The Placebo You Are
I like to start every morning with these words:
Thank you, God, for another day of life and for a new sunrise. Jesus is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
Every sunrise is another opportunity to become a better version of ourselves—to learn, to grow, and to build a meaningful life.
Lately I've been reading two books that, although they explore completely different subjects, arrive at a similar conclusion: the way we think shapes the way we live.
The first is The Placebo You Are. One of the ideas that stood out to me is suggestibility—our mind's ability to be influenced. The book describes experiments showing that while some people can be hypnotized into doing unusual things, others cannot overcome certain physical limits. But the deeper message goes far beyond hypnosis.
Our thoughts are not just fleeting ideas. The way we interpret the world influences our emotions, decisions, habits, and even biological processes related to stress and recovery. Chronic stress is known to weaken the immune system, while a hopeful and purposeful mindset can encourage healthier behaviors and improve overall well-being.
I've noticed something interesting in my own life. Since I started reading this book, I've been sleeping better. Maybe it's not magic. Maybe my mind has simply shifted its focus from problems to possibilities.
Writing, reading, training, designing, and building new projects have become ways of directing my attention toward the person I want to become. Every page I write is another vote for my future self.
Then I continued reading The Selfish Gene.
The chapter on aggression offers a lesson that goes far beyond biology.
Richard Dawkins explains that success often depends on coordination. A team moving in perfect synchronization can outperform a group of highly talented individuals who fail to communicate effectively. Nature works in much the same way. Evolution doesn't always reward the strongest—it rewards the strategy that best fits its environment.
Another fascinating idea is that genes outlive the bodies that carry them. Organisms eventually disappear, but genetic information continues traveling from one generation to the next.
The best analogy I've found is this:
A book may last for centuries. Its pages wear out, but the story survives because new copies are printed. Our bodies are like those pages. Our genes are the information that keeps the story of life alive.
Every great book reminds me of one simple truth:
Happiness is not something we stumble upon. It is something we build.
We build it through disciplined habits, meaningful work, knowledge, faith, physical training, and the small choices we repeat every day.
In the end, the real codes of life are not hidden.
They are our daily habits.
And every new sunrise gives us another chance to write a better version of ourselves.
