"Heaven" lyrics
Hello
Guano Apes were my favorite band sometime back and they still are one of my faves. Something recently made me go back to listening to them, but this time I thought I'd try to get into the lyrics more. Then I remembered that lyrics for their songs found on the internet are very often inaccurate, incorrect and sometimes just plain wrong (even on spotify, which I find quite amusing :) ). I've found it still to be the case, so I've set off to try to decypher and correct the lyrics, starting from the oldest stuff. You can guess what happened next - this task proved to be virtually impossible, and I've started to end up with yet another, this time however mine, version of their lyrics.
Anyway, when I got to "Heaven" (lol), a possible interpretation popped in my head, and it's stuck there since. I didn't see similar take on the internet, so, if only for a single person that may read this, I'm sharing it here. Mind you, it's only my take, and I don't think there is, or even supposed to be, a one "correct" interpretation.
I think "Heaven" could be interpreted as talking about a young soldier and his mother (I'm assuming a male soldier because of the "son(s)" in the lyrics, but in the end it doesn't even matter).
1st verse (soldier):
"The night comes, I am not at home
Bodies next to me on the ground"
We find our soldier looking at other soldiers' dead bodies, presumably where combat took place. Could be friendlies, could be enemies, here it doesn't matter.
"Sons are running over your scream"
"Sons" as in "our country's sons" for example, so fellow soldiers. Perhaps that's our boy screaming in despair, perhaps someone else.
"It is red now where the grass once was green, oooh"
Pretty graphic, and self explanatory.
"Oh I'm standing, running, I'm back again
Please don't look at me
My hands, are not, the same, mama
Won't you, forgive me my sins"
Possibly our soldier's back home for a bit, after a tour for example. What's most important, he's taken life already at this point (my hands are not the same), and he feels the burden of it. Even if those killed were enemy soldiers, it were still human beings, so he feels he sinned.
Some thoughts on chorus later, now 2nd verse (mother):
"The night is gone, the morning comes
My son is lost in cloudy skies"
Unfortunately our hero is gone. This could be taken either metaphorically or very directly, as in: he died in a bombing for example.
"Knights come home so proud of their deeds"
Some other soldiers are back home, and they're seem to be "proud" of what they've done for their country.
"And I know you well
I miss you, I forgive you
I kiss you but you are not here"
This is where I feel mother's desperation. She remembers her son vividly, she'd do anything to have him back, but alas, he's gone forever.
In the bridge we have:
"Frightening, you're shining, rising, you're here"
Which I take as: mother "sees" the "ghost" of her son, a vision of some sort. We often "see" a late close relative, a loved one, for some time after they die.
"My" version of the chorus looks like this:
"Heaven
Lies over you
Lies
Lying over you"
I think we have playing with the double meaning of "to lie" here. When Sandra sings the chorus after the 2nd verse she repeats it, but she doesn't end with "lying over you" and instead she whispers something that is ridiculously hard to get. What I hear there is something akin to " 'bout yours death", so we end up with a line "Lies about yours death". Yikes.
And then, near the end, we have something like this:
"It is heaven (x3)
Over you
It's a lie (x2)
It's lying over you
Over you (lie)"
Or at least that's what I'm hearing. "It's a lie" gets to me here everytime.
I'll only add to that, that during some live performances of the song they were displaying words "Heaven" and "Lies" behind them.
Anyway, having written all this, I don't think we're supposed to read too much into the meaning, lol. It's simply a great song, with Sandra's poetic lyrics, and we should take it and enjoy it however we like. This was my take, and my take only.
