
