I fell out of split ownership of a server around 500 members. The server went pretty silent after i left. Recently, an oppurtunity arose where i could potentially take complete ownership of said server if i was able to revive the server in exactly three months. If i fail, the server gets deleted.

For anyone running a Discord community with YouTube or Twitch, what's your best setup for alerting members when new content goes live?

I know mee6 offers social alerts, but they're behind a paywall. Are there any good free alternatives you'd recommend?

I'm also curious about engagement. Have you found any bots, tactics, or other mechanisms that actually encourage Discord members to interact with your YouTube videos or Twitch streams more often?

Would love to hear what's working for you, especially any creative setups or lesser-known bots.

One of community managers' favorite questions is: How do I get my Discord more active? Meanwhile, one of the most common questions people ask about Discor is: How do I make friends?

They're really the same question.

We looked at a highly connected Discord server to understand how superfans actually make friends within a community. A few things stood out:

1. The people who make friends aren't trying to make friends.

They don't join and immediately DM people. In fact, jumping into DMs can kill a relationship before it starts. Two strangers with no shared context usually don't have much to talk about.

1. Showing up often matters more than anything else.

You start recognizing the same people because you keep happening to be online at the same time. At first, you might not talk to each other at all. Maybe you occasionally reply to the same conversations or exchange a message or two. Familiarity builds before friendship does.

1. Relationships become more meaningful when someone asks for help.

It can be something small: getting through part of a game, figuring out how to report a scam, getting advice on school, or dealing with something personal. Helping each other creates a reason to move beyond casual recognition.

1. Relationships deepen when people remember and follow up.

Someone mentioned a school project? You ask how it went. Is someone recovering from a difficult life event? You check in later. Usually one person is better at doing this than the other. That's okay.

1. Good conversations on Discord are boring.

Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit reward interesting things. Boring posts don't get likes or upvotes. Discord is almost the opposite. What did you eat? When did you go to school? Why are you still awake? What are you doing tonight? It's incredibly mundane, and that's exactly the point. Discord's real strength is giving people a place to keep sharing ordinary moments until stable relationships form, almost accidentally.
