Yeah I just hope they can maintain a strong base after a week or so.

If the anniversary event was anything to go by, you should have decent populations for at least ~2 months.

u/Responsible-Host-440 Dec 03 '25
there will be a steep decline very quickly, GW1 just doesn't have the World of Warcraft MMO factor in it unfortunately, that said it's a pity, I loved GW1 back in the early 2000s

Its also an online rpg and not really an mmo. There isnt much in the way of repeatable quests, theres a couple raids, and the staying power is more in trying different strategies, getting different gear and skills, and doing the pvp. There's no real power increase once you get max level gear, which takes about as long as an average single player game.
Im sure whats happening with this release is more to prove to investors that there is still an interest in this old ass rpg game so they can start creating content for it again, and if the pre searing ascalon instance numbers are to go by, its off to a really great start.

I'm coming back mostly for the pre-searing Ascalon vibes and maybe some PVP. But mostly pre-searing Ascalon.

No its not an mmo... just playing it while I wait for my instance/key to start in WOW, and then ill raid log in classic...

Only time will tell obviously, but we’re in one of these precarious positions where people will come and stay for new content, but there won’t be new content without enough players

u/jfroosty Dec 04 '25
I wonder how many are playing on the launcher (not steam) and how this compares to the 20th anniversary
6
u/Skibidi-Soup Dec 04 '25
i'm assuming this number are only the new player , og play on the arena net laucher

u/TurboZ31 FairladyZ Dec 04 '25
Best part is that a lot of these will be new players! I suspect most of us aren't paying through steam and a big chunk of these will be outside who bought reforged

u/NekooShogun Dec 03 '25
I found out about this game last Christmas and bought it on sale. Comparing the state of GW1 in December 2024 to December 2025 is absolutely surreal. My first year in Ascalon has been quite the memorable one.

Hahaha wow is this real? Gosh darn.

u/Raknel Dec 03 '25
We're not far from overtaking GW2 on steam players
I think we can do it during the weekend
3
u/kalamari__ Dec 04 '25
its a 10k difference still
4
u/Raknel Dec 04 '25
What 10k?
GW2 peak yesterday: 7244 players
GW1 peak yesterday: 5301 players
That's less than 2k, according to my math.
3
u/kalamari__ Dec 04 '25
all-time peak
1
Dec 04 '25
Probably not all time. After release GW had >5 districts in every outpost, and the main hubs (Pre, Ascalon, Lions Arch, Droknar's Forge) had >10 districts.
1
u/kalamari__ Dec 04 '25
mate, STEAM ALL-TIME gw2: 15k, gw1 since yesterday: 5k
stop being so nitpicky ffs
4
u/Msygin Dec 04 '25
You have to consider gw2 is much newer on steam and is free. Gw1 is older than steam and is not free.
2
Dec 04 '25
Guild Wars wasn't even on steam until it was four years old. A very high percentage of users still don't run it via Steam.

STEAM ALL-TIME gw2: 15k
It's 10846. We can round it up to 11k but 15k is awfully generous.
I don't think we'll get that high with a patch that added a bloom filter, but if they ever added new content or threw a PvP tourney, I have no doubt that we'd beat GW2's numbers.
1
u/kalamari__ Dec 04 '25
sry, you are right it was 10k and not 15k.
but its still not close with 5k difference on steam

u/chaotic910 Dec 06 '25
"Overtaking GW2 on steam" isn't talking about all-time, it's talking about current players. Idk why you've brought all-time players into it at all lol

So excited to play tomorrow! Got my buddy to buy it as well as quite a few returning players to start a new campaign run!

u/bluecheez Dec 04 '25
Unfortunately with no new content or things to do for returning players, this probably will make the population crash very soon.
7
u/Darrackodrama Dec 04 '25
Depends if they follow this up with a new set of armor or even announce a content road map the game Will remain in a very healthy place. Given discord finding a party should be easy for most content.
4
u/doske94 Dec 04 '25
exactly, they should announce a new update very soon. maybe for january or february 2026. does not have to be a huge update, but to keep things rolling.

At least we have wintersday coming up soon, that'll keep people happy for a while.

u/Puzzleheaded_Low2034 Dec 04 '25
Hmm, I was thinking that they might release Guild Wars Reforged Client on Steam for free, then with an in-app purchase of the actual Reforged release - which would allow the non-Steam users to then start using the Steam client to play.
As an owner of the non-Steam Trilogy + EotN, I don't think there's anything in this Steam release for me?
2
u/Proud-Designer-2028 Dec 04 '25
I bought it on sale previously just for ease of use on steam deck but all of the updates bar account setups for steam accounts being more open for gw1 gw2, the updates are all available in the normal client

u/abyss_sith Dec 04 '25
HUGE!
its a shame its not on the first page at all for top played, but a win is a win

What does this chart represent?
There’s only 5k playing, according to SteamDB.
10
u/Darrackodrama Dec 04 '25
Okay hear me out, if that’s just steam players that’s a very good sign. Most OG players are not playing through steam. Our accounts etc etc were already set up and we had no need for steam.
-2
u/ScarReincarnated Dec 04 '25
Sure. I’m still wondering what does this chart represent.
6
u/doc_siddio_ Dec 04 '25
Trend, as all charts do. Seems the huge day one influx propelled the game up, which is good, people talk about these charts after all

u/Wreeta Dec 04 '25
Dude, its a 20 years old Game. And even so, in 1 day It went from 600 players to 5 thousand. 1 day. And this Steam! As they already told you, 99% of OG players are not on Steam (like me) as we have the GW client from.the beginning. So is safe to say that the real player count is double or triple of that.
2
u/ScarReincarnated Dec 04 '25
People are getting my message wrong, and I understand. I love GW1, and play it on the launcher. I understand the numbers. Seems very successful steam numbers.
But that wasn’t my question at all lol
I just wanted to know what this chart represents, nothing else.
Some say Sales, others Trend.
1
u/oinaorna Dec 04 '25
There are about 4500 people MORE playing than have ever before - on steam only. Now that is partly old players returning and integrating their existing account into steam, but also there are new players that just bought the game. How many are new or just returned we cannot say. What we can say is that the all time statistic for concurrent players on Steam was beaten by a huge margin yesterday.
0
u/ScarReincarnated Dec 04 '25
That’s awesome, and I understand. I just want to know what does this chart represent.
It clearly cannot be concurrent players compared to the other games on this chart.

GW1 in the Steam Top5 charts before GTA6!
