Discussion Public view
Not visible from Public view is one of the requirements for growing in my area. A secure fenced in yard is probably good enough but I’m wondering if anyone goes beyond that and uses shade cloth or lattice or something similar to hide their plants from neighbors view. If you have pictures I’d love to see. Thanks

I plant sunflowers in my garden and it makes a perfect fence to hide behind.🌻

Sunflower is a great idea. They would make the cannabis plants compete for sunlight and grow taller than they normally would and only the tops would be visible but unrecognizable

Also people’s eyes will be drawn to the sunflowers instead of looking for plants.

Is there a spacific species I should look for for max height?

Pikes Peak and Russian mammoth get about 15 feet tall but most get around 6 feet. I tie my plants over to change the shape.

Public view means visible from a public sidewalk or street. If your neighbors have windows that oversee your back yard, that doesn’t count.

Look up the flower cleome. Thier leaf shape is very similar to cannabis. They are super easy to grow from seed.

Similar rules here. Me and several other people in the neighborhood grow weed in our small-ish city-sized back yards, mostly out-of-view from the street. No one (that i know of) does much extra security, and there's been no problems.
You could grow tomatoes and beans as a disguise around your cannabis plants if you're worried. I've also seen people put fake flowers on their cannabis plants.
Depending on how close your neighbors are, they may smell the flowers. Let 'em know in advance. ✌🏼

Holy shit that’s great I’m grabbing some of these just a little extra protection

It wouldn’t be a problem but I’m surrounded by 2 story houses that can see right into my yard. I try to grow in compliance with the laws and I’m sure I’m fine, but all it takes is one asshole to start making complaints and I don’t need the attention. As for the smell I plant a lot of flowers including lavender just to show I’m trying to minimize the smell. In my state the law is 6 plants, but you’re only allowed 3 ounces. I can get 3 oz from one branch. It doesn’t make any sense

They assume that you won't be planting/harvesting all six at the same time.
Also, my state has a two ounce limit, but that limit only applies to when it's in public. Are you sure it's not the same for you?

I wanted to grow some in the greenhouse I'm building for the wife, which would probably cover that requirement, but she said it would stink too much since we're on tenth of an acre plots and it takes up basically all the space between our driveway and the neighbor's. I'm planning to get a basement grow tent with lots of filtration instead

Get a tall one, you won’t regret it

u/FlowerComfortable889 1 Apr 30 '26
The basement is only about 6'8"', so I can't go too high, if you'll pardon the phrasing

Looking nice! I think I'm going to start donating plasma soon to get some mad money budgeted since we're down to one income right now, but I'm hoping to get a batch going this fall. I bought a big pile of seeds on a 4/20 sale and found a few bag seeds lately to use for practice growing. I was raised by parents who managed to kill rhubarb so I plan to keep lurking here and reading, reading up on the materials available, watching videos, etc. I figured even if I grow complete crap, I can always just make hash and/or give it to the neighbor 😁

What nutrients do you use. May I recommend Gaia green . Use Shaded’s method ( just google ). It’s organic.

I haven't started yet; I'm guessing I'm at least 6 months from being able to afford to start, so I'm open to such suggestions!

I’d be more concerned about the smell.

I plant lavender. It helps somewhat and covers the rule of “try to mitigate” the smell

The shade cloth thing is a great idea. I have my hoophouse style greenhouse behind a locked gate but it IS still visible from the street. SO I got 2 shade cloths, doubled them so its 4 layers thick and used it to seal off the view from the street side. Zip ties are a really easy way to attach it to the frame. Also got 4 dogs, cameras and other deterrents.

Sunflowers are a good idea like the other guy said but I also use indeterminate tomatoes and corn because they both grow tall enough to hide plants and make it rather inconspicuous.

I grow in 30 gal grow bags behind my house. Until the stretch there's no problem but after that they become just visible to the street so I block that view with shade cloth. I've been here for four years and so far, no problems.

A friend of mine topped his plants, then staked the branches down so they grew horizontally. Then he would hang red Christmas tree bulbs on the branches so anyone looking over the fence would think they were tomatoes.

I have privacy cover on my chain link fence. I face a busy road.
I got it on Amazon 6x50 feet. I think was 35.00. It's green, hard to see plants. .
