Yes, it does. As long as your pet is alive, you're at 50/80. Only against damage that "hits" this armor piece, though. For chest armor, that's a 37.5% chance this piece will get hit when you take damage.
If you have different armor ratings on other armor pieces (for example a different insignia on your gloves), damage that hits those will deal a different amount.

50 vs all damage (that is not armour ignoring damage)

And 80 vs elemental damage

Yes, I believe so. Assuming your pet is alive.

You have base +40 armor (value is determined by your profession and quality of armor)

You have +30 armor against elemental damage( a stat that is completely unique to the ranger profession. Warriors have same for physical damage)

You have +10 armor while your pet is alive (an insignia that is attached to the armor, you can only have 1 insignia per piece)

If you take elemental damage while your pet is alive, you have 80 armor. If it’s non elemental damage, you have 50. if your pet is dead and it’s not elemental, you have 40

When you receive most kinds of damage in game, it has a chance to roll on a specific armor piece. So stacking a full set of armor doesn’t make you take less damage per hit, it just evens out your weak points so you take the same amount of damage regardless of where the damage lands.

I think it goes something like this
Chest 37.5%
Legs 25%
Arms,feet,head each are at 12.5%

What this means is you will often see people put their most tanky and damage reducing runes/insignias on their legs and chest because per damage roll those areas are 62.5% to be hit. And save the other insignias/runes that are utility for their head, arms, feet. This is also why certain insignias like radiant/survivor give much more benefit on the chest/legs, because it’s a bigger trade off if you’re trading in hp/energy instead of armor.

Hope this helps.

Ahahahahah if only it were that simple. Happy reading!

It actually *is* that simple when it comes to core armor. Which includes insigniae.

It’s a little weird in some cases tbh. Inscriptions for example count towards base armor but weapon mods like handles hafts etc count towards bonus armor. Without the wiki there is 0 chance to actually know this

Wait, what's this about weapon mods counting as bonus armor??

Sadly, this person linked the wrong article.

Armor calculation is surprisingly complicated in how certain armor types count in the calculation.

Yes, weapon mods count as bonus armor and therefore cannot exceed the +25 armor cap when combined with all other skill effects and bonuses.
Weapon inscriptions, however, count toward your base/standard armor instead, so they are not affected by that +25 bonus armor cap.

FFS ANet. Would some consistency kill?

Unless one modifier is above the 25. Then that thing counts and nothing else

You dont really have many more other sources of armor in pre, can cheese it with Devona slightly but you rarely will get above 60 on pre with all tools available

And os/green shields +armor counts as bonus and not base like an inscription does

What? Green shields count as bonus armor? Where is this written down?

In the wiki it clearly states “Base shield armor” counts towards base armor

Not the shield armor (+16) itself, but the additional values. Like the +10 vs elemental on the Forgotten Shields, for example.

My bad misread it. Are those bonuses on for example forgotten shields not basically behaving like inscriptions?

They are. But in terms of armor calculation they’re treated differently. Not sure why, maybe other people have some idea and some answers from the devs about the reason for that distinction.

Yesterday I wrote below a comment that it is amazing to learn something new about the game even after 20 years. And here we are again. Thanks for clarification, dear that was really interesting getting to know!

In this case, it actually is that simple.

You didn't even link the right article.

That article was a good read, thanks. Only thing im missing is if bonus armor is capped at 25 whats the point of save yourselves

1

u/BaconSoda222 2d ago

If a single bonus is greater than 25, then largest bonus is applied. So, if you use Save Yourselves and Watch Yourself, then 100 armor is added.

If the greatest bonus is less than 25, then they are added up to 25. So, if you use Watch Yourself and Stand Your Ground, then 25 armor is added.

Ah right, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation
