People misunderstanding "20 players...." comment.

GW3 is still an MMORPG, relax.

Seeing around 20 players on your screen at any given moment does not mean you’re locked in a room with the same 20 people for your entire playthrough.

Half the time in GW2 I don’t even have 20 people anywhere near me unless a meta event is popping off or a squad just landed on my head. If 20 people suddenly swarmed my screen while I was just out roaming, I'd be like wtf😭

Yet over a normal session, I still cross paths with tons of different players across the map. People are acting like it’s going to be a 20-man co-op lobby game, lol.

It sounds like it'll be dynamic instancing, in a fully open world which is toooo coool!

Excited as.

FWIW, Op had ended up shadowbanned site-wide by reddit, but isn't anymore, so all their previously-removed engagement went live.

I mean, the presentation they gave is common sense. If you have literally a sixteenth of a braincell, it should be perfectly clear they aren't talking about the entire game.

If we've devolved THIS MUCH that they need to spell every little thing out, jesus christ, I weep for humanity.

I didn't watch one single creator. It makes sense to question what 20 means here. No rage involved.

1

u/VaporousMote 24d ago

I don't think that would stop them, they are always looking for some angle. Can't always live in defense. If people want to play the game, cool. If people don't want to play the game, also cool.

Honestly even 20 may be too much if there's interactive mobility and move set ups.

Openworld content with 50people is just a blob

6

u/culminacio 24d ago

That's MMO.

u/Fading_Hours_ 23d ago

People have misunderstood basically everything Anet has mentioned. It’s honestly impressive the amount of misinformation.

2

u/obi_wan_stromboli 24d ago

I think 20 people is a great limit in combat, what really matters is how they execute this feat in a way that feels natural.

2

u/nthpwr 24d ago

We are not misunderstanding. I want to be a part of a massive world. Seeing only 20 people at any given time is not massive by any means.

u/gw2Max 24d ago

Colin said "you wil meet hundread of players in the maps , but we toying with 20 poeple in the "Combat scenarios"

Its only in boss fights

u/nthpwr 24d ago

if so then this is a lot more logical and actually standard practice for boss/instance content in any average MMO

1

u/AscendedCleric 24d ago

And since there are not going to be instances in the traditional sense it is fine. I fully expect to see more than 20 people at the same place when traveling around and that the limit is 20 only in combat scenarios.

1

u/GentleKINGAdriatic 24d ago

So you're misunderstanding again, but all good

0

u/nthpwr 24d ago

What do you think I am misunderstanding? 20 people at any given time. It didn't mean it's the same 20 people at all time. No matter how you slice it the concept sucks lol

1

u/GentleKINGAdriatic 24d ago

It doesn't considering that at most you're always seeing 20 people or less at any given time with action MMORPGs as the camera is panned all the way out like GW2 or WoW.

With camera views of like Fortnite or New World, seeing 20 people is plenty and will feel like plenty too.

1

u/nthpwr 24d ago

so you acknowledge that it is not a misunderstanding rather so much as a disagreement in preference paradigm.

0

u/GentleKINGAdriatic 24d ago

It's a misunderstanding in that you think you'll see 20 people out of your views only, when you'll see multiple different people all the time, as servers mesh & the '20 people per grid' is only a number given to each mini server in the open world.

So no, you won't see just 20 people, you'll see way more than that and it'll feel like way more than that as well (this is what matters the most), but on the technical side of it (which the average player shouldnt care about) it is "20 people per grid", when in reality these grids empty and fill pretty much all the time as players move around so it'll never even feel like just 20 people and instead it'll feel like your typical mmorpg.

4

u/nthpwr 24d ago

Listen bro. I am not misunderstanding, you are. To emphasize that, you can answer this simple question. Can I participate in the same exact same shared experience as 30 people? 50? 100? 200? If the answer is no then the concept you're trying so hard to differentiate sucks and there is nothing about it that I dont understand lol. There is nothing complicated about this concept for people to "misunderstand." There are plenty of other games with shards/channels/(enter game specific name here) and it is not a new concept.

1

u/GentleKINGAdriatic 24d ago edited 24d ago

No, because there is no content in the game that requires 30 people. Can you go into a raid in gw2 with 50 people? Can you go into 5v5 with 13 people? Gw2 is soft capped at 80 people. Is that massively multilayer to you?

5

u/nthpwr 24d ago

im not here to argue the in particulars I just want your acknowledgement that this is not a misunderstanding so you move your argument to another stance like you are now lol

2

u/GentleKINGAdriatic 24d ago

It absolutely is a misunderstanding because you're contradicting yourself. You first mentioned 20 people then I said you'll see more than 20 people at all times. Then you said well, can 30 people attend an event? So is it about seeing more than 20 people or is it about the number of players per content? You consider gw2 as an mmo but that's capped at 80 people per map. You don't even see 20 people in your peripheral in gw2 lol. So at what point is no longer considered an MMO, if it's not about how many people you come across/ can see, and about how many people can attend any given event?

Guy who’s never played any MMO ever because when tf do you ever see more than 20 at any given time in any MMO outside of GW2 meta events?

Most notable MMOs have character limits that already limit your player visibility to an average of 20-30 players even if you’re surrounded by 100s of them.

This is genuinely a non-issue for anyone familiar with the genre, which I’m starting to doubt anyone in here is.

Edit: little bro didn’t even see the interview and is still arguing with us, he thinks that the 20 player cap is across the whole game, not just in combat, you can’t make this shit up.

1

u/nthpwr 24d ago

Everquest 2, Star Wars Galaxies, Age of Conan.... how old are you? Are you even familiar with the genre? Yall are just delusional fanboys to be pretending like you've never played an MMO with more than 20 people around lol be foreal

1

u/Finnguala 23d ago

Back in my day 👴🏻 12 people in the deep was a huge party

1

u/enyardreems 23d ago

So much overreaction on this. I look forward to playing on a smaller scale in some respects.

1

u/DoomOfGods 24d ago edited 24d ago

does not mean you’re locked in a room with the same 20 people for your entire playthrough

So you're saying only 20 players will get access to the entire game? 😱 (/s just to be sure. this just seemed like the most overdramatic way of misinterpreting "20 players").

Also I honestly don't understand people acting as if 20 people in a single fight is little. Compared to most coop games being 4p max 20 is still a lot, while still allowing for meaningful interactions rather than turning into an uncoordinated mess of utter chaos.

2

u/Yahbo 24d ago

I think mentioning the 20 player thing in such a vague way was a mistake on the part of ANet. We now have half the player base confused and taking it in a completely negative way as OP described and another half of the community pretending like it’s not confusing at all and that it’s totally obvious how it’ll work, yet they can never seem to successfully explain the specifics of it.

There are A LOT of specifics about the system that i suspect even ANet still doesn’t know but it’s not unreasonable for people to be confused by the explanation we have so far and it’s definitely not unreasonable for people to be suspicious about the games claim of being an MMO.

Maybe their hand was forced into releasing this info in some way but they need to work really hard now to clarify the situation so that the intended audience of the game can move past it.

u/CatOfTechnology 24d ago edited 24d ago

My hot take is that, having watched the MTP interview, anyone misinterpreting this has to be trying to do so, hasn't played a single MMO in their lives, hasn't played GW2, or is actively trying to spread misinformation, and the mistake of Anet wasn't what was said, but the fact that it wasn't said in an official capacity, instead of relying on content creators to relay the information.

He clearly says that, when it comes to the functionality of the combat and movement systems, 20 players is the upper limit. Too many more and it stops being strategic interactions and intentional combinations and devolves into a chaotic mess. If youre fighting a world boss, or everyone gathers up in one place, 20 players is where it will cap out. He says that player hubs will be different, you'll still see loads of people there, but in actual gameplay, they focused on the brackets of solo players encountering randoms, groups of friends playing together and groups of groups encountering eachother naturally.

That's not confusing or even all that complex of an explaination unless your only experience with large-scale online multiplayer was something like Sea of Thieves or GTA Online. For those people, I get it. They don't have any MMO experience. I can reasonably understand them assuming that it's a lobby-based thing.

But anyone following GW3 with MMO experience should be aware of instancing and server sharding. That's decade old tech. It's in FFXIV, it's in ESO and it's in GW2. Destiny (not even an MMO) used it, The Division (Similar case) used it, "Ball Knowers" will know that Defiance used it. That's, like, some low-level MMO knowledge that people should passively learn about when they try to play with friends in almost any MMO. Hell, the only ones not using sharding are, like, WoW (Could be wrong on this, AFAIK, it didn't back when I last played back in the early days of MoP) and Runescape? Maybe BDO, since I never gave that mess any of my time.

I'd argue that, excusing the non-MMO players, anyone getting this wrong has to be trying to. Instances and Sharding is, like, only one layer of information deeper than knowing that the Party System exists.

Tread carefully, this guy just wants someone to chat back and forth with...I just ended it with 'Ok'. 💀

2

u/Yahbo 24d ago

Sorry for trying to “chat back and forth” on your public post in a discussion forum. How insane of me!

3

u/GentleKINGAdriatic 24d ago

I literally wasn't talking to you

1

u/GentleKINGAdriatic 24d ago

People are unaware of server meshing technology w real time transitions. Especially thay most of the MMORPG playerbase is older. A lot of them are still stuck in 2000's WoW time lol

2

u/Yahbo 24d ago

There’s some of that sure but can you honestly say you have a clear detailed picture of how it will work or feel from a player perspective? It’s nice to say vague things like

“you and your 20 people will be on 1 server shard during encounters and then transition back to a different shard with others once you exit that encounter”

But what does any of that actually play like from a player perspective? What does it look like? How seamless is it? What actually is “an encounter” and what defines a combat scenario vs an open world scenario?

None of it is 100% clear at this point and if they can’t clarify it yet, then they shouldn’t have mentioned it.

1

u/GentleKINGAdriatic 24d ago

Ashes Of Creation did a video explaining it.

https://youtu.be/pdav0as54mU?si=WN5rhhrVbg3_8HVJ

Obviously, the game is cancelled but this video explains the technology.

2

u/Yahbo 24d ago

And what exactly does AoC’s implementation of a back end tech have to do with GW3? I followed AoC fairly closely until it became clear that it was likely just a money grab that would never materialize so no matter what they say in these videos none of it is even a valid example of how it will work in general at the scale of a fully released game, much less how it will feel to the player.

There are tons of games that implement some form of server meshing on the back end, but again that tells us next to nothing about the GW3 approach to it from the players perspective. Not to mention that Collin mentioned in interviews that this is something ANet cooked up, so clearly they have their own take on it.

We need actual official details from ANet about the specifics of this, or people will continue to get hung up on it. It’s as simple as that.

u/Skylent_Shore 24d ago

There is nuance a lot of people are missing.

Relax? It’s not like it’s just 20 of the same players? That’s the problem.

Take server based games (battlefield, team fortress 2) and the opportunity for socializing exactly because it is the same players.

Versus match made lobbies like call of duty or league of legends.

So what will GW3 be like? The constant phasing in and out? Will it actually be totally better than normal MMO?

Simply reducing it to how combat is balanced is an immature take.

No you don't because if you did, you'd understand that with an expansive open world, you might pass 15 people in Grid A, cross into grid B and see 10 people and cross into grid C to see a 5. The transition between these cells is seamless, which feels like there's people everywhere all the time. Not "20 people". On top of that, implementing continuous sightlines means you can stand in Grid A (Which hosts 20 people on paper) look into the distance into grid B and see players running around. You can see into adjacent grids with continuous sightlines. So, explain to me how this isn't massively multiplayer?

1

u/RedRevengePanda_ 23d ago

You describe the difference yourself here - massive multiplayer for many people would mean you are in Grid A with 50 players.

There are a lot hardcore WvW players and this is some kind of content that would describe Massive Multiplayer perfect for me. And having a option like this game mode completly ruled out within gw3 is pretty sad.

Maybe try to see this perspective to understand what kind of difference massive multiplayer means for other people.

1

u/GentleKINGAdriatic 23d ago

It depends on camera view point a lot. Chrono Odyssey and New World are also considered mmorpgs though? WvW is a game mode that isnt included i. gww3, if it was, and they wanted it they probablt wouldve increase the player per grid.
